Misfit Maid Kindle Edition
Heiress Lady Mary Hope has one goal – a complacent husband who won’t interfere with her studies. To sponsor her debut she selects Laurence, Viscount Delagarde, who proves at first recalcitrant.
Wrenched from his customary lifestyle, Laurie plunges into squiring an unconventional, pert and infuriating female through the social shoals. Maidie’s forceful complaints of his interference go unheeded, for Laurie dare not risk his reputation to her odd behaviour.
When news of Maidie’s fortune leaks out, her peculiar methods for securing a spouse lead Laurie from one ghastly debacle to another.
Will Maidie achieve her tame marriage? Or could the sparks flying between the pair sparkle like starlight?
A traditional Regency romp.

About the author
![Elizabeth Bailey](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/S/amzn-author-media-prod/idjse4gl287je1ua9fmsu5rb2q._SY600_.jpg)
Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.
Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.
Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.
Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2022Exactly what I look for in a romance, sweet and fun. Not as good as Ms. Bailey’s later works, but still has a lovely style, both easy to read and romantic. Maidie, as one reviewer pointed out, does not act very intelligently, but she is supposed to be a teenager, an age at which hormones can swamp logic. I recommend it as a light and frothy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022Oh my! Wow what a romp. I was nearly despairing towards the end, even though I knew the love story would work out. Lady Mary Hope, Maidie, imposes upon Viscount Laurie Delagarde, a distant relation, to bring her out so she may escape the clutches of her uncle, the Earl of Shurland, his wife and his brother-in-law, who wishes to secure Maidie's considerable inheritance. Maidie is not a convential young lady- having been brought up mostly by an eccentric great uncle, whose passion was astronomy, and she followed his footsteps in that regard. Additionally, having been left so much to her own devices, she is outspoken and headstrong. Of course, all this greatly annoys the Viscount, he himself preferring to do as he pleases, without some stranger upsetting what he thought was a fine life. But his great-aunt Hester intervenes, and the stage is set. Over time, and despite them often at loggerheads, the affection between them grows, although both are somewhat blind and loath to admit their attraction. Much mischief and misunderstandings and drama ensues. Of course there is interference from the wicked Shurlands and certainly some danger and a damsel to be rescued. In the end they find their way to the truth of their hearts, and we have our HEA. Just a delight! I stayed up way too late as I had trouble putting it down. Elizabeth Bailey is a favorite of mine. The dialogue sparkles, and you feel you are right in the thick of it. Highly recommend! I was proved a complementary copy by the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2019Although this story is cute, it has an explicit almost love scene. They don't actually consummate but it was still too explicit for my tastes.
I believe this is one of the authors older books which I assume she was adding in explicit scenes for Harlequin readers as I'm finding a pattern in these older books.
I have to say the heroine constantly believing Adela and Eustace did drive me a bit crazy. For an intelligent women she should not have listened to their accusations when she knew it was to their benefit.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2022I think anyone who prefers a traditional Regency romance (like Georgette Heyer’s) will enjoy Misfit Maid by Elizabeth Bailey. I’m not going to rehash the plot except to say Maidie is a bluestocking and Viscount Delagarde is the unwilling sponsor to the London season. Make that “very unwilling”. If you hadn’t guessed, it’s also funny.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2022Maidie (Lady Mary) has been brought up to speak her mind. She doesn't know the art of dissimulation practised by the ton. When she applies to Lord Delgarde, a distant relative, to introduce her into society, he is shocked by her manners as much as by her flaming red hair. But he's forced into it, willy-nilly. Sparks fly, of course, but in the end they lead to love. The plot is not quite so well developed as Elizabeth Bailey's later books, but the language is perfect and the characters delicious. I received an ARC copy of this book, but this is my unbiased opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022I always enjoy books by this author and this is another enjoyable read. Character development and entrancing story. What more could you ask. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022I liked that the h had an unusual interest that showcased her intelligence and set her apart from the other run-of-the-mill debutantes. She was also funny sometimes, and quite determined to decide her future for herself. No waiting around for a knight in shining armor for this plucky girl. On the other hand, she was frustratingly immature and childish in her approach to getting the H's attention, just because she thought he didn't care for her. She also stubbornly ignored advice about her behavior, instead of listening to those who knew better about how to go about in the ton. Being an earl's daughter would only get her so far. Of course, after the truth about her inheritance came out, the fickle ton was more than willing to overlook anything she said and did. But the way she behaved started to give me a disgust of her, which the H also felt in the beginning. And why, oh, why she would listen to her cousin's evil wife amd her equally evil brother when she knew their intentions all along is beyond me! The H seemed like an intelligent man-around-the-town kind of guy. I honestly don't know what made him fall for the h, unless it was her unusual hobby. That really made her stand out from all the insipid debtantes vying for his attention. But to live with her immaturity and unpredictability all his life is a high price to pay for a little uniqueness. Anyway, it was a fun way to spend a few hours, but I will not be re-reading. There is a love scene that is a little hot and heavy, though the h stopped it before it could go too far. I received an ARC from the author; this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2022I enjoyed the banter between the two main characters. The heroine is an unusual lady for her day, as she is outspoken and interested in astronomy. The hero wants nothing to do with helping her find a husband but his great aunt enlists his help. There are villains who want her fortune and could care less about her. There are humorous moments as these two circle each other to find their HEA.
