Nelson & MacIlwraith: Moon Murder Mysteries I Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 645 ratings

No one wants a witch for a partner.

Time is running out, and the deck is stacked against Professor Lennox “Nox” MacIlwraith, unorthodox expert on the occult, rumored psychic and witch. Six girls have been abducted and now another has been found dead, tied to a tree. The FBI is refusing to see they’re connected, but Nox suspects a serial kidnapper and killer connected to an ancient Celtic cult is to blame.

Everyone in the FBI hates Agent Grady Nelson. Nelson’s ready to kiss what’s left of his career goodbye when he’s ordered to work with the crackpot “sketchy professor” on what should be a nuisance case. The investigation turns into a professional minefield, but all Nelson cares about is solving the case before the next full moon. If not, he fears the remaining girls will be sacrificed to a mythical god-king.

Rules are broken and lines are crossed as Nelson falls under Nox’s spell and begins to suspect his partner might be a real witch.

Nox is a little bit witchcraft, Nelson is a little bit Federal Bureau. Together, they’re a wickedly good team, but can they find the missing girls before it’s too late? Nox is prepared to sacrifice his own career and his life to save them. He’d also like to save Nelson, but is Nox ready to sacrifice his heart too?

A little bit of everything
5 out of 5 stars
A little bit of everything
Came for the mystical mystery, stayed for the top notch UST and food descriptions that left me with an oddly powerful craving for oatmeal Nelson’s father and grandfather were FBI legends, and the intention was for him to follow in their footsteps. Unfortunately the reality is he lives for a job that doesn’t love him back. Focused day and night, even in dreams, his career is still totally stalled. Repeatedly doing the right thing over the smart thing is admirable but has been a career killer. Nox MacIlwraith is an anthropology expert and charismatic college professor who has done work with FBI before. Brilliant but blunt, likely a witch, not many in the bureau want to work with him. He calls to them for attention to the cases of multiple missing young women, and with his knowledge and connections they can’t entirely ignore him. They can however shuffle him to agent non grata Nelson, with orders to appease him enough to keep him quiet. After he meets with Nox, Nelson learns these victims are not the easily dismissed flighty types he’d been told - Not that anyone *should* be easily dismissed like his ‘superiors’ believe! - also, the scope of the case is much larger than originally thought. At that point the story really gets going and this book is ✨fascinating✨ Without giving anything more away about the plot - because going in blind(ish) is best - I can say the further I got into the book the more invested I was in finding out exactly what was going on and making wild assumptions about the guilt or innocence of the characters. Closer to the finish, my heart got going a few times to where I feel like reading this book should count for cardio! There is *some* resolution to the storyline, but not completely. And that ending will probably have you yelling for more like I was/am! “To be continued”? I can’t wait! Note - This is a procedural, of sorts, following and trying to solve violent crimes, so please check the section just before the book begins for content warnings if there’s anything you’re worried about. Many thanks to The Author for this ARC!

Ms. Sterling has done it again. If you loved the boys of Lake Cliff, the bachelors of Bixby and/or the series that first introduced minor characters who become larger in Lake Cliff this is the series for you. This has a bit of many things; a college professor with many secrets, a false religion, a FBI agent who reminds me in some ways of my favorite Lake Cliff character and a wealth of information on Druids and the Celtic Pantheon. The characters are a bit younger than prior series being mid to late twenties instead of the thirty and forty something’s who are most often her main characters. The research needed to do this story right is intensive and the explanations are much easier reading than most source materials that are available. It is clear she did a lot of research and made sure she actually understood the source materials even when those sources disagreed.
The characters are relatable and fully developed. The storyline is intricate and weaves together mystery, police procedural, mythology, spirituality, romance, history, drama and so much more. This book makes you both feel and think. It will stick with you long after you finish.

This book was a little uneven in its plot and pacing. The author started building a really interesting mythology that ties into a really interesting detective mystery ploy, but the characters seem to be just doing a mix of running around to chase something down and then inexplicably stop, like I guess we will figure this out some other time do let’s go eat or whatever.

I’d classify this story as a crime drama with heavy romance and paranormal elements. Those paranormal elements are largely centered on ancient mysticism (think druids) and what could most easily be called psychic phenomena. In that regard, you might call this urban fantasy, but don’t go looking for vampires, shifters, ghosts, or zombies here. This is all way more within the realm of “it could happen”. In fact, I was quite pleased by the realism. I’ve driven from DC to Roanoke, and it does indeed take 4-5 hours (depending on traffic).

There were a few times when I wasn’t sure who was speaking/thinking or why someone had that particular reaction, but other than that…I thought the characters were interesting, well thought out, and compelling. I particularly favored Nelson.

I’m curious to see what direction the remaining books will go in and I’ve already developed some theories. But per author request, no spoilers. *wink*

The story felt very well researched. There’s a note at the beginning of the book that discusses the challenges related to researching things like ancient Irish mythology. I acknowledge and respect those challenges. As a reader that is NOT a subject matter expert on these topics, I also respect that I felt like I was “talking” to an expert. Good job, Ms. Sterling.

    Ms. Sterling,
I would like to see a pronunciation guide in these books, please. There aren’t very many Gaelic words, but they are impossible to pronounce with American phonetics. I dislike tripping over pronunciation, even in my own head. I was pronouncing the “harp” correctly ever since you explained that one. Help me out and drop an appendix in the next book. Thanks!

The plot and mystery at the heart of this book (and the whole series) had a lot of potential, but it got bogged down in way too much detail about the occult. At times, it felt less like a novel and more like someone wrote fanfiction based on a research paper about the Druids. I love well-researched worldbuilding, but here, it just dragged the story down instead of adding to it.

The writing itself felt off, and the constant POV shifts were confusing—I kept having to backtrack to figure out who was talking. In M/M fiction, where both main characters use "he/him" pronouns, clarity is super important, but this book didn’t handle it well.

Honestly, it didn’t read like the work of an experienced author. Honestly, the entire book gave me fanfiction vibes, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That said, the mystery was interesting enough (and my own curiosity about the occult kept me going), so I stuck with it.

I liked the mythic qualities of this story and the characters. It is super fast paced and the connections are quick. I can't wait to read the next book. I like the idea of magic and demi gods/gods being real but different than we think normally of them. I like also that Nelson is different in his intimacy needs and wants which hasn't always been added as options in romance books with action and mysteries so I really applaud the author! Well done :)

They've just met, and yet their relationship is the focus more than the case. Their chemistry interferes with the progress of finding the missing girls. Dreams, symbols, druids - I like all that. Will the next book in the series be about them, with another strange case in the background?
As for the mystery, I guessed who did it the moment they appeared, but that didn't take the charm away.

This is one ride I’m not ready to end! The slow burn had me on the edge of my seat constantly wondering who, what and why. Not only did the story put me in research mode, it made my heart happy. This is a very well done mystery with enough spookiness that screams Halloween and a few other delicious things. Im ready for book two!
The characters are a tad different from what we normally see from KS but just as intriguing and fun to watch. I got a bit of everything with this story and I loved it.

If you are already a K Sterling fan you know what to expect. This is a new series that includes all the best elements this author has to offer. The blend of mythology and theology old and new is interesting. It reads luke a try crime story and Nox and Nelson make a great pair. I can’t wait to read how their story and the mystery unfolds. I hope we learn more about side characters Merlin and Clancy too. Can’t wait for book 2.
