Murder at Elk Ridge: An Inspector Hilary Casgrain Murder Mystery (An Elk Ridge Murder Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,306 ratings

The Hangman's third victim twists in the wind outside Inspector Hilary Casgrain’s new home. It's not the ‘Welcome To Elk Ridge’ message she was expecting.

Hilary Casgrain just moved halfway across the country for a fresh start. She’s desperate to trade the shootings, corruption, and gangs of the city for small-town law enforcement. And she’s convinced that a steady diet of nothing more serious than drunken tourists and fender benders is just what she needs to get her life back on track.

But a serial killer spoils Hilary’s dreams of a low-key career change.

Her arrival in Elk Ridge goes further downhill when she meets the sergeant at her new posting. It’s her nemesis, George ‘Goat’ Rundle. Goat’s odd sense of humor grates on Hilary’s last nerve, but he’s deadly serious about protecting his team. Hilary fears she’s doomed to be the ultimate outsider. Even worse, the sight of Goat Rundle is a grim reminder of the worst moment of her life. And she still holds him responsible.

Hilary is also troubled by her newest officer. Riley Mills is young, smart, and eager. She's also a dead ringer for The Hangman's victims.

As if The Hangman isn't enough of a threat to the small community, vandals are escalating their racist attacks from night-time property damage to the assault of a young girl.

The animosity between Hilary and Goat simmers under the surface. It's an advantage The Hangman could exploit. Can Hilary steer the investigation back on track before Riley has to pay the price?

Hilary wanted calm and quiet but slowly feels her old anger rekindling. The Elk Ridge PD might never be the same.

I love writing every day and the result so far is four mystery series, and counting. I’ve been retired from teaching for a couple of years, and am totally immersed in my new career as a mystery writer. I hope you enjoy the results!

New in Spring 2023! The Elk Ridge Murder Mysteries follow Inspector Hilary Casgrain in a sensational new crime fiction series! It's a spinoff from my most popular books, the Port Alma Murder Mysteries.

The longer Poodle Versus… series is a reader favorite. Small-town action, zany characters, and a Nasty Small Poodle will capture your heart in these cozy mysteries.

The Murder In Season trilogy features injured detective constable Claire Beckett.

The Free Prequels to all my series are available on my website, AnneShillolo.com.

Hilary Casgrain just moved halfway across Canada for a fresh start. After a troubled career in the big city, small-town law enforcement seems just the ticket to rest and recoup. But she’s greeted by a hanging body near her new home, and the realization that one of her staff is her nemesis from a prior posting. And if that wasn’t bad enough, a possible serial killer makes her regret her move and possibly her career choice.

I liked everything about this book – the plotting, the pacing, the setting, the dialogue, and the relationships between the characters. Hillary Casgrain intrigues me. She was a high and fast climber once, her eye always on the ultimate prize of promotion above all else. An injury that left her with a scarred face and scarred heart changed all that and she’s looking for an opportunity to live life differently. Her desire to close the case successfully is now tempered by her care and concern for her staff.

The plot about tracking down a serial killer who likes to dress his victims in wedding gowns caught my eye, but the relationships between the characters, and going along for the ride as they solved the crime are what kept me there. I was sad when this absorbing, engaging read ended, but so glad there are more in the series to catch up with. I liked this enough that I immediately bought book two in the series and loved that as well. I highly recommend this author and this series.

I enjoyed following the clues in this mystery as Inspector Casgrain settles into Elk Ridge. Dramatic events, vivid imagery, and unexpected twists, along with personable characters, kept my attention. Will Inspector Casgrain feel at home in Elk Ridge, or will personal issues, along with murders and vandalism, have her packing her bags?

Arriving in Elk Ridge was not what Inspector Casgrain expected. As she was being shown her new home, she looked up and saw a woman hanging from a tree. In this small town there was a serial killer, racists, porch thief, and drugs.
Good storyline, character building, mystery, and no hesitation in trying to finish the book. Looking forward to reading book 2.

Hilary arrives in Elk Ridge as the new inspector. This introduction to the series gives background, introduces characters, and provides two interesting cases. Once the reader is finished, the desire to know what happens next is there.

Here's a murder mystery with great characters and dialogue.. The details of police work are fascinating, revealing the grinding work, the attention to detail, the sleepless nights and barely snatched meals ..

Twisty whodunnit with a logical ending ..

I have a new favourite author now :D

There were a lot of characters including the Police and suspects and it was somewhat difficult to keep track. Particularly when it started off with the police officers surnames, so I had no idea of their sex, then became first names. There were a few too many suspects and a convoluted storyline.

However, I will purchase the next book if it's AU$5.00 or less.
