JUSTIN NEWLAND’s novels represent an innovative blend of genres from historical adventure to supernatural thriller and magical realism. His stories explore the themes of war and religion, and speculate on the human’s spiritual place in the universe.

Undeterred by the award of a Doctorate in Mathematics from Imperial College, London, he conceived his debut novel, The Genes of Isis (Matador, 2018), an epic fantasy set under Ancient Egyptian skies.

The historical thriller, The Old Dragon’s Head (Matador, 2018), is set in Ming Dynasty China in the shadows of the Great Wall.

The Coronation (Matador, 2019) was another historical adventure and speculates on the genesis of the most important event in the modern world – the Industrial Revolution.

The Abdication (Matador, 2021) is a mystery thriller in which a young woman confronts her faith in a higher purpose and what it means to abdicate that faith.

The Mark of the Salamander (Book Guild, 2023) is the first in a two-book series, The Island of Angels. Set in the Elizabethan era, it’s an epic tale of England’s coming of age.

His work in progress is the second in the series, The Midnight of Eights, the charting of the uncanny coincidences that led to the repulse of the Spanish Armada.

Author, speaker and broadcaster, Justin appears on LitFest panels, gives talks to historical associations and libraries and enjoys giving radio interviews and making podcasts.

Born three days before the end of 1953, he lives with his partner in plain sight of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England.

London 1575. Accused of a murder he did not commit, Nelan Michaels flees for his life. Trying to start over, he apprentices with a blacksmith and learns to work with fire. As time goes by, memories of his persecuted past begin to surface, and he finds himself in many adventures. Along the way, he discovers and hones rare and special powers.

Set in Elizabethan England, this powerful historical adventure will grab you and not let go. The supporting cast of characters is strong and includes Queen Elizabeth I’s favorite pirate, Francis Drake, and her Astrologer John Dee. The main character, Nelan, is easy to connect with. The author’s ability to combine fascinating history with the supernatural in a compelling way is proven once again. This book, the first of two in a series, is a personal, magical tour of the Elizabethan era. The action, characters, and history will keep the reader glued to the page. Highly recommend to all fans of historical fiction and the supernatural.

If you love adventure and historical fiction with a touch of spookiness, this book is for you. This book captures what living in the Elizabethan era was like. I like how it was about the time period without being about Queen Elizabeth (although I love reading about her). I liked the nod to the supernatural and the characters from history like Sir Francis Drake. The book is well written and is a page turner as you want to know Nelan’s fate. I am looking forward to boon 2 in the series!

"The Mark of the Salamander" is the first book in author Justin Newland’s duology, "The Island of Angels," and it is a wonderful, rousing, and magical adventure, set in the historic period of 1575-80, when Elizabeth I was queen and England is poised to expand into a mighty empire. With its engaging main character, vivid descriptions, and absorbing plot which deftly combines history with magic, the author has created a very special story and I was lost in its pages from start to finish.

Nelan Michaels is the hero of the story: a young Flemish boy who came to England with his father to escape religious persecution. A good boy, his bright future at university is derailed by the false accusation that he murdered a student at his school. Like a character out of a Dickens’ classic, Nelan faces obstacles at every turn and battered by fate, but he always succeeds in dragging himself back up to try and try again.

The author is a compelling storyteller, with a gift for marrying historical fact with fiction. His descriptions of life during this time are subtly full of fascinating details without ever feeling like I was reading a textbook; I was immediately immersed in Nelan’s life and surroundings. Nelan’s circumstances shift drastically during the story, from his middle-class beginnings to abject poverty, even imprisonment, and the author paints a complete picture of it all. Readers get a robust vision of life at all levels of society.

The story moves at a nimble pace throughout and I was so caught up in the story, I was compelled to read the entire book in one satisfying evening. Just when I thought things would settle down, and perhaps, I could take a break, some new situation would arise that I had to see resolved. Still, I think this might be a perfect read-aloud to share with family and younger readers, tantalizing all with cliffhanger stopping points.

I recommend THE MARK OF THE SALAMANDER to readers of historical fiction who would enjoy magical storyline.

I think if you enjoy historical fiction reads (like myself) you’ll enjoy reading this book. I was hooked from the beginning. The author wasted no time letting us know there was a problem when Nelan was accused of murder, he goes on the run, and I like we get to see Nelan start over with his life and this is when we start to see his relationship with fire. His past does catch up with him leading Nelan to have a new adventure while on the run again.
Now this is when the book did start to slow down for me, but I am glad I stuck with it because the story did pick up with more interesting adventures in his current one. I do wish the story had a little bit more “magic” to it, other reviews mention history + supernatural but I don’t believe there is enough to really mention supernatural. What little there is, however, is great. I enjoyed the overall plot of the story and like that the ending has readers wanting to know what happens next.
