Though I now live in Kelso in the Scottish Borders, I was born and brought up on Tyneside; the setting for my last four novels. Once a Geordie, always a Geordie, as the saying goes.

Though I only began writing in 2001, many of my short stories and articles have been published in national magazines here in the UK. But then I felt the urge to move on and write something with a little more grit.

My first novel, The Trojan Project, is an all-action thriller. During the writing process, I felt I was on the ride of my life, as I added so many spine-chilling incidents. I was determined to grab the readers' attention from the very beginning and give them the roller-coaster read of their lives.

Since then, I turned to writing women's fiction. Divorcees.Biz, a novel of fun and romance, shortly followed by, Only Twelve Days, a heart-warming romance.

However, after deciding to turn my hand to writing a series of cozy murder mysteries, I chose my hometown as the setting. Murder on Tyneside - Agnes Lockwood Mysteries Book 1, was released in December 2016, with Agnes as the new sleuth on Tyneside. Death on Tyneside (Book 2) came next followed by Vengeance on Tyneside (Book 3). A Mystery on Tyneside (Book 4) was published in October 2020.

Hopefully, there will be a Book 5 in the series. How could I possibly let Agnes Lockwood down, when she has given me so much fun - she is part of me now.

    A Mystery on Tyneside is the 4th book in a wonderful series written by Eileen Thornton. I read the first three and was pleasantly surprised when I saw a fourth was being released this fall. In this caper, Agnes finds a dead body in the first few pages--a man who's been shot in the ladies' room of a high-end restaurant. What a fun way to kick off the book... and easily draw readers in!

    To know Agnes is to love her. A widow in her fifties, she's nosy and direct. Alan, newly her boyfriend, runs a large part of the local police. He is adamant that she stays out of his cases, but she's insistent she stay involved in them. It makes for lots of fun banter. In this caper, they argue quite a bit, and it opens the door for Agnes to work with a new friend to help solve the case. As Alan and one of his detectives search for the killer, more crimes occur... so Agnes teams up to solve the case too. Who will get to the end first? Unfortunately, something awful happens along the way, and it made my heart race. Luckily, things come back together, but for a while, we had quite the suspenseful fear factor.

    Agnes can be a little difficult time. And when she pushes Alan's buttons, I want to pull her aside and say "Stop it now, love. You aren't perfect either!" But she amuses me, and I wish we could be friends in real life. Can you imagine the fun we'd have, solving a crime? The action mainly occurs in the hotel and a restaurant, and it's a fun place to explore. Between overheard conversations, elevator workers, restaurant hosts, and other suspects, the books keeps you guessing. When the dead men all have similar names, what's not to love?

    I enjoy these books. They're generally light, more focused on details and less on intense plots... there is a ton of helpful methodical analysis, including careful and deliberate word choices. Ultimately, I didn't guess this villain, and there was a twist. I recommend them for light mystery lovers and those with a zest for UK hospitality. So much to consider... now I hope to find out about a future book in the series too.

    This is part of a series so I don't feel like I know the main character from the start so it was hard to keep my interest, The murder happens very early in the book so the whys and wherefores are foremost from the beginning before I got to know the characters. I usually read small town cozy mysteries with amateur sleuths so a bit out of my genre too. The writing itself is concise and well done and the plot is easy to follow and intricate. I'm sure many people would enjoy this book.

    I have read all 4 books in this series, but won't read another. Poor editing and storyline. Alan Johnson/Johnston (story kept changing the name which was annoying) acted more like an adolescent than a DCI with his temper tantrums. In last chapter, an officer was called Moffat (one of the bad guys) instead of Morris. Overall disappointing and annoying read. I wouldn't have given it 1 star, but at least one was required.

    I believe this is the 4th book in this series but the first one I have read/listened to and although it makes reference to this not being the first case Agnes has been directly involved in I didn’t feel like I had to have read the other books for this to make sense, I probably will seek them out though as this was an enjoyable story with relatable characters.

    The narrator does a good job, she’s pleasant to listen to portrays the characters well.

    I enjoyed the first 3 books of series where the 2 leads worked together but still had toddler behavior spats. This book it is tIresome & they are working against each other.

    Big issue I have is the increased references to the TV show NCIS - a show I have never watched so I guess I am missing part of the plot & jokes.

    The editing is horrendous.

    I am tired of the 55 year old DCI having tantrums & the passive aggressive tendency of the 55 year old female. Grow up!

    Gave it 2 stars since the other 3 books in the series were ok. Will read no more.

The first two were good but weren’t written as well , but the 3 rd and 4 th were both well written with an exciting plot with twists and turns and good character development with lots of relatable banter !     Whilst waiting for her boyfriend DCI Alan Johnson to join her in her favourite restaurant for lunch, Agnes decides to freshen up her lipstick in the ladies’ room for the occasion, and is in for an unexpected shock. Not content with raising the alarm and leaving the investigation in the hands of her boyfriend, DCI Alan Johnson, Agnes teams up with her friend Sandra, the girlfriend of the DCI’s right-hand man, Sergeant Andrews, to help her solve the murder before the police do. The victim is quickly identified but when a second body is discovered bearing the same name, it leads to confusion and rivalry between Agnes and her boyfriend as to who will solve the case first, inevitably placing her life in danger. Revealing any more of the plot at this stage would spoil the reader’s enjoyment of this tightly paced thriller, brilliantly portrayed, with all its twists and turns, before the final showdown. It only remains for me to award a well-deserved five star rating.
