Explore Fossils
Fossils are the remains of a plant or animal that died has been replaced with minerals. A fossil can be an animal or a plant, or even a footprint or leafprint made by something alive. You have probably seen fossil footprints in a cement sidewalk where a dog walked on it before it dried. Sometimes people do that, too. You might see shoeprints, or words somebody wrote. In this story, the girls make a magnifying glass with an old fruit box and a few drops of water. They are able to see details of what a Trilobite looked like when it was alive -- it was similar to a pillbug.

About the author

Lois Wickstrom lives in a world where imaginary playmates are real. She doesn’t remember being born, so she finds unbirthdays are more exciting than the official once-a-year date on the calendar. She’s taken so many science classes that she believes science is the solution to almost every problem, including the dilemmas in fairy tales.
She writes by herself. She writes with co-authors. She asks illustrators what they would like to draw. If she ever writes her autobiography, the title will be My Life as a Group Project.
Her mother used to get angry with her for daydreaming. Her little sister picked on her. So she lived in books and wrote her own stories in which the bad-guys made sense, and the good-guys had a chance. As she has grown older, her imagination has grown weirder. Even she doesn’t know what she will write next.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book (and the other two) are so adorable! Mermaids and Science for the WIN!!
Format: KindleThis book is adorable. And who doesn't love mermaids?! This book is about two friends playing by a lake (Fig and Maia). Maia can see the mermaid Trezzie, but Fig can't. It can make this a bit strange when playing. Fig and Maia are playing with stones when Maia spots Trezzie swimming towards them. Trezzie places a small stone next to Maia, but when she shows it to Fig she says it's to small for their tower. Maia thinks there is something about it because it came from Trezzie. When they look closer they can see that there is something on it, but they need a magnifying glass to see it better. Science to the rescue! Fig says she knows how to make one, and lists an item she needs. Fig doesn't see Trezzie go into the lake and bring back an item, but it shows up next to her feet!! Fig makes a magnifying glass with the container and they can see what is on the rock. Maia says to show Trezzie, but because Fig can't see her she lets Maia show her. It turns out that there is a fossil on the stone. Something similar to a Rolly-Polly. The bug that curls up with you touch it. The girls ask if there are more so they can each bring one home. Trezzie leaves and is gone a long time. Fig thinks she got lost and decides to head home. What happened to Trezzie? Does she come back? Do they get their fossils? Read the book to find out that and more!! This book was for my seven year old. She LOVES mermaids and this one is so cute! The story keeps her locked in until the end. And it's fun to test out some of the science from the books! There are more than one book, but they can be read as stand alone with no problems. I love the added science in the book. That's not something that is really taught at the younger ages so "sneaking" it in now can't hurt!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mermaid and the Water Magnifying Glass (Mermaid Science Series) by Lois Wickstrom
Format: KindleWhat do you get if you mix a modern day fresh-water mermaid with a Paleozoic Era salt-water trilobite?
A book in the Mermaid Science Series!
While trilobites occupied the entire range of depths for the marine paleoenvironment, their fossils can be found in many current biomes including Trezzie's river.
This book is a good introduction to the optics of slides of specimen boxes for readers from PreK through 2nd grade (give or take).
Additional learning opportunities to accompany the book are: safety around bodies of water - whether artificial or natural - as well as pollution, littering, and ecology.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2022Format: KindleMermaid and the Water Magnifying Glass, Mermaid Science, by Lois Wickstrom, is part of an interesting series of books that help the readers see that science is all around them, not just in a classroom. This is the 3rd book I've read in this series and I'm completely smitten. These books are not only a fun, fast read that can teach both children and adults about science, but they also have beautifully rendered illustrations, with fun colors and scenes.
Trezzie (the mermaid) collects trash people leave on the lake shore. With the help of her friends Maia and Fig they use a plastic fruit box to make a water magnifying glass so they can identify the rocks she found with unusual markings on them. It turns out that the rock is actually a fossil, which gives a great way to open a chat about what fossils are, where they come from, and even animal/ fossil classifications.
The author continues to write about easy science experiments/ projects that you can recreate and talk about while having a fun learning experience with children of multiple age levels. I think parents, teachers, and kids alike will love this book and learn from it. The last page goes into more scientific details about the science behind magnifying glasses, so even adults or older children can learn or refresh their knowledge. Do yourself a favor and get this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2022Format: KindleThe concept of this series of books is based around science and I think it’s wonderful how the author incorporated a fun story that teaches so many things in a fun and exciting way. The book introduces children to scientific concepts at an early age but in a fun, interesting, easy to understand way. In The Mermaid and The Water Magnifying Glass we are even introduced to a young girls imaginary friend and that shows children that it is okay if they have one as well. Her friend thinks it’s unfair that she can’t see her but accepts Maia and Trezzie no matter what. We are also introduced to another other important topics like trash being thrown into the ocean, littering, and how we can reuse and recycle which I feel is incredibly important to learn at a young age. This book was adorable, informative, and I would recommend this book to anyone who wants this type of book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2022Format: KindleThree friends enjoy another adventure with science. Another cute story which includes cute characters and science fun!
We are introduced to Fig and Maia in the opening scene and Fig is none too happy about Trezzie the invisible mermaid friend joining them. Only Maia can see the mermaid. However, by the end of the story Fig seems to accept that even though she can’t see the mermaid, she can still have fun and learn a thing or two.
This short story introduces the basic science method of a magnifying glass at a level for young children to enjoy and understand. My only concern with this story and the series so far is Fig’s attitude about not being able to see the mermaid. This might be the first story in the series as Fig was less “grumpy” in the Mermaid and the Rainbow story. Each story is able to be read as a standalone.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read.
Format: KindleVerified Purchase4 Stars
Mermaid and the Water Magnifying Glass is the third book in the Mermaid Science series by Lois Wickstrom. It is a bright, interesting, entertaining, and educational children’s story that takes them on a cute adventure while also teaching and inspiring them to learn about science.
We follow the cute characters, Maia, Fig, and Trezzie (whom we know from the previous books) on a new science adventure, where they make a magnifying glass out of a drop of water. We readers are shown the steps to the ‘science experiments’, which are simple to understand and duplicate easily at home.
The characters are cute, quirky, and endearing…. And along with the bright and colourful illustrations, they bring the whole story to life.
The use of fantasy teamed with science, engages both imagination and inspires learning.
Another cute addition to the series!
Happy reading!
