- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2018UX, while less new than many thing, is still a field where it feels really hard to grasp the basic concepts and get a good overview of what the field has to offer. This can be incredibly frustrating for newbies getting into the field (I fall in the first category), experienced UX designers attempting to get others onboard, and UX skeptics who don't understand the value or resources needed for the field.
As someone who wanted to get a better idea of the field for a career change, I was looking for a book that would provide a comprehensive overview of the UX field, especially since many places don't have an established UX system. For me, the User Experience Team of One was exactly the resource I was looking for. It provided and overview of the field, ways to advance personally and professionally, and most important - it also talked about how to advocate within your role if you are the sole UX Designer in an organization.
The main chapters which talk about design, research, and testing methodologies among other topics, also provide helpful tips for remote workers, ways that you can bring your coworkers into the UX design process, and a "if you only do one thing" section for the time-pressed professional.
I took off one star due to the fact that the book unfortunately is very small, leading to many of the images being incredibly tiny and hard to read. It makes a nice, light book for my train ride, but hard to read in practice.
Overall, if you only do one thing when trying to get an overview of UX.... read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2015I've been tasked with creating a user experience strategy for my company. This is new territory for us, plus some folks hold differing ideas of what this strategy even should be. This book was just the guide I needed. Not only did it cover the fundamentals of what should be included in a user experience strategy, but it also helped me identify practical methods for carrying out the strategy, and it provided helpful rationale for making the case of why each element is needed.
I feel the tension between needing to improve our UX culture quickly and being realistic that we need to take incremental steps. This book has encouraged me by revealing simple and effective steps we can take right now to get the ball rolling, while also helping to uncover intermediate goals that are the makings of a long-term, more mature vision.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2022This book was EXACTLY what myself and my organization needed. I can't believe I found it recommended on Tiktok! I'm currently the only UX designer in a small start-up minded company and me, my product owner team, and the rest of the company are committed to making our internal programs easier for our sale and operations people to use.
I admit, I was feeling quite daunted and having intense Imposter Syndrome at this role at first. I was constantly questioning whether I was doing the right things, making the right meetings, involving the right people and analytics tools. I'm only on chapter 4 of this book and it has undeniably confirmed that I in fact, am on the right path! It's been a huge relief, and I cannot wait to have my PO team read it!
Like it says within, it's a great book for a more seasoned UX designer like myself, and also for people more new to the process (my company and team). I feel so lucky to have found the perfect tool all in one to teach UX to all I work with.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2023The content of this book is priceless. It is truly a masterclass in UX design and processes and provides a rich toolset derived from the author's years of experience in some of the leading UX shops on the planet.
However, the physical size of the book makes it uncomfortable to read the copy, and close to impossible to decipher the illustrations. I don't have vision issues - but many illustrations have type at around 5 point size and sometimes smaller. My hypothesis is the book was intended for a larger format but printed smaller for financial reasons.
I am returning the printed copy and buying the printed + electronic copy from Rosenfeld media directly so that I can read it on a large screen.
Also, I recommend finding and watching the author's talks - Leah is a polished speaker and generously shares her tools and approaches.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2020I love this book. So much that I initially bought the Kindle version and ended up buying the hard copy. I will use it as my roadmap during any project I undertake. As someone who is trying to start their career in UX Research and/or Design, I love the "If you only do one thing" sections at the end of each chapter. It helps someone like me to quickly choose which research method to use if I am feeling lost. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2017Very helpful for both remote/contract designers as well as on-site, in house designers. Even if you work for a company with a lot of designers, this company provides a bunch of helpful methods and insights as to ways to take more ownership of product design. Also recommend for people working in related fields (product or project management, engineers, viz designers, etc) who'd like to introduce more UX practices into their team or make a transition in their career without going back to school. The beginning is a bit basic but has lots of useful examples and ideas for integrating into product development.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2014Use this book if you need to be completely flooded with techniques on conducting UX (mostly) on your own.
This book is written for people just getting started, but it's great for UX practitioners (like me) who find themselves introducing user research into a team that knows the benefits, but has no clue how to execute and scant patience.
You may recognize a lot of the techniques, and most of them are geared for quick and dirty implementation. I encourage you to read the table of contents, as all discussed techniques are listed there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy práctico y directo al grano de como abordar un proyecto
Lo recomendaría a personas que están comenzando en el sector. Me parece una guía bastante útil, la cual incluso seguiré consultando en mi día a día.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book, ever.
Now I won’t lie, I am starting off in the field of UX and am in the process of finalizing my first iteration of my portfolio. With some tools under my belt from school, and this book, I feel confident to start at a new job.
What I love about this book is that it is laid out like a cook book full of recipes, except this one tells you WHEN and WHY you should do each UX method, in a easily-glanceable couple pages.
I know for a fact I will keep this book wherever I go when I become employed. Junior or senior, I think anyone can benefit from this book - even those just gaining interest in UX. With so many methods and terminology, this book has it all in one place, easily accessible for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
Absolutely brilliant from start to finish.
This book has some sterling advice, clearly based on real experiences and provides practical solutions to the aspiring UX practitioner, as well as the more experienced professional.
Personally I found the practical tools the most helpful out of any book I've come across. Being able to apply good user experience techniques fits hand in hand with understanding the theories so having some real templates, guides and tools to get others involved in the process of user experience design is incredibly helpful.
Alongside the theories and tools, this book finally provides guidance and advice on getting others involved in the user experience process. These ideas and guides don't just apply if you're working on your own as a freelancer or contractor but work equally well if you're the only person in a team or organisation that seems user experience as something to care about.
Whether you're someone interested in learning more about user experience or already a practicing professional in the field, I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. It's worth more than it's weight in gold.
