Romantic suspense
Kennedy L Mitchell sure knows how to write a romantic suspense with perfectly flawed characters. From the start I was in love with our hero Hudson, who though his past made him unworthy. Then we have Calista who has the worst luck in being surrounded by the worst men. her daughter Sam was absolutely precious and every moment between Sam and Hudson made my heart explode from happiness. The romance is a slow burn since both our MCs have triggers and trauma but when they get their it's hot as hell that was a little bit kinky! Mine to Shelter was a great edition to the Protection eries but can be 100% read and enjoyed as a stand alone.

    The wonderful Kennedy L Mitchell excels at giving us wonderful romantic and suspenseful stories. She skillfully gives us characters with just the right amount of imperfections. Hudson and Calista's story captivated me from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat. The story gives NCIS and SVU vibes with a touch of drama, suspense and romance! The chemistry between our MMC and FMC is so explosive that it burns from the pages.

    Lets get to know MMC: Hudson Mott bears the weight of guilt and not being able to bring justice for the harmed women, yet he exhausts every effort, lead, resource to uncover the suspect's identity.

    First look at our FMC: Calista Hart faced hardships in her childhood and later as an adult believing she was to blame for everything— including the traumatic experience.

    Hudson is a former SEAL who’s now a detective in the s*x crimes unit and beats himself up daily for not being able to bring down the man who assaulted more than a handful of women, including his partner. A detective who’s determined to catch this guy 4 years later and has to do it all behind his bosses back!
    Calista is one of the victims from 4 years ago and she’s always been attracted and drawn to Hudson Mott. Until the day she gave up calling for updates on her case and decided she needed to move on in her life, not just for herself, but for her daughter.
    Then hot Detective Mott comes back in her life but he’s got terrible news….. Cal and her daughter are in danger because the man who attacked her is back, except this time he’s killing his former victims.

    I’ve read quite a few police related stories and they always portray the cop as being the best or the smartest at their craft and while the unsub might be smart enough to escape arrest for a bit, they are usually outsmarted by the cop. But this cop, especially a former SEAL, he needs more training. How did he not notice the same beat-up, used-to-be-gold vehicle parked around everywhere they went? And that they were followed…repeatedly? Any decent cop worth half their salt would have clocked those things immediately.
    Inefficient skills aside, this was a very sweet story of two broken souls that came together and mended each other just by being there for the other. Hudson being a rather large guy and not used to kids made his bond with Sam even sweeter! And the bathroom scene where he sent Sam out to her momma so she could witness the kids new skill “first” was so thoughtful and loving!

    This was a chilling romantic suspense. The chapters in the unsub’s pov were dark but added tension to the story. I like that, although it was dark and chilling, there were moments of light and humor as well. It was well written and the plot was very well thought out. It had the perfect blend of thriller and suspense and light romance.

    Calista had led a hard life. She had been abused by every male she’d ever encountered except one. And when Hudson comes charging back into her life, she learns her hopes that he’d be different were well founded.

    Hudson has his own demons and insecurities, but he puts them aside for Calista and her daughter Sam. He is determined to keep them safe, willing to give up his job, his career, and his life to protect them. He fell just as hard for Sam as he did for Calista. His interactions with Sam were some of the lighter moments in this book, from his thoughts about showing a four year old his badge to his reaction to her finally speaking, and then immediately repeating everything he said.

    I loved that both Calista and Hudson had demons and vulnerabilities. They understood each other in a way that made their bond even stronger. I loved that the protective gestures went both ways. Calista was a strong heroine who was ready to put her past behind her and believe she and Sam could have a good life with Hudson.

    The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the unsub to strike. I liked that this can be read as a standalone, but some past heroes make cameos.

    Another great addition to the series. I love how the characters are written, the hero Hudson is a great guy but also has his own issues, he's not perfect by any means but he is perfect for Calista. They share a turbulent past and met during an extremely hard point in Calista's life.
    They make each other stronger.
    Kennedy L Mitchell knows how to weave a story and pull you in so you are there alongside her characters, rooting for them and hoping like hell they make it through. They are tough and formidable but also vulnerable and damaged.
    I love the way she can make them so human and so relatable but also weave in the characters from previous books and ones for future books it just makes you crave the next one. I gave read all the previous books in this series more than once and will be very happy to read this one again and again as well.
