MURDER UNDER THE SUN a BRAND NEW gripping crime mystery full of twists (DI Hillary Greene Book 22) Kindle Edition
ONE OF THE MOST READ AUTHORS OF THE DECADE.
A BRAND-NEW MYSTERY FROM BESTSELLING FAITH MARTIN. SET IN THE GORGEOUS OXFORDSHIRE COUNTRYSIDE.
Former Detective Hillary Greene and her cold case team are sweltering in their stuffy basement office on the hottest day of the year when they are handed an impossible case.
Fifteen years ago, Imelda Phelps was battered to death in the hallway of her home. The brutal crime shocked the residents of the pretty market town of Chipping Norton. The killer was never caught.
The motive for the murder remains a mystery. Could the happily married mother-of-two’s stunning good looks have played a part in her death?
Everyone will have to take a hard look in the mirror — and not everyone will like what they see. If Hillary is to crack the case, she must keep an open mind. But one thing is crystal-clear: this crime was personal. It’s up to Hillary and her team to work out which of Imelda’s family and friends is hiding a deadly secret.
A secret lover. A humiliated husband. A vengeful ex-business partner. A resentful daughter. The list of suspects grows . . .
Suddenly an unexpected lead throws the case wide open. And then a second body turns up.
This cold case is now red hot . . .
Perfect for fans of Betty Rowlands, Agatha Christie, L.J. Ross, P.F. Ford, J.R. Ellis, M.C. Beaton, or Clare Chase.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEven retirement can't stop DI Hillary Greene! Returning as a civilian contractor to assist the cold case team, she is assigned the long-ago murder of an aging model. Working diligently despite the record heatwave, Hillary uncovers a new lead ... and then finds the body of a new victim. This excellent police procedural mystery will satisfy readers and may leave them guessing. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed this latest in a very entertaining series. After all the English mysteries set in the rain and cold, it was refreshing to read this one set during a blistering heat wave. As always the characters ate interesting and I never tire of Hillary Green.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI spent part of the Covid Pandemic reading, what were then 16, Hillary Greene “Murder” mysteries. The plots are well crafted and the characters well developed. This latest book does not disappoint. It is light reading for these thoroughly unpleasant times, but delightfully engaging! Thank you, Faith Martin.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2025Format: KindleVerified Purchase“Murder Under the Sun” is the 22nd novel in the DI Hillary Greene detective series by Faith Martin, and it lives up to the standard set by its predecessors.
For the last several novels, Greene has been retired as a detective inspector for the Thames Valley Police, but she’s been working as a civilian employee at police headquarters looking into cold cases. She has two people on her team – Claire Wolley, herself a retired police officer, and Gareth Proctor, a former soldier disabled by an IED explosion while serving in the army.
It’s summer and unseasonably hot for England. Staying cool is something of a second job for just about everyone. And it’s in the heat that a new cold case is assigned to the team. Fifteen years earlier, a woman had been struck from behind in her home and killed. No weapon, other than the ubiquitous “blunt instrument,” had ever been identified. Her body had been found by a teenaged daughter coming home from school.
Hillary and her team painstakingly review the files, check with police officers involved in the original investigation, and interview family members and any potential witnesses. They’re dogged by an enterprising reporter, who’s determined to make his name in news. And the investigation proceeds slowly, as the team looks for anything missed in the original probe.
They may be facing one of Hillary’s vastly few failures, when another, and related, death occurs. And it’s Hillary Greene who will manage to run circles around the new investigating officer and ultimately the perpetrator.
In addition to the DI Hillary Greene novels, Martin (a pen name for Jacquie Walton) has also published the Ryder and Loveday novels as well as the Jenny Sterling mysteries. Under the name Joyce Cato, she has published several non-series detective stories. Both Cato and Martin are also pen names for Walton. (Walton has another pen name as well – Maxine Barry, under which she wrote 14 romance novels.) A native of Oxford, she lives in a village in Oxfordshire.
“Murder Under the Sun” is an excellent read. Martin leaves clues, but she also manages to stay ahead of the reader, making this story (like the others) hard to put down. And the novel contains just enough hints to suggest that a 23rd is more than possible.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read and thoroughly enjoyed every book in the DI Hillary Greene series. I was eagerly awaiting book 22, and it did not disappoint! Hillary and her team are presented with another cold case, the murder of a wealthy socialite and model that took place 15 years earlier. A very daunting case as are all cold cases, but this one especially so. Tracking down new leads and interviewing anyone with knowledge of something that took place so long ago is truly daunting. But although now a civilian consultant, Hillary hasn't lost a step or her years of DI skills and intuition. Add in a miserable heat wave that is trying everyone's patience and adding to frazzled nerves and it is a very hard go.
Extremely well written as are all the books by this very talented author, with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy. And I must note that Puff the Tragic Wagon is still fighting the good fight, although Hillary feels he's on his last legs. But a savvy mechanic gets him rolling again. Its these little comic and personal touches that make the story come alive and add realism to the story.
Following up on the tiniest clue and using her well honed skills and power of deduction, the case slowly starts to unfold. Add in another related murder and an arrogant DI warning Hillary to back off and you have a very entertaining and enjoyable read. Highly recommend. You won't be disappointed! 🎉🎉👏👏🌟🌟📚💞
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAll the Hillary Greene books are excellent. This was no exception. Faith Martin writes a first rate murder mystery without delving into darkness, and creepy story telling like so many mystery writers feel the need to do. I highly recommend the book and this whole series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is my first DI Hillary Greene book and I loved it. Very well written, and I liked the subplot of the model and wealthy family members. It’s a fast paced “whodunit” that I really enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMaybe because I’m reading this and we are in a week long heat warning 111 today and Hilary does go on and on about the heat and no ac this wasn’t my favorite of the series. There are moments that DI Hilary Greene is the star investigator but it dragged on and the ending was a bit abrupt. I highly recommend this series as well as the Vicar’s wife series Monica is much like Hilary an amazing investigator and her insight into people is spot on. I hope Faith Martin rights many more books I love her writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlthough this is book 22 of the DI Hilary Green series, it can be read as a standalone in its own right. If you want to know the characters more, then I suggest reading some of the previous books.
This is one of those books where you are captivated from beginning to end.
It is a well written gripping storyline and plot with revelations and many a twist and turn, leading to that end one. .You dont expect .
It does keep you guessing, all though way. through, and I have to admit, I hadn't a clue
Certain authors I have their books on pre-order, and this author is one of them.
This is a most thoroughly enjoyable book
My thanks to Joffe books for the advanced copy. This is my honest and unbiased review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grateful reader
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThankyou so much to Faith Martin for having this series on Kindle Unlimited.
I read a lot and use KU for my choice of books. I could not afford to read as much if paying for each book.
I have read the series and have enjoyed every one. I do read some others of Faith's for which I pay but naturally not as often or as many.
Faith Martin is one of my favourite authors and hope she keeps writing for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilary’s last case?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell constructed but somewhat slow mystery. Lots of red herrings to muddle the case, with a surprising solution. Unfortunately, the ending was not fully satisfying for ex-DI Greene.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another exciting and engaging book but not sure about the ending.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnother well-written book that you have to keep reading. However, unlike other books in this excellent series, I found the ending a bit unexpected and unsatisfying, which did spoil it a bit for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoying the series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot much happens in the personal lives of the characters. They remain frozen in time. Police procedural with lots of suspects which is well written. But enjoyed earlier books with more characters development more than this one. The heat wave is the main character in this book.
