Off-Ice Collision: A Grumpy Sunshine Hockey Romance (Wyncote Wolves Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 475 ratings

*This is a new, steamy standalone from the Wyncote Wolves world, featuring a broken and grumpy, yet possessive hero*

Vaughn

One moment in time, one freak accident, and my entire hockey career was over.

Two years have passed since my injury and I am still mentally struggling with this loss.

Mad at the world and everyone in it, I sought solace at my parents' lake house for the summer.

It was supposed to be somewhere for me to be alone and heal.

But when London Hayes walks back into my life, the universe has different plans.

And I need to find a way to derail them because I refuse to drag her down with me.

London

It had been over two years since I'd last seen Vaughn Carter.

And he feels like a stranger.

Cold and distant, abrasive and angry.

He’s a shell of a person compared to the version I used to know, but I know he’s still in there.

Somewhere deep inside is the man I used to love, but he needs help finding himself again.

And I won’t be the one to give up on him, even if it costs me my own heart in the end.

Follow you into the dark

Follow you into the dark
“You just have to let me in so I can find you.” “You belong in the light, not the darkness.” “I’ll follow you into the dark.” All good things must come to an end at some point… and it’s Wyncote Wolves time. The series went out with a bang with Off-Ice Collision. This book was definitely my favorite from the series. This book had it all: Friends to Enemy-ish to lovers, second chance, grumpy x sunshine, sports-ish, summer love, heartbreak, healing, acceptance. I love that this book is mostly set in the summer. It’s got that late-night, falling in love by the lake, never want to let you go vibes. After being dealt a difficult path and having to leave the hockey world, Vaughn, falls down a path of destruction and depression. London is always fighting her brother’s battles and it takes a toll on her. Eventually, London and Vaughn’s paths collide. Vaughn and London just seemed to fit. Together they began to heal, find themselves, and love for one another. There were lots of twists and turns along the way. London’s brother was a tad bit scandalous but he added a little something extra to the book. This book touches on some really tough situations, but it’s done tastefully. Depression is represented really well with how Vaughn acts and chooses to go about things. Don’t worry, he isn’t all gloom and doom – he does heal. At one point Vaughn mentions his cousin Ander having dealt with addiction and my heart was so happy that this character was mentioned. Ander is from the In Vein series by C.M. Radcliff (aka Cali Melle). AND two other characters were mentioned which are from an upcoming book that Cali wrote. I love that she chose to tie in all these books and series from both of her pen names. With Off-Ice Collisions being the end, I sort of expected to see more characters from the series and to get a small update on them. Either way, though, I’m content with how the book and series ended. I can’t wait to see what else Cali Melle has up her sleeve.

Oh my heart is broken that this series is over. Vaughn and London closed it out for us with A heartfelt story. The feels were off the charts with this book. I have loved these guys, but Vaughn stole my heart....what a great way to end it.

This was a good series and worth reading. Lots of different characters and story lines. I always enjoy hockey stories.

Vaughn and London were made for eachother. Totally opposite and with different lives yet they fit perfectly together. Seeing Vaughn be a complete stranger and hopeless hurt my heart. London being there by his side and showing him that his life has still a purpose was beautiful. The epilogue was perfect for them and I'm so happy to see both of them happy and in love

This is such a bittersweet moment with it being the last book of the series. Vaughn and London just had my heart locked in their hands throughout reading this and I am completely fine with that. Some of the more “darker” themes on the emotional side had me connecting with Vaughn on a whole other level. The highs and lows of life are never easy to go through, but having people who never give up on you and help you grow are rare to find. I understood London’s need to help people who don’t want to help themselves. Not wanting to see them suffer but not knowing how to help is sometimes unbearable. But they have to want the help for any change to happen. Just a beautiful story of finding yourself again after a tragic accident, exploring different paths, and reconnecting with the people who love and are there for you.

“You don’t owe anyone anything, London,” he tells me, his voice barely audible. His expression is unreadable and my stomach does a somersault as I stare at him. “Stop apologizing for shyt you don’t need to be sorry for and stop wasting your words on people who don’t deserve them.”

“You’re getting lost in your thoughts instead of letting them go.” “Easier said than done,” Vaughn replies gruffly, his voice hoarse. “Where did you go?” He silently stares at me for a moment before he shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter. None of it matters.” “I refuse to believe that,” I argue. “Everything matters, even the stuff that hurts us the most.”

“Vaughn needs someone and all he’s doing is showing his fangs to send everyone running in the opposite direction. My brain and my heart are at war with one another right now. The logical part of me knows that I should listen to my instincts and stay as far away from him as possible. My heart protests.”

