Not Until Then: A Christian Romance (Hope Springs Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 2,422 ratings

James came to Bethany’s rescue the day they met. So why can’t she seem to remember his name? And why can’t he seem to forget her?

After surviving a brain aneurysm that left her with short-term memory problems, Bethany is happy to simply get through each day without forgetting to pack her daughter a lunch. She’s been a single mom since Ruby was born, and that’s the way she likes it. She’s found family in the large group of friends who have welcomed her in Hope Springs, and she doesn’t need a special someone. Especially not one as grumpy as James.

James already had a family once—and lost everything. So when he goes to Hope Springs to visit his sister, he has no interest in letting her play matchmaker. Even if her beautiful—though forgetful—friend Bethany intrigues him. But Bethany has a daughter—and even if James were willing to risk his heart on a woman again, he would never risk it on another child.

Between his sister’s schemes and her daughter’s needs, it seems James and Bethany just can’t avoid each other. And the more time they spend together, the more they both start to long for more. But when a tragedy looms, they have to decide if love is worth the risk—or if they’d be better off forgetting they’d ever met.

USA Today bestselling author Valerie M. Bodden has three great loves: Jesus, her family, and books. And chocolate (okay, four great loves). She writes emotion-filled Christian fiction that weaves real-life problems, real-life people, and real-life faith. Her characters may (okay, will) experience some heartache along the way, but true to her tendencies as a hopeless romantic, she will always give them a happy ending. Valerie is living out her happily ever after with her high-school-sweetheart-turned-husband and their four children. The whole family is currently learning to say "y'all" instead of "you guys" after moving from Wisconsin to Texas. Visit her at www.valeriembodden.com to get your free book.

This is one of Valerie’s best books. From the 1st sentence I was at home in Hope Springs & ready to fall in love with Bethany, James & Ruby and I was not disappointed but fell in love immediately.
Bethany is so kind you can immediately feel her beautiful spirit. Right off the bat James is taken with her and we off to the beginning of a beautiful, tender romance & you just can’t put the book down, but do grab a couple of tissues.
This book is filled with Valerie’s beautiful and strong spirit and comes through in these characters. Ruby if a sweet little girl who loves her Mama so much and quickly loves James as she cracks the Very hard shell around James ❤️ heart.
You will leave this book with a much stronger testimony of how much God loves and helps each one of us.
Even if you have not read the other books you can read this one and I am sure afterwards you will want to read them all. Each one is fabulous.

This was a wonderful read. This book made me feel like I was right there with James, Bethany and Ruby. It showed how loss can affect us in negative ways and how we try to close our hearts to love…BUT GOD often has good plans for us. It showed the struggles that could occur after an aneurysm and a little girl having to grow up dealing with a parent with memory loss. Wonderful book. I recommend reading it.

II liked how people didn't give up on each other. Forexample, understanding why James had so much guilt. Bethany had a serious condition but the family accepted her just as she was. The little girl had the most amazing. Personality in the story. Rudy stole the fun in the story. Recommend reading but it is long and probable could have been shorter.

Not Until Then: A Christian Romance (Hope Springs Book 9) by Valerie M. Bodden
Ever wonder if God has a plan for His creation? Does people really need God's love?
Bethany was so blessed for surviving an automobile accident due to an aneurysm.
The worst side effect was that her short term memory was affective. Life took on a lot of changes for both Bethany and her young daughter. Did God have a plan even in this challenging circumstance. Her daughter, Ruby, for the most part was a huge help for her mother yet at times she cringed at Bethany's forgetfulness. James, a Detective on medical leave, met Bethany on one of her rough low memory day. James was use to coming to the aid of strangers. Yet, he was broken ever since his 5 year old daughter died in a tragic accident. He had memories he could not forget.
Bethany's faith is firm. James' faith is fading. What good could God's plan work in these hurting people?
There were some tearful moments reading their story yet so many hopeful outcomes too. Very well written!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bethany, Ruby and James
Reviewed in Canada on February 14, 2025
In book 8, Bethany is in a car accident, and hospitalized with a coma. Now in book 9, Bethany is home and able to care for 10yr old Ruby, but her short term memory is awful. James is in town, visiting his sister Emma, on mandatory leave as he heals from a work injury. His 5 yr old daughter died 5 years ago, and he has stuffed the sorrow way down. He's afraid of loving again, in case he loses that person also. He needs to relearn to trust God with his future, and to take joy in daily occurrences.
I lost a son, aged 23. I know that healing comes with talking about our grief, and surrounding ourselves with a caring Christian community.

When you know there's a book by Valerie being published you count the days till release. Then there's a kind of reluctance to start reading it because you know when you do it means you're nearer finishing it and you don't want it to end! This book doesn't disappoint! The story is exquisite and beautifully written.
