Manic Pixie Dream Boy (gay rockstar romance) (The Underdogs) Kindle Edition
--- Can you find the love of your life on a tour bus? ---
Dusk. Leader of The Underdogs. Destined for greatness. Lives in the now.
Abe. AKA Lolly. Iridescent. Unicorn.
All Dusk wants out of life is for his band to become world famous. He also wants to have a lot of fun along the way. And to get his rocks off. When he wants something, he goes for it, consequences be damned. So when he sees a gorgeous pink-haired guy who is the human equivalent of tattooed cotton candy, he can’t help but have a taste.
But it’s when Lolly ends up on their tour bus that Dusk knows their meeting was destiny. Abe is the kind of guy who goes with the flow. He was hitchhiking anyway, so why not spend the week with a hot piece of rocker beefcake, getting smothered by his sexy long hair? And why not play the part of the supportive cutie while he’s at it? It’s not like he’d be sticking around for long anyway.
All plans hit a wall when photos of Abe and Dusk emerge online, suddenly pushing the band into the spotlight. To take advantage of the sudden popularity, the band offers Abe money for staying. Which means money for being in a fake relationship with Dusk. Which isn’t even fake. Or is it?

"I loved it. Loved, loved, LOVED it! Manic Pixie Dream Boy is the first installment of the Underdogs series. It's light on the angst but has an edge too. It's sweet, funny, sexy and it reads easily, but the ending packed a punch and made me tear up. It also includes Abe, who turned out to be one of my favorite book characters ever!" - Ele, Gay Book Reviews

About the author

K.A. Merikan is a duo of queer writers who don’t believe in following the well-trodden path. In their books you can dip your toe into dangerous romance with mafiosi, outlaw bikers and bad boys, all from the safety of your sofa. They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and in fiction. Their stories don’t shy away from exploring the darker side of M/M romance, and feature a variety of anti-heroes, rebels, misfits, and underdogs who go against the grain.
Be prepared for shocking twists, dark humor, raw emotions, and sizzling hot scenes.
K.A. Merikan also writes steamy M/M romcoms as Devon Doe.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe rockstar romance had been written to death and I've read too many to count, yet KA Merikan manage to bring something totally different with their own unique flavor to the story. I know The Underdogs are still pretty green in the indie scene and I don't really care whether are they gonna make it to the red carpet or not. With their dilapidated tour bus, the gigs, the groupies and don't forget the fanart and fanfiction, I felt they are pretty much the rockstars in their own way.
Dusk is the lead singer of the band and he had such a carefree and fun personality. Definitely not one of those drug snorting, binge drinking, groupie banging and moaning 'woe is me' kind of musician. Although I'm sure he might be a total slut, but is just never broadcast here.
Lolly, as I preferred to call him, is a wanderlust. A free spirited unicorn that manage to capture Dusk's affection. They met at a gas station and hook up in less than a minute, one might wonder how much romance can come out of such an unromantic beginning. A lot, apparently.
I won't refer to Dusk's feeling as insta-love or insta-lust, maybe insta-smitten was more adept. With his long mane and rocker exterior, I never peck him for such an endearing character. He was so smitten and sugary sweet towards Lolly. He seems to treat Lolly like a rare unicorn he managed to possess and will do anything to cherish and protect him from the world. I'm swoon over by his devotion, despite Dusk brushing it off as them having 'fun'. When they were outed in the media, they even played up the whole Dully ship to win some LGBTQ fans.
Lolly was hard to peck in the beginning. I didn't really get to know him beside that he had pink hair, loves lollipop and might be a talented artist. His relationship with Dusk seems superficial on all the fun and sex. I want to know where did he came from and where he is going. Is no wonder the whole Dully thing blew up on my face. I should have seen it coming, but I didn't because everything just seems nice and dandy.
I always love the dramatic plot by KA Merikan with some slight exaggeration. Despite this being a contemporary romance, with neither ghost nor murderous villains in sight, they still provide the shock factor and dramatic moments. In return my heart felt as if it went through the grinder. When Dusk and Lolly fight. I cried. When Dusk is hurt and sad. I cried. When they make up. I cried. When I read the sappy epilogue. I cried. There was an embarrassing amount of tears that wet my pillow and for the love of me, I can't explain why I'm crying over a book that make me laughed and smiled as much.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs much as I love the darker side of the Merikans, it's awful nice when they're sweet.
Manic Pixie Dream Boy is a traditional boy meets boy, with some quintessential Merikan twists. I adore Lolly, who's spunky and punky and 100% his own person, and Dusk who's a bit of a horn dog. These two work their way through their first love affair, navigating the bumps along the way.
I read this one when it came out, but I really enjoyed Tyler Kent's performance in Not Like Other Boys, so I couldn't resist the re-do in audio. This is a story which leaves a smile on your face, and Tyler Kent's performance just enhances it all.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021Format: KindleI was not expecting such a fluff read from K.A. Merikan, as the other books I have read by them, are a lot darker. This was a pleasant experience. Instalust/Instalove for sure and I honestly like how they handled the inevitable breakup. I would have liked more of a reunion after the fact, but it was still wrapped up nicely. Lolly/Abe was such a great character. He really owned who he was and I loved how he shared his talents. Dusk is the lead singer for a rock band and he is immediately taken by Abe. He nicknames him Lolly because he was sucking on a sucker when he first met him. They have a quick and unforgettable tryst at a gas station which sparks the road trip romance to their different gigs and back home. Of course they get more notoriety and then Dusk is outted, which starts their public love affair, which does not go too well; however, it does make sense for them. They do end up making it work so that is great. Really this was pretty fluffy, and I really love all the side characters. I cannot wait to read about Dawn for sure and then see what Sid can get up to. Tyler Kent did this narration and he did a great job. Would definitely recommend this read to anyone looking for this type of book.
Audio ARC provided and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was amazing. I’m in love with this books and the beautiful characters created by the authors. It goes against everything I love in romance and yet it was fantastic. I really dislike instalove kind of stories, and this one is just that, but it worked so great for me. I couldn’t be happier with it. I was even trying to read it as slow as possible so it could last a little longer.
What I like about it was the sweet moments Dusk and Abe shared. I wouldn’t expect such adorable scenes coming from someone like Dusk but it was so beautiful. Abe was a lovely character, from the way he look to every part of his personality, everything was beautiful about him. I also enjoyed so much the dirty talk and all that flirty moments they had, it was so much fun. I didn’t liked Dusk as much as I did Abe, but he was a nice character too.
I also enjoyed the secondary characters, most of all Dawn that was a joy to read and I liked the protective way Dusk act towards him, although sometimes he was a little bit too excessive. The plot was nice, I liked how things worked out. It had some angst but nothing too overwhelming, overall it was a fantastic book. I loved it and I couldn’t recommend it enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst up, I love the book cover as well as the title. My eyes were instantly drawn to the cover, and then I couldn't help but laugh at the title. It stuck in my mind and the next thing I knew, I was one-clicking! I'm not usually one for rock star romance books, but I have to admit that I enjoyed this one. It was hot, fun and a great way to escape the world for a few hours. I hope the rest of the band are getting their own books, and that we get updates on Dusk and Abe. I would definitely recommend if you are a fan of m/m romance and like them steamy and low on heavy angst.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love K. A Merikan novels
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love K.A Merikan novels. Lolly/Abe is just adorable...and I'd want a piece of his cotton candy lol. Dusk is so sweet but at the beginning a little bit to focused on himself. I hope there are more novels of this band.?looks like there will be.
I love it when a story shows the couple having a connection so strong.
Another amazing book by fabulous authors!

