About the author

Abby Swift is a writer, parent, and the author of "A Tween Girl's Guide to Puberty."
With a tween and a teen at home, Abby has witnessed first-hand the challenges and changes of puberty. This led to the realization that there was a gap: a need for simple guidebooks that speak directly to tweens, equipping them with comprehensive knowledge about the many changes they’re about to experience.
Passionate about providing clarity during this crucial phase, Abby’s goal is to empower and uplift readers, leaving them feeling inspired, reassured, and ready to take on the world. The writing combines practical advice with a relatable and reassuring tone, helping kids cope with challenges like evolving friendships, peer pressure, and adapting to new social environments.
Abby hopes these books act as a starting point for further meaningful conversations between tweens and their parents or guardians, helping to make the road to young adulthood a shared experience.
Aside from writing, Abby is an avid reader and running fanatic who loves spending time with family, friends, and the beloved family dog!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024This book is well written, well organized, full of great pictures, and with crisp examples featuring struggling kids. Though it is easy to read, targeted to young people, anyone experiencing anxiety about the past, present, or future could greatly benefit from the clear messages presented here. I particularly liked the sections dealing with the following topics: shooting an arrow mindfully; the rope snake; the brain carriage; troublesome radar; eating an orange; dancing memories; reining in wild horses; the “feelinglish” language of emotions; knowing the wave will dip; how RAIN is helpful; muting the inner critic with a cheerleader; using thought bubbles to let go; and developing mindfulness not as an occasional effort but as an ongoing skill. For anyone wanting a very clear framework for managing their chaotic emotions, this excellent book is a “must read.” Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024As a parent, I found this to be a helpful read to understand how to better explain mindfulness concepts to my daughter. I appreciated the book’s ability to provide deep dives on topics while also distilling key takeaways in an easy-to-understand way. I also loved the step-by-step walkthrough for regular mindfulness practice. This was simple enough that I believe I can repeat it not only for myself but for my daughter as well.
Another theme throughout the book centered around cultivating positive self-talk and disassociating from negative thoughts. These are topics that have been challenging even for me as an adult, so I love the idea of introducing these concepts early on so that children can get ahead of what can easily become a vicious cycle of negativity. I’m glad that this book exists, and I can see it as something I will continuously reference as my daughter grows.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024This book...we all need this book regardless of age. I purchased two copies of the book to review it before giving it to my friends daughter as a gift. I am in awe and I am thankful for the intention of the author who wrote the book. If this book were to be viewed as a necessary tool to life through adult, I believe we'd all be kinder and gentle to ourselves and each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024This book covers a wide range of topics geared towards helping kids with all the "big" emotions. A great read for parents as well as it helps us understand how to help our children in ways we may not have considered. She breaks things down in a way that's easy to understand yet doesn't address the young readers like they are toddlers. I believe her approach helps the young readers feel more independent and take charge.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2024This is a resource I would recommend to any kid ages 10-16 for its ability to shed light on mindfulness. If you are a parent or educator who has hoped for practical guidance for the kids in your life, this is it. They will explore how to focus on the here and now and discover how mindfulness can be a superpower. My favorite graphic walks you through how to stay mindful during an argument.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2024This book introduces concepts that help kids understand the idea of mindfulness and how practicing it can help them to be more in tune with their emotions. As the mom of a 13 year old who has a tendency to be highly emotional at times, this book helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fab idea for this age.group
This book is a great idea and even if kids/teens/tweens just take away a few ideas from it, it will be beneficial for them. Lots of value there and nicely presented. It's a little word-heavy for those that aren't big readers - but they can just flick to the bits that catch their interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Teachers and Students
For a variety of reasons, I will use this book to teach my elementary students. Firstly, it is written in a straight forward, easy-to-understand format. It provides a succinct history and context for the use of mindfulness. It is consistently thoughtful and positive in its message. It provides many relatable examples and scenarios where mindfulness can help. It offers both the theory and practical exercises that students can use in real life. Lastly, even though I knew quite a bit about mindfulness before reading it, I found it to be a great refresher that encouraged me to continue with the practice. I hope other teachers choose to use this book as well, because I think students will benefit greatly from it.
