Last Orders: A Chilling and Claustrophobic Psychological Thriller (Last Orders and Last One Standing Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,273 ratings

From where I stand in the shadows outside the pub I own, I can already tell what mood my husband’s in and it makes me want to stay exactly where I am. However, I can also see my bar manager, Jay. Sexy, young and exciting, he’s the person who’s going to set me free from my middle-aged monotony.

I’m dreading turning fifty more than I’ve dreaded any other birthday in my life. Now that my kids are at university, the prospect of spending the rest of my life with my bullying, balding and boring husband is a miserable one.
Which is why I employed Jay. He gives me the reason I need to get up, to go on and to look forward.

And I’ll do anything to keep him.

He’s due to go travelling in a few days and wants me to go with him.

Every part of me screams to begin the new year as I mean to continue – by leaving the old behind in favour of the new. But I have a major obstacle to overcome.

Bryn. Since he’s discovered my affair, he’s realised how much he’ll lose.

And he’ll do anything to prevent me from leaving.

He’s hatching a plan for the New Year party we’re having at the pub this evening. But what he doesn’t know is that I’ve got one too. It’s just a matter of which one of us will go first.

Either of us could be the victim of what’s going to happen as the clock ticks into New Year’s Day.

And either of us could be responsible for it…

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.

Her novels are mostly set in Otley in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Maria’s novels are fast-paced, down to earth and realistic. You never know what’s around the corner…

Oh wow. This one threw me for a loop. We read about Bryn and Debra. She owns a bar but quickly falls for the bartender, Jay who will be leaving. Debra wants to go with him. But what to do with her drunken husband? And then the plot thickens when the bar catches fire (or was it set?) and Bryn gets caught in it.

There are unexpected twists and turns and the ending with throw a curve at you. New author for me and will definitely look into her other books.

Read this in one sitting! Very fast paced and the different POV keep you guessing what the outcome will be.
Add in a diverse group of completely self absorbed “adults” and you know it won’t end well.
Although I didn’t bond with any of them I was hoping for a slightly different outcome. I was silently screaming at Debra to wake up and see what was really going on.
But I won’t spoil it for others and just leave it at that.
Now I can’t wait to start the sequel!!
I waited to read the first book until I had the second in my collection because I knew it would be torture to wait for it to be available.
No one writes a sequel like Maria Frankland!! The first book flows right into the next.

Very life like people that have gone from a pleasant happy life to one that creates personal difficulties in living with one another. A very unique twist at the end. And who wins?

5.0 out of 5 stars A psych thriller at its best

What an excellent and riveting psychological thriller Last Orders by Maria Frankland is. I was totally absorbed in this book from the beginning.
Pub owner middle-aged Debra has had enough of her controlling bully of a husband Bryn and bored in their marriage. When she hires the sexy Jay as the bar manager and gets the hots for him, things get heated, and Bryn suspects something going on between the pair. Debra wants out and a life with Jay, Bryn says over his dead body. No way she's leaving, he'll make sure of it. Plans are being made one way or the other.
This is an exceptionally well written book by Maria. I love the greatly descriptive characters and settings in this suspense filled thriller.
It's a truly deserving 5-star rating for this exciting rollercoaster of a story.

really enjoyed this ! read in a couple of sittings . slow burn but keeps you hooked as it gradually builds up and up .
I was just a little disappointed at the end . i don’t want to give away any spoilers so I won’t name names but i’d like to have known how things panned out for a certain character and how they dealt with some stuff , as things hadn’t quite turned out for them . overall though it was a good read .

This is the 3rd book I've read by this author who I've only recently discovered. I have enjoyed all three so much and have purchased 4 more. I like the style of writing and all the twists and turns and find them very easy to read as they are not overloaded with too many characters. I found them very hard to put down as the need to find out what happens next is compelling.

Not what I would call a thrilling read and slow in a lot of parts. I didn’t like any of the main characters really except the kids. Intrigued to read the next book but only to see where the story leads.
