4.3 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

When silence hides the truth, who will speak out?

In a luxury retirement home, where appearance matters more than the truth, some people will go to any lengths to stop the truth being revealed. Until resident Anthony Trimble predicts his own murder.

Naturally suspicious, Kent makes inquiries, unaware of the historical horrors he may uncover.

When he’s given a set of numbers left for him by Trimble, the mystery intensifies. Could the numbers be a code to unlock the past? Or the ramblings of a man with dementia?

As Kent struggles to find a key to unlock the numbers, people start dying.

With the killer following his every move, will Kent perish before he can reveal Trimble’s darkest secrets?

If you enjoy reading fresh and exciting murder mysteries with a distinctive sleuth, memorable characters and complex, twisting plots, the Downland Series may be just what you’re looking for?

With contemporary themes and characters, irreverent humour and a touch of romance, the Downland Murder Mysteries bring a fresh twist to the classic whodunit.

By combining my love of crime fiction with my experiences as an environmental health officer, my murder mysteries are for readers who like to curl up with a cosier, entertaining type of crime novel, filled with characters they can grow to love.

The series should appeal to readers who like authors such as Richard Osman, Elly Griffiths, Agatha Christie, Clare Chase or Sue Grafton.

Thoroughly e joyed this 3rd book of the serious. Each one fleshed out more of the main characters
Especially the leading man, Kent Fisher. He never plans to read people he just becomes curious about something and in his pursuit to find out more and then , whomp , a mystery develops.

When Mr Trimble dies in Nightingales retirement home, Kent Fisher is suspicious, and not only because of the puzzling set of numbers the old man left him. Is the death due to natural causes, or could there be something sinister going on? Manager Miss Rudolph doesn’t like answering Kent’s questions, but receptionist Louise is happy to help. Trouble is, so is Gemma, Kent’s former love-interest, who is now due to marry the charming Richard. Are the two women competing for the post of ‘Watson’ to Kent’s ‘Holmes’? Meanwhile, a shadowy individual leaves a series of threatening notes on Kent’s car windscreen.

This is the third in the Kent Fisher (Environmental Health Inspector and part-time sleuth) series of mysteries by Robert Crouch, and it’s another slam-dunk. As with many of Lee Child’s books, the story starts with a question – is someone trying to kill Mr Trimble? If so, who and why? And thus the scene is set for a proper conundrum that’ll keep everyone guessing. The plot doesn’t give our hero much room to make mistakes but as the mystery unravels, the twists and turns have a nice edge to them. And then there’s the Kent/Gemma scenario, which adds another layer of complications to the plot. The writing, as always, is spot on and the author’s character development is flawless.

If you’re looking for a mystery that’ll leave you panting for more, this is it.

This third book in the Kent Fisher Mysteries series is wonderful! I loved it! Even if it gave me such a hard time composing my review as there are so many things happening and yet, so little to be said about it to not spoil your pleasure in reading ‘No Remorse’! The turmoil in Kent’s head is about to explode as he walks the scary path towards a (proper?) relationship and whether he is able to definitely put his love for Gemma at rest, is for you to find out! In ‘No Remorse’ the author gives us so much insight into Kent, his past, his thoughts and feelings and his attitude towards almost everything.

I loved the author’s play with humour and sarcasm relating to his protagonist’s thoughts. There are quite a few plotlines that the author cunningly weaves together while mixing lighter topics with harrowing and gruesome ones and to top it off, there are shocking and dangerous situations… To me, the Kent Fisher series keeps getting better by the book, I love it! The characters, the plot, the relationship(s), the many events taking place… No Remorse has wet my appetite for the next book in the series

Kept me reading to the end (skimming at times), but this third Kent Fisher murder mystery was ultimately disappointing. Too much sexual content. The plot became confusing, even perverse. Don't think I will continue the series, though it is well written and intriguing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant series - and humour too
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 17, 2018
This is the third in the Kent Fisher series and there’s enough backstory here for you to read it as a stand-alone. It begins with a bang when an old man in a care home tells Kent that someone’s going to kill him. Soon after, he dies. That starts our hero off sleuthing. We meet a new love-interest, but Gemma, his old flame, still burns brightly. Kent teases the threads from an old story and puts himself in danger.

The thing I love about these stories is that there’s no dry police procedure. I know some people love it, but Fisher is an ordinary person, like us. It puts the reader at the heart of the mystery. The characters are strong and credible, and the author’s love for the Downland countryside shines through. I love this series. A completely different take on the thriller and mystery genre, and written by a man who doesn’t fall into cliché. I think this one is the best so far. Very enjoyable.

The third novel in this series is really developing all the characters and their back story. The story is totally credible and the way it is written makes you keep turning the pages. I found it really hard to put down, and thoroughly enjoyed this new take on crime novels. Refreshing for it not to be a police investigation, in fact an EHO investigating seems to put the local police to shame! Really looking forward to the next book.

To date Robert Crouch has published three books about Environmental Health Inspector and part-time sleuth, Kent Fisher. The latest, “No Remorse,” is my favourite. As already mentioned in some of the other reviews, this book can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone thriller, but if you read the earlier two books as well, I think your enjoyment will be amplified.
The storyline gets off to an exciting start when an old man in residential care tells Kent Fisher someone is planning to murder him. This book can be read on two levels, one, it is classic who done it murder mystery with both clues, and humour sprinkled throughout. What I found more interesting, is what makes this fictional amateur detective tick. Kent Fisher is a complex, but likeable character, and as I'm normally not a huge fan of crime thrillers it is Kent's personal life I like to read about. Like me Kent is an animal lover, a romantic, possibly even a bit of an idealist.
I like the gentle caring relationship he has with his step-mother, his extremely complicated on/off love life with the beautiful Gemma, and the empathy he shows when dealing with victims of crime. I thoroughly recommend this novel, it is a cracking read.

Really enjoyed this book. The series is getting better all the time as you get to know the characters . Agree with previous reviewer. They can stand alone but it's best to read them in order. The author has the ability to describe localities very well, plot lines are deliciously complex leading to the final reveal. And then there is Gemma.....I read this over 2 days in the garden on a hot long weekend. Couldn't put it down!
