Will you be ready to embark on high-flying adventures around the world? And if you think you will be, just how worried should you be about these words from the handbook? “WARNING: Mossby’s products are only for people who have the skills, bravery, and all-around derring-do to handle magical objects. Editorial Reviews
Review
"What makes this book stand out is that not only is there the fun magical premise of how exactly to operate a magic carpet (with practical advice on bathroom issue and such), but the carpet flying is also a cool framework for expository nonfiction. There's fascinating information about flying, useful information about map reading, interesting tidbits about strange foods of the world and animals you might encounter, presented in a very kid-friendly way. (I learned a few things I didn't know, which is always nice for me)." -- Charlotte's Library
About the Author
Having grown up in rainy Seattle, ILONA BRAY knows the importance of entering a world of imagination through books. Her real-world adventures have taken her around the globe: studying philosophy at a small women's college in Pennsylvania, canning salmon in Alaska, representing immigrants and refugees in San Francisco (yes, she's a lawyer, too), and traveling to far-flung destinations like Turkey, Guatemala, China, and Lithuania. She now focuses on writing books for both adults and children―and, of course, on working her way up from the position of assistant magicalist at Mossby's Magical Objects Ltd.
ALEJANDRO LEE holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Art Center College of Design. He has over 8 years of experience in creating pre-production storyboards and concept art for Hollywood area clients. He was a nominee for the 2015 Russ Manning Award for new graphic novelists. Mossby's Magic Carpet Handbook is the first children's book he's illustrated.

About the author

Ilona Bray believes in magic, yet is hopelessly practical. She's the person you don't want sitting next to you in a fantasy movie, because she'll ask annoying questions like, "Wait, if they're flying that high in the air, wouldn't they black out from lack of oxygen?" Questions like this find their way into Ilona's books, most notably "Mossby's Magic Carpet Handbook," a guide for children of all ages.
Ilona has degrees in philosophy, law, and East Asian studies. She enjoys world travel but hates long plane rides.
She is currently working on a middle grade novel based on her mother's childhood in Lithuania, and is represented by literary agent Kristen Terrette of Martin Literary Management.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is a wonderful book, full of knowledge and wonder that should capture the imagination of young (and less young) readers. (Just don't tell them they're learning STEM subjects!) I've been buttonholing people I work with, some of whom teach STEM subjects to kids, and pushing this at them. I love that not only do we learn of larger matters of science and geography and other matters, but there are also very practical bits of advice, annotated by some casual reader (the penciled note that if you are going to barf from airsickness, best not to try keeping your mouth shut as it just comes out your nose is my favorite).
The only quibble I have is that the pages are not numbered, and trembly, ill-coordinated less-young fingers can find it difficult to ensure that one is turning over only one page at a time.
But, highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI received the book today, and spent a few hours reviewing the content. It was written by Ilona Bray who has done an OUTSTANDING job of covering ALL the topics she addressed. The illustrations are GREAT also. I mentor with youngsters and 'oldsters' about many, MANY Aviation topics; and will use the book to help explain lots of 'flying' concepts, with humor, easy to understand, and to use. I am an Aeronautical Engineer with about 60 years of flying experience(Pipercub, T-28, T-33, B-47s in the Air Force... F-86Hs in Mass. ANG, and Cessna 182 in the private sector). However, Amazon in shipping the book did not pack it well because one corner of the book was bent so the first 3 pages of the book do not open easily! REALLY too bad!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI bought a copy for some young friends and had a great time reading it thoroughly before gifting. Packed with panoramas seen from above, interactive experiments and quizzes, interesting facts about historical sites, foods, the science of flight, and cultures around the world - it makes me wish I really had my own flying carpet! If I ever do, there are tons of helpful tips about how to survive a crash or if you get lost somewhere - all the stuff that kids love. Kids get lost in this kind of minutiae and the mix of practical and dreamy information is an imagination builder - I love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2017Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is...amazing. It's an antidote for the type children's "fact book" that condescends with a lot of "did you know?" verbiage, combined with puzzles, interlocking stories, a lot of sneaky STEM-topics, an overview (pun intended) of looking at things from different perspectives (primarily aerial), all wrapped up into what's ostensibly a handbook for a magic carpet (not included). I honestly couldn't stop reading this once I opened it - I had to be careful not to spoil the pages for the intended 10-year-old recipient. It's as if somebody did a kid's version of "Dictionary of the Khazars", fixed the Scholastic Books-style science trivia books, and threw in a little Harry Potter-ish magical pretend for good measure. What a pleasant find!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2018Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy son LOVES graphic novels, adventure, and learning real facts. This book combines all three! Beautifully illustrated and written- I love watching my 11-year-old lost in a book- esp. in today's virtual world! So glad I got it for him! Makes a great gift for bright, curious kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2017Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseBoth my 5 and 8 year old love this book. Lots of great educational facts in a super fun format. Great illustrations and the kids seem to discover something new each time they look through the book. Totally different then anything else we have!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseMy son got this book at the library over the summer and he kept renewing it the whole summer, so we bought him his own copy. Great for young nerds everywhere.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhat a fun and clever look at owning a magic carpet! I also loved all the extras related to science and travel like G-force, recognizing archaeological sites from above, and poisonous plants to be careful of. A delightful ride!
