ONE PENNY A STORY, I called across the playground.

Entirely unusual, given how shy I was (and still am), for me to be shouting anything across a playground.

But there I was, a double-sided sheet of narrow ruled paper (I've always been kind of particular about the paper I like. Back then, narrow ruled. Now, grid.) in my hand, selling stories I hadn't yet wrote.

Every line featured a different title. I'd lay on my bed the night before thinking of them all, probably singing along to Boyzone songs as I did [hey, don't judge... I see you over there like you never thought you were destined to marry a boy band singer...].

My school friends could buy a Mona original for one penny. One penny!

They'd pick the title they liked, hand over their sweaty penny, and I'd write the story for them.

And I've never grown out of writing stories.

Now, I write cozy mystery stories from my den in the Peak District, and when I'm not writing them, I'm reading them.

    Fun cozy mysteries. The main characters are sisters; one is a medium and the other a ghost who is still around proving that sisterhood is forever, and just as complicated in the afterlife. As the story progresses, all the citizens of the town are given the ability to see spirits, which causes all sorts of havoc. Of course there are a current sheriff, a spirit sheriff and each sister is an amateur sleuth with typical cozy mystery complications (such as each interfering with their counterpart's business), but there is a new twist, with alternating chapters written from each sister's
    perspective. Because the sisters are imports from England, there's all the fun of dry British humor and trying to figure out if the author is also British. The love stories are just adult enough to retain one's interest, but never step over the line. Altogether a delightful romp through the paranormal.

    This box set is amazing! You get 4 great books in the set. Connie and Sage are sisters who live together, well sort of live together since Connie is alive and Sage is a spirit. Connie is a medium and helps people connect with their loved ones who have past on. Mystic Springs is a usually quiet town until there is a murder. The town hasn't replaced the Sheriff since he died in the line of duty. Connie ends up working with a team that includes the deceased Sheriff and the decease Mayor of Mystic Springs to solve the murder. In the course of their investigation they realize it would be much easier if more people could see the spirits. They ask Violet the local witch, who is possibly the strongest witch alive, to cast a spell that will allow all residents of Mystic Springs to see the spirits. This wonderful plot twist allows the spirits to be full members of the community. The live characters and spirits are seamlessly woven into the story. With Mystic Springs probably the only town to ever have a spirit Mayor.

    I highly recommend this series, even if you aren't typically a fan of paranormal mysteries.

    These were not bad, but agree with another reviewer. Once the whole town could see ghosts, Connie as the local medium didn't seem needed and how she managed to stay afloat with no incoming fees, is a mystery. The premise was fun, but something was lacking. For example, the first murder, and who the actual killer was. It just wasn't what I was expecting or wanting and yet I did figure it out about mid way through the story. And it seems thin. The second one was better, more believable, but also scarier if you think about ghost being able to harm living people. By book 4, Connie seems to have not only lost her source of income, since mediums are not in high demand when everyone who comes into the town can now see them, but she also lost her accent. In book 1, she was obviously British. By book 3, her accent faded. Perhaps it was her whole demeanor, but I also struggled with her being a good fit as a detective. Sage on the other hand was portrayed as too frivolous, but surprisingly astute. And as a ghost, a little more understandable that she may be able to ferry out information (at least when she wasn't visible to everyone), than Connie would be. Again, not bad stories, just not my absolute favorites.

    Sisters Connie and Sage are good at solving puzzles and identifying those guilty of murder. While the characters were well-drawn and mostly likable, some of the paranormal structure of the stories did not make sense to me. Spirits could not eat or drink, yet they badly needed to sleep and in a bad, no less. With practice, they could touch corporeal beings but rarely did so. They were very briefly found to be capable of injuring the living, but that capability was largely ignored. I somewhat enjoyed these stories but was so bothered by inconsistencies that I probably won't follow this author. Books could also benefit from the services of a good proofreader.

    While entertaining they could use some work. Mona Marple has come up with some interesting characters but has not really done them justice. Instead of trying to get as many books out there as she can she should take the time to craft her stories better.