4.0 out of 5 stars A super *sweet* n' sexy little rockstar romp....mild spoilers incl.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFans of the authors’ more lighthearted yarns will no doubt enjoy this one, as it’s fun, fast-paced and suitably filthy throughout, resulting in a heartwarming epilogue that depicts a plausible HFN for our long-haired wannabe rock/sex-god and frontman of The Underdogs, Dusk, and his almost yoai-inspired piece of guy candy, Lolly/Abe.
I tend to give both rock-star and instalove romances a wide berth tbh, as I just really dislike them, but hey, it’s K&A, and I’ll happily read anything they pen. However, the leads are so edgy and larger than life [Lolly, obviously so], paired with the instalust [which I’m a mahoosive fan of and can totally relate to] which crackles between them from the second they meet prompting them to engage in some frantic, no-frills bathroom sex ;P, which all helped counteract the almost too-sweet instalove element perfectly, giving the tale a balanced feel.
These guys are another great example of KAMs polar opposite pairings. On the surface Lolly’s a kaleidoscope of sugar and colour combined, with a strong case of raging wanderlust all stemming from a rootless childhood, but underneath there’s a desire for so much more, personally and professionally. Dusk on the other hand is a swarthy and imposing figure, who’s never given much thought to settling down with one person, until he meets Lolly, and knows almost instantly he’s the one. And whereas Lolly took some time for me to fully understand and completely warm to, I loved Dusk from the get-go, with his cut to the chase attitude and how strongly he verbalised his desire and love for [and jealousy over] Lolly. Naturally there’s the requisite failure to communicate which leads to momentary heartbreak, but the two come to their senses and reunite fairly quickly.
Of course my heart lies with the authors’ trademark darker stuff, but I also enjoy their lighter tales, and this was no different. Interested to see who the remainder of the series'll focus on...Sid and Stan's a given surely, and should make a great little enemies to lovers, but Dawn and Mage seem close too, huh?
