Haunted: A Regency Historical Romance (The Duel) Kindle Edition
When George is tricked into seeking shelter at Hazel House, he is surprised to find it occupied only by a beautiful widow, her small son and two ancient servants. Shunned by the local community, they are intriguing and just a little strange. But then, so is George.
The pull of attraction between George and Francesca seems to stir up the ghost of her late husband, while ignorant moral outrage in the village grows dangerous. George must be up to both challenges.
But when tragedy strikes, can Francesca rediscover her strength in order to leave the past behind and grasp at new happiness?
This story was originally published as Once Upon a Haunted Romance in the 2023 Dragonblade Anthology Once Upon a Haunted Romance.

About the author

Mary Lancaster is a USA Today bestselling author of award winning historical romance, historical mysteries and other historical fiction. She lives in Scotland with her husband, one of three grown-up kids, and a small dog with a big personality.
Her first literary love was historical fiction, a genre which she relishes mixing up with romance and adventure in her own writing. Several of her novels feature actual historical characters as diverse as Hungarian revolutionaries, medieval English outlaws, and a family of eternally rebellious royal Scots. To say nothing of Vlad the Impaler.
Her most recent books are light fun Regency romances, with occasional forays into the Victorian era, and the world of historical mysteries.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2025I loved it, i do wish it had been longer but this is the kind of book you curl up with on a rainy day with.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2024This book, an offshoot to the Duel series, is one of the most warm and heartfelt stories I have ever read and my happiness for George feels very real even though he is but a character. For most readers they too will love him as he finds his happily ever after with Francesca in his life.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2024Mary Lancaster's sweet short ghost story Haunted is quite enjoyable. Featured is, not a scary ghost, but a benevolent one who watches over his son and wife. A shy, kindly gentleman comes into their world and changes it for the better. I could not get over the feeling that this was derived from another book that I have not read, and I would love to find and read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2024A lovely story. I never "saw" my husband after his death ,but I felt his loving presence for several years. That's one reason I loved this story, I have lived it. Well, not the part about the idiot No Goods! But I have felt my husband's loving care continuing in my life. Great story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024Sir George’s coach breaks down and he must walk in the rain to the nearest inn which, it turns out, is much too crowded. A pair of mischief makers direct him to what he thinks is a lodging house only to find a widow, her young son, a couple old servants, and a ghost. Sweetly haunted love story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2024A little like The Ghost and Mrs Muir. Except this story is much too short and very good ideas are not really fleshed out very well. It needs a great deal more tension and actual interaction between characters and more of an active storyline. It felt like I was reading the rough draft of an idea but not the actual book itself. I finished it wishing it were at least twice as long with more interaction between the two people who mysteriously ended up in love Without ever speaking more than 15 words to each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2024George is my favorite character of all her books. This short story is a wonderful way for him to have his HEA. I just loved it. It hit all the right notes and was enjoyable to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024I loved George's story! Thank you for the whipped cream and cherry on the top of a lovely series! It was perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars A too short, sweet story
But really enough known of the main characters to be able to imagine their futures together.
(Personally, just wish their engagement had not been publicly announced at that precise moment! Jarred.)

5.0 out of 5 stars What George did next
Although he was one of the secondary characters in the main quartet, I always had a soft spot for George, who was surviving his horrid early life unexpectedly well. This short novella shows him managing his life by himself, travelling the world and generally being confident and eventually finding a family who value him.
Worth buying, just for the up-beat element.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely
A lovely short story with a great ending. I would have liked it to have been a little longer as I was fully engaged with the characters.
