Madness in Manhattan Mine: A Novella of Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror (Whispers From the Abyss) Kindle Edition
There are a myriad of abandoned mines across the United States. Most are home now only to darkness, rubble, and worm-eaten beams.
When historian Maxwell Wolfe enters the abandoned mine below the forgotten town of Manhattan, he discovers a pit of human skulls and occult evil. With the town plunged into chaotic violence, Maxwell comes face to face with the imprisoned madman responsible for the century-old ritual and the unthinkable primordial evil he has reawakened.
Evoking Lovecraftian cosmic horror, Madness in Manhattan Mine is a chilling occult thriller plunging readers into the darkest depths of nightmare horror.
Praise for Madness in Manhattan Mine:
“A superb piece of cosmological horror!”—Samuel M. Hallam, author of Haunted Souls
“Durrant knows how to weave a creepy tale that keeps you on your toes and sends the shivers down your back.”—H. Everend, author of Cursed Legacy

Kyle J. Durrant was born in 1997 and raised in East Anglia, though has probably spent most of his life exploring fantasy universes and macabre realities. He fell in love with writing at the age of ten and hasn't stopped since.
When not writing, he tends to sit in varying stages of existential dread, or delves into video games, books and movies relating to whatever obsessive phase he is in at the time.
Kyle has written copious amounts of notes for his fictional worlds, which drastically outnumber his completed stories.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2024Some very nice scenes -a mine is a good inspiration- and good main protagonist.
Wish it had dug more deeply into its tagline of “Lovecraftian cosmic horror“
But, still well worth reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2022Kyle J. Durrant was awesome enough to send me a copy of his fantastic cosmic horror adventure novella, Madness in Manhattan Mine, for review. I also had the pleasure to beta read this wonderful beast.
The story follows Max Wolfe, who's studies on the mining industry, lead him to a forgotten, shutdown mine in the dying mining town of Manhattan, Nevada.
A place where residents slowly drift to becoming one with the dirt, living a miserable existence in a slowly decaying town, refusing - or perhaps unable - to leave.
While Max investigates, he begins to uncover a dark secret that will ultimately release madness from the depths of Manhattan Mine, and unleash brutal death to the forgotten town.
Dive deep into this cosmic horror adventure from Kyle J. Durrant, and immerse yourself in an eldritch mystery full of buried secrets and frightful revelations.
I totally loved the story and how it evolved from start to finale; and hotdamn the finale was fantastic.
There is a perfect balance of dread between the two halves of the book and definaly lovely horror in and out of the mines as things escalate from page to page like riding a roller-coaster of fear leading to a devastating gorefest.
Durrant's writing style is fantastic and the way he slowly pulls you in the story, really beautiful until you realize that you cannot put the book down unless you read some more in order to get closer to the finale. I loved the Steven King's 'Desperation' vibes a lot.
Beautifully done cosmic horror with enough mystery and well penned characters to keep you hooked on this lovely story by an author that I will definitely keep my eyes on for future releases. His previous work on the short story collection 'Beyond Dimensional Veils' is phenomenal too. H.P Lovecraft would be proud.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2022A creepy tale that takes place in a forgotten town with an unsettling history? Sign me up! I didn't know what to expect when I started reading, but Durrant knows how to weave a creepy tale that keeps you on your toes and sends the shivers down your back. It's a shorter story, but I was engaged from beginning to the horrific end! I'd be down to checking out an abandoned mine...but not the one in Manhattan!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2022Super brief summary: Max heads to the isolated and forgotten mining town of Manhattan, Navada to discover why the mine has been left abandoned. He uncovers an unimaginable ancient evil.
I had no idea the gem I was stumbling upon when I requested to review this novella. Durrant has written an exceptional piece of cosmic horror that takes inspiration from Lovecraft's work, but is wholly original and not at all derivative. The plot has the perfect amount of suspense and mystery before a wonderfully gruesome payoff.
I was excited about Durrant's writing style from the first paragraph. It is quite literary with a variety of sentence structures and plenty of adjectives and adverbial phrases, but it doesn't come off as "flowery." Every word serves a purpose to transport us to the dusty, claustrophobic town of Manhattan. All showing, very little telling.
I highly recommend it to all horror fans, but especially those who like cosmic horror. (It also has some great Western vibes if you're into that!)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2022He had, my father told me, remained in what he called 'a cursed town of misfortune and misery that molders and crumbles around an old, abandoned mine.'"
"I rejoiced to know that I possessed a personal – if suppressed – connection to my newfound obsession."
Creepy vibes abound when Maxwell grows an obsession to figure out why people would choose to stay in a town with little to no financial means, after all, the mine has been shut off for years.
And why does no one want to answer his questions about the history? He'll just have to figure out for himself.
I enjoyed how the mine represented Pandora's box. Durrant does a good job of drawing you in and keeping you there, uncovering the mysteries and horrors, right alongside Maxwell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great
🌟🌟🌟🌟to Madness in Manhattan Mine by Kyle J. Durrant
An almost deserted desert town. A mine with a dark, tumultuous history. A conspiracy hidden from public eye. That’s what’s in store for readers in Madness in Manhattan Mine, Kyle J. Durrant’s latest release. I’ve read Kyle’s previous release which delves into Lovecraftian horror, expertly utilising the gothic horror language of Lovecraft and Poe to tell those tales. In this Kyle’s writing is contemporary as he unwinds the mysterious of the mine.
The closest comparison to this story is Stephen King’s Desperation for me, a story I love while being aware it has flaws. Those flaws causing the pace of the book to drag in certain sections. This is where Kyle’s story differs, instead of getting a lot of concepts about religious belief Kyle keeps the focus on the mystery lurking within the Manhattan Mine and the growing sense of dread that befalls the township of Manhattan. As such this is perfectly digestible in one or two readings.
