A Game Changer

A Game Changer
I’ve read several self-help books in the past, but this one was a game changer. I really love Shyam’s own personal perspective about the battles that we face and his practical approach to navigating your career while dealing with all of the human emotions that come with working in a corporate setting. To be honest, there were several things I took from the book that I intend to apply to my life overall, not just my career, which speaks to the power contained in this book. I am looking forward to Shyam’s continued work in this field and am eager to learn more from him!

I’ve been running a few LLCs for years now, and through those experiences, I’ve learned a lot. The advice in this book is spot on. The chapter on learning from mistakes says to own your mistakes before they own you- that's some great advice put in a new sounding phrase. This book helped me recognize the things I’ve been avoiding, things that have been holding me back. I’ve taken actions based on the content and am working through a few issues. With the help of this book, I’m sure I’ll get through them. This is worth checking out.

The Lost Map To Your Career: A Practical Career Self Help Book for Navigating and Overcoming Self-Imposed Limits
By Shyam Uthaman is a must read for anyone who is an entrepreneur or working in the corporate lifecycle. I can truly relate to the topics and advice provided in this book and applaud the author for spelling things out for those of us who want to play the "game". However, for me, I didn't choose to play the "game" and for this reason, as mentioned in the book, some of the doors of opportunity for me were closed. For anyone who is running a business or in the corporate world as mentioned, this is a must have. The author shares practical strategies that I've used before the printing of this book that were successful. Like how to position yourself with the right people to build a network, how to be a servant leader, perform self-assessments, and identify people of influence. My favorite section of the book covers: how to find mentors, how to use "why" to drive purposeful work and clarity among your peers, and my personal favorite - "how to balance celebration with accountability"....

As a serial entrepreneur with many failures under my belt it was really easy to fall into a bad pattern of self doubt and fear. I really struggled in my business life but also in my regular 9 to 5. (Yes both!) This book has some really practical tips for pulling yourself out of despair and discouragement. I feel renewed and like I have what it takes, I just needed a shift in focus. Great read, good for any ambitious person that feels stuck in a career rut.

his is the kind of guide I wish I had early in my career. Fear and uncertainty kept me stuck in roles that did not reflect my potential and delayed my pursuit of business goals. The content in this book helps shift that mindset by offering grounded advice that is easy to apply. It speaks to new professionals and those already on their path who may be stuck or ready for a change. The guidance around navigating unhealthy work dynamics and making confident career moves was especially helpful. It reminded me that growth is possible at any stage with the right tools and clarity. The sections on communication and leadership provided insights that felt especially relevant and timely. This book serves as a steady reminder that you can reset your direction with purpose and practical steps.

There was a lot in this book that I already knew, but that only makes it better for those seeking guidance and knowledge on their career. However, a part of the book that I was deeply drawn to was in Chapter 15, and is about knowing when to walk away from a mentorship. Whether it's from a disconnect of what type of work you're doing, how well it aligns to your personal ideals, or even if you've potentially outgrown the relationship. This book seems to add a lot of value and a lot of talking points about going through a career. I can see myself recommending this book to friends in the future.

I heard about this book through a friend and decided to take it up expecting the usual motivational speeches. What I read completely blew me away. Ever get that feeling when someone tells you something and you realize what they are telling you is so right and so simple.. why didn’t I think of all this time? That is what you will feel all through this book. It makes you realize things that are right in front of you and you fail to notice due to your social conditioning. I started applying the action plans at the end of each chapter and I have already noticed major changes in the way I am perceived in my office. This book will be my gift to everyone going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klar, motivierend und mit vielen Aha-Momenten
Reviewed in Germany on April 4, 2025

I think this might be one of the best books I've read so far on career advice, interpersonal skills and how to handle office/organizational politics... In the beginning it felt a little like the project management course I had previously taken but with a lot more real-world insights along with interesting stories and scenarios. Later on, it covered basically everything you need to succeed in your professional life including conflict resolution and networking skills and so much more... I'm really glad I bought this book and will definitely be referring to it here and there to recap all the valuable insights and strategies. I love how it's written in a light-hearted, approachable way, even infused with a hint of humor from time to time. I'm glad at the end the author explained who Chad was lol...as I was wondering all along if this character was real or not. I guessed right haha! Excellent read! Highly recommend!
