Never Rescue a Rogue (The Merriwell Sisters, 2) Paperback – November 8, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Virginia Heath’s Never Rescue a Rogue, the next book in the Merriwell Sisters series, is filled with whip-smart banter, swoony romance, hilarious mishaps, and twisty reveals that will make you gasp and laugh in delight.
Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair only tolerate one another for the sake of their nearest and dearest. Everyone believes that the two of them are meant to be together, but Diana and Giles know that their constant pithy barbs come from a shared disdain―not a hidden attraction. Diana loves the freedom of working at the newspaper too much to give it up for marriage, and Giles is happily married to his bachelor lifestyle. But they do have one thing in common―the secrets they can’t risk escaping.
When Giles’ father, the curmudgeonly Duke of Harpenden unexpectedly turns up his toes, it’s only a matter of time before someone comes crawling out of the woodwork who knows the true circumstances of his only son's birth. As the threat of blackmail becomes real, Giles must uncover the truth of his parentage first, or else he and all those who depend upon him will be ruined―and dogged bloodhound Diana is his best hope at sniffing out the truth. As Giles and Diana dive into his family’s past, the attraction that the two of them insisted wasn’t there proves impossible to ignore. Soon, the future of the Sinclair estate isn’t the only thing on the line…

About the author

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happily ever after. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Thirty Regency Romcom books, two publishers and four Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations later, and it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

Will the truth strip him from more than his sire’s legacy…
I remember while reading the first book not being entranced by Diana, she was the suspicious one, not always shown under the best light compared to her mother hen of an older sister.
Yet here, I loved her, the dynamic of her relationship with Giles is sweet and amusing.
So for readers who are new to this series, there is no need to read the first book (outside wanting to learn more about Minerva and Hugh’s courtship) to appreciate this one.
Diana is determined to make way to the sun, even if it is in the shadow, she is more than the copy editor she lets “everyone” believe her to be. She is a righter of injustice, a dust’s digger and skeleton’s hunter. She searches among the worst of the ton to reveal the cheater or abuser of the weaker, all because her trust in the male side of humankind has been chattered by her feckless and shameless of a sire, a man ready to sell his blood to settle his debts without a backward thought.
Giles is the opposite of what he lets society believes. His outrageous parties have only one purpose, to chock his frosty sire. When he hardly drinks and really cares of those who have not the same power than him. As he knows he lives his present life on borrowed time, he has assured himself his pecuniary avenir, but what of his name.
His future becomes even more unsure when he inherits much earlier than he assumed his father’s title. From there he has only one purpose assure the best possible outcome for those depending of the dukedom.
Yet when threats appear to come true, he knows of only one person to sort of the truth, the torn in his backside, the woman who haunts his dreams and the one he can confide his darkest secrets.
Opposite to the first book, Diana’s relatives are more a faire-valoir and appear only here and there along the narrative, not really, except for the younger Merriwell sister, part of the investigation nor its resolution.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2022From the moment they met, Diana Merriwell and Giles Sinclair have been at odds. They tolerate each other for the sake of their loved ones, but if it were up to them, they'd never even look in the other's direction. But, of course, everyone believes their verbal jabs are a ploy to hide their mutual pining. Diana is far too independent and has worked too hard to climb up the ranks as a journalist to be tied down, and Giles is harboring a dark secret that could ruin him. When Giles's father unexpectedly dies, Giles inherits a dukedom, and it doesn't take long for someone to sniff out the truth behind his birth. Desperate to uncover his parentage before anyone else, Giles enlists the investigative help of Diana. But as they dive into his past, it's clear the tension between them is more than animosity. Not only are their livelihoods at stake, but their hearts as well.
The whole time I was reading the first book in this series, I was dying over the tension between Diana and Giles, so I was so excited to dive into this one. They have such playful, teasing banter that I adore. It's so fun watching them rattle each other. Both know what buttons to push to work the other up, and every interaction has you going, "Ok, now kiss." The romance was the standout here. It was lovely watching them open up and share the most vulnerable parts of themselves. Diana is such a force to be reckoned with, and I love how Giles not only accepts her the way she is but encourages her to be as bold as she wants. That said, the actual plot of this was a bit boring. Nothing really happens until about the 60% mark, and while the secret of Diana's job and Giles's background was a little interesting, I never found myself invested in either storyline. I still enjoyed Heath's writing style and the secondary characters (once again, we have a sassy butler who steals the show), and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2024It's a fun read. The women characters are witty, self-reliant, forthright, and not Regency debutants. The men are softies at heart with questionable exteriors. I enjoyed so I am giving it 4 stars for keeping me entertained. I dropped a star because it lacks some of the period details one ought to find in a Regency Romance. Period wise it appears to be a bit later than Regency in the some parts but earlier in others and it takes me out of the story somewhat.
My other issue is one that I find is common in many current romance novels both contemporary and period: The (usually male) main character has some deep seated trauma, usually that he was unloved and unwanted as a child, but is cured by love. Adults form their attitudes and behaviors toward the opposite sex from their experiences with the members of that sex during childhood and unloved children grow up to be adults who can't love. Unless Giles had a positive female role model and/or a mentor, who helped he see the value in helping others, he could never have become the kind hearted and generous person who is depicted in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn’t put it down!
This 2nd book focuses on Diana, the second Merriwell sister, and Giles, a handsome duke and Hugh’s best friend.
The chemistry and banter between Diana and Giles is hilarious and cute, even steamy at times. I couldn’t wait to read about them, seeing as how they already had such an interesting dynamic going on between them in the first book.
After Giles’ father died, leaving his title and land to his only son, someone with bad intentions shows up, determined to steal his title, claiming that poor Giles is the bas*a*d son of the previous duke! (which means he can’t legally be considered his heir.)
To save Giles from such an unfortunate fate, who’s better than Diana, a fearless journalist used to uncover all sorts of juicy secrets the high society tries so hard to keep hidden?
Together, they search for the truth about Giles’ upbringing and the proofs needed to legitimate his claim on his inheritance.
So… I’m usually a strictly romance type of reader and I would be lying if I said I don’t like my books *hella* spicy, however - although there was only one scene at the end of the book that was more steam than spice - I didn’t mind it that much! I was so entertained by the plot, rooting for Giles to be saved and eager to know the mysteries surrounding his birth that romance felt a bit secondary at some times. But it worked! This book was a perfect mix between both, going from mysterious, sometimes even stressful scenes, to funny banter and hot chemistry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imperdibile
Another five stars read from Ms Heat.
I loved the two characters. Diana and Giles try to protect their hearts behind a smoke screen. She as a cynic, independent woman, he as a dissolute rogue, but their hearts beat at the same rhythm.

5.0 out of 5 stars love me a good heroine named Diana
Oh how I waited for this book! It. Did. Not. Disappoint.
You know I generally love the second installments in regency series. I can’t help myself. And this was so well written. #approved
Diana is the second Merriwell sister and the i-will-never-marry-type. She loves her independence and works at a newspaper. You know #virginiaheath had me at this point. Throw in her nemesis Giles Sinclair -future Duke of Harpenden and their unique enemies-to-lovers, bickering, yet kind of best friends dynamic….
The plot thickens when Giles and Diana unite to investigate Giles‘ family secrets.
They both come off so cold hearted and calculating, but as we all know : BEST PEOPLE AT HEART! Aaaaah did i already say how much i love those second books in a series??? 🫢

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
Such an enjoyable book. I love Diana, a determined intelligent woman with her own plans, and Giles, with his hunger for biscuits. It has everything I want in a Regency romance and more. Fabulous fun!