“You belong in the light, not the darkness.” “I’m not afraid of it,” she breathes, her breath fanning across my face. “I’ll follow you into the dark.”

“I’m not asking for you to love me, Vaughn.” “Then what are you asking for?” Emotion wells in her eyes. “For you to let me help you find yourself.” “Even if it hurts in the end?” “Even if it hurts in the end,” she repeats as a smile pulls on the corners of her lips. “Do your worst to me, Vaughn Carter.”

“There’s something about her that brings me a sense of peace, like nothing in the world truly matters. It doesn’t wash away the anger or the pain I feel, but she gives me hope. Hope that maybe this isn’t the end of life for me.”

“Let me be your compass,” I whisper against his lips. “Let me be your anchor.” “I don’t know how,” he says, the hopelessness laced throughout his words. “I’ve iced everyone out for the past two years.” “It’s never too late to change your course.”

“The way I feel for you… I’ve never felt it with anyone else.” I pause for a moment, swallowing roughly over the emotions in my throat. “I love you, London. I have since we were kids. I just refused to let myself feel any of it.”

Vaughn Carter is a broken man. After a devastating hockey injury in the previous books, Vaughn is still readjusting to life at home two years later. He’s every bit the broody mess you can imagine when you think about someone who had their dream snatched away in the blink of an eye. Despite how much time that has passed since the life changing incident, the pain is still there. Both mental and physical. It’s hard for him to move on, when hockey was his everything. If he can’t play, what’s the point? Finally when his mom can’t stand to see him waste his life away anymore, he gets sent to his family’s summer home to help run the business they own.

London feels like she’s daydreaming when she see’s Vaughn’s shadowy figure standing next door. Her twin quickly brings her up to speed and tells her that their childhood friend is back for the season. She tries to pick up where they left off, but it’s been years since they’ve crossed paths and this new Vaughn is nothing like the boy she used to know. This Vaughn is all hard edges and filled with so much anger, yet something in him calls to her.

There’s so many reasons they should stay away from each other, the biggest one being Vaughn’s inability to accept his current circumstances. His head is stuck back on the ice and can’t see a way forward, but London wants nothing more than to show him the light.

    “I want to fix you.”
    —“I’m broken beyond repair, baby.”

Our heroine is a lover of broken things. London is a sweet cherub with horrible decision making skills who can do no wrong. Even when she was making frustratingly dumb choices, I still loved her. She’s has such a kindness to her, but I appreciated that she didn’t mince words when it came to dealing with Vaughn. She’s the perfect type of character that makes our hero finally want something more than where he’s at in life.

This is a beautiful story about healing. Vaughn has been through plenty of surgeries for his knee injury, which may have healed his physical injuries, but left his heart and spirit cracked open. He spends so much time feeling sorry for himself, which was painful to read. Especially when it impacts his relationship with London. There are times when Vaughn seems very childish in the way that he runs from his problems, but it was so rewarding watching him claw his way up from rock bottom. It’s one thing for someone to want to fix you, but another altogether to want to fix yourself.

You have to read this book! It’s a bit of a heavier read in comparison to the playfulness of the other books, but it still had so much sweetness mixed in between. There’s barely any hockey, but there’s plenty of angst, tension, chemistry, and spice. It was such a lovely end to the series and I felt like it left the series open to a few different spin offs. There were lots of interesting side characters that will hopefully make an appearance in other books.

    If you like:
    Struggling hero
    Mental health representation
    Healing from injury
    Childhood friends
    Supportive families
Finding a new path in life
….You should have to read this!

Thank you to Literally Yours PR for the copy of this ARC! I’m sad for this series to be over but I cannot wait for what comes next.

I feel like we've waited ages for Vaughns story. We learned of his injury earlier in the series and I knew his recovery and life afterwards were going to be difficult. London is like a ray of sunshine in his dark cloud and she brings him back to life. I love their story, so sweet and romantic. Vaughn is dark and brooding even 2 years later after he knows his hockey career is over. I love how he doesn't hide his feelings for London and wants to become a better man for her. Their story is such a perfect ending to the Wyncote Woles world x

After reading Coast to Coast, I was hoping this book would deliver the same standard as it, I was extremely happy when Off ice Collision delivered it was an emotional read and I loved the development of Vaughn, who had gone through a painful event a career ending injury that changed the direction of his life, while he was angry about this, throughout the book, he was able to come to terms with this and he gradually accepted that he had a new path to follow. London and Vaughn got off to a rough start in this book, Vaughn because of his anger towards his career ending and London because she is worried about her brother, but London also felt a connection with Vaughn and I loved reading the development of their relationship.
