Mythily Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

1937. When Mythily's plane suddenly loses all power and crashes into the jungle of a mysterious uncharted island, she and her companion Barry are faced with a kaleidoscope of horrors. They discover they are not alone. Initially they think the giant flesh eating spider-crabs are their biggest threat, until they uncover a far bigger secret that threatens the entire world.

A survivor's tale of a lost island, alien visitation and giant flesh eating spider-crabs.

"A wild read, full of suspense, great characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing. If you like unusual and slightly barmy (in the best way) books, this is definitely for you!"

"Wombat brings such wonderful characters alive, even ones that aren't human. I laughed, I cried and I was thoroughly gripped. Definitely one worth reading."

"A brilliant, fast-moving story featuring giant crabs, zombies and so much more. One of those books that you think 'just one more chapter before I go to sleep...'."

A Yorkshireman living in the rural green hills of Lancashire, Michael Wombat is a man of huge beard. He has a penchant for good single-malts, inept football teams, big daft dogs and the diary of Mr. Samuel Pepys. Abducted by pirates at the age of twelve he quickly rose to captain the feared privateer ‘The Mrs. Nesbitt’ and terrorised the Skull Coast throughout his early twenties. Narrowly escaping the Revenue men by dressing as a burlesque dancer, he went on to work successively and successfully as a burlesque dancer, a forester, a busker, and a magic carpet salesman. The fact that he was once one of that forgotten company, the bus conductors, will immediately tell you that he is as old as the hills in which he lives. Nowadays he spends his time writing, telling tall tales in his bio, and pretending to take good photographs. You can have a good laugh at his blog or his photographs, but most of all please go and mock him mercilessly on Twitter or Facebook. Michael Wombat has published over one book. Other authors are available.

“Michael Wombat brought us to near tears by his short stories. He is a natural story teller.” – Diana Jackson, author of The Riduna Series.

5.0 out of 5 stars My kind of sci-fi horror

Michael Wombat is one of my favourite authors, and this book doesn't disappoint. He said he wanted to write one book that was bonkers, and although some might say it is, for me it's the perfect amalgamation of several genres in one. You have science fiction, space and aliens, and you have horror, giant flesh-eating spider crabs, mixed with zombies, plus a touch of historical fiction with the encroaching second world war and nazi's, and with characters and speech from that period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-fi horror and everything in between, a one-of-a-kind brilliant read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 9, 2024
The author’s introduction to this story draws you into something special and very original. The story is woven from Mythily’s journal and begins with its titular protagonist and her optimistic partner, Barry, in a vulnerable and exposed situation. Their plane has crashed and they’ve woken up on a mysterious island, that’s bad enough, but the island has horrors they can’t even begin to imagine.

If you suffer with both kabourophobia and arachnophobia, you will curse this book, but if not (and maybe even if you do) you will delight in the depth of description that bring these creatures alive, and you will even hear them… Mix in some classic sci-fi and horror ideas, well imagined and fleshed out characters, and a bit of a race against time, and you have a wonderful book that will not only keep you enthralled, but it will make you laugh and cry.

A wild read, full of suspense, great characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing. If you like unusual and slightly barmy (in the best way) books, this is definitely for you!

Such a good story! Everything happens! Everything! There are genuine shock moments. Sad bits too, but a satisfying ending. A really exciting and excellent adventure yarn in the classic 50s B movie style. I loved it.
