The Orc and the Manny: A Cozy M/M Monster Romance (Monsters Hollow Book 1) Kindle Edition
Welcome to Monsters Hollow, where love knows no bounds—even in a town full of monsters!
Targan Wildethorne
A confirmed bachelor, and a historian by training, I haven’t the faintest clue how to care for twin orclings when I unexpectedly become their guardian. I’d love to retreat into the comforting sanctuary of my study, surrounded by my books and papers, but first I need to hire someone to help me with the children. Someone who can teach me the ropes of this new role.
Thank the Light for the All-Species Specialized Employment Services! In my most dire hour of need, they find the perfect nanny—ahem, manny—to help me look after my young wards. Now I can finally get back to writing my history of orc folklore for a few hours a day.
Or so I thought.
Instead I find the captivating new man in my home far too distracting. Max is so much more than I had expected. I’ve never fallen for a human before, but I can’t get him out of my mind. Could he ever feel the same about an orc? Humans are usually too intimidated by our large size and outer appearance. Can Max look past my green skin and tusks to see a man with a heart that yearns for him? And if he does, when he learns the truth about the children will the danger on the horizon send him running?
Max MacLeod
Working with kids is totally my jam and I’m damn good at what I do. Just call me Maxy Frickin’ Poppins! When a new job prospect comes my way, I’m intrigued. A chance to move to Mystic Hollow (aka Monsters Hollow) to be a well-paid manny for two adorable orclings? Talk about a dream position. Sold! But when I lock eyes with the seriously sexy orc who’s their guardian—and my new de facto boss—for the first time, I’m a goner. Big, muscular, and green all over–he’s giving me full-on Hulk meets stern professor vibes—and I like it.
As I get to know him, over meals with the kids during the day and soft-spoken conversations about history at night, I soon realize there’s so much more to Targan than the gorgeous orc who keeps starring in all my naughtiest dreams. He’s quite possibly the kindest, gentlest man I’ve ever met. And he accepts and appreciates every part of me and my flamboyant, full-figured fabulousness. I just want to feed and take care of him—and find out if he’s so deliciously big everywhere. Before I know it, I’m dreaming of being part of a forever family with him and his adorable twins. But an unexpected threat looms in the shadows that could threaten the safety of us all…
The Orc and the Manny is a (94k words) cozy small town M/M monster romance featuring a Hulkalicious silver fox orc professor who's better with books than kids, a flamboyant human manny with ALL the skills (think Nathan Lane in The Birdcage meets Mary Poppins), an age gap, a size difference, a three-headed hellhound and a feisty rescue Chihuahua, two adorable orcling twins, and copious amounts of orc…joy!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2024I absolutely adored this book! The characters are fun and adorable and so dang lovable! This well-written story gave me all the feels and I loved every word. I think Targan might be my favorite orc I’ve read thus far.
I love this small town, a safe haven for Otherkind, and all of its residents. I’m ready to pack my bags and move to Monster’s Hollow.
With plenty of humor, all the cuteness and sweetness, and tons of heart, this story was utterly delightful. It’s a perfect example of why I’m a big Chloe Archer fan. I want to read all of her books!
I’m very eager to read the next book in this series! (Vash & Ryder’s story)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2023The Orc and the Manny is a low angst romance about processing grief, making a house a home, and falling in love. Targan and Max are so lovely together! This book is instalove, but it fit these two well. And I really loved how the family dynamics and kids were written. It’s the perfect story to read when you need a happy and fluffy romance.
I highly recommend not comparing this book to Chloe’s Tentacular Tales series. Sure they have similarities (sassy MC, interesting world building, funny banter), but this one is a lot lighter on the plot and much more focused on the romance. (No complaints!)
I’m really looking forward to the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2024This book was everything I wanted in a cozy paranormal romance. I've been looking for something low angst in a modern paranormal romance for awhile and this delivered in spades. The lore of this world with Otherkind and humans was fascinating to learn about and I can't wait to continue to learn about more Otherkind in future books. These two were so sweet together. I loved that it was about an orc who was soft spoken and highly intelligent when most orcs aren't depicted in a positive light in romances in my opinion. And this is the first time I've read a romance in so long where there's a plus size MC that isn't belittled for his weight! Brilliantly done and can't wait for more in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025I loved this book! I was sold when I read the description and it was everything I hoped it would be!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024This was a fantastic read! The only complaint I have is the constant reuse of certain phrases throughout the entire book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025I’ve read all of Monsters Hollow except for Ryder’s and Vash’s story, which is up next. So far, I enjoyed The Bogeyman and the Schoolteacher the most. This one was enjoyable and fun but there were things about it that just fell flat. Targan is a lovable characther through and through. He’s a big tough Orc who’s really a total marshmellow. Max, on the other hand, took a lot of getting used to. I really appreciate that he was written as an average-body type character instead of the gym bunny types that writers of MM romance like to write. I’m neutral on the flamboyant aspect but I did find the use of the word “honey” severely oveused along with Max exlaiming “that’s so hot” at almost everything Targan did and said.
I would like to have had more drama in the story. Considering the events that led to Targan having custody of Harn and Yara, I would have expected something more to happen. Instead, it was all fluffly until the end, and then it was over as quickly as it started. Considering the danger, it made no sense that Max went with Ryder back to Ryder’s condo totally unprotected. Even if there wasn’t a danger to Max, there was still a threat to Ryder.
But still, flaws and all, this series has been a fun read thus far.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2025The sass and humor had me hooked from the very first chapter. Max and Targan are complete opposites, but together, they just work. And Targan, of course, has the sweetest kids ever.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2023So stinking amazing! I had been waiting oh so impatiently for this book ever since I read the prequel novellas, it was absolutely worth the wait. Such an amazing story! This author is reasonably new but has stolen the spotlight in my top authors list with every single one of their books. Absolutely amazing world building and descriptions of the characters and their world. I love monster hollow so much and can’t wait till next year for next one. Until then I will probably end up reading the orc and the manny several more times. This series is a definite must read for romance and monster lover alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful body-positive monster romance
4.5/5 This was cozy fun all the way! Max is a cooking-loving body-positive nanny-of-your-dreams. He’s kind, helpful, and enthusiastic in everything he does. He takes Targan, Yara, and Harn by storm, making their lives so much better (and gaining so much in return). Targan is intelligent, determined … and entirely overwhelmed by how much his life has recently changed.
This seemed at first that this was going to be pure instalust, but then I was pleasantly surprised by them actually stopping to address the perceived power imbalance, the possible impact on the children, etc. Although the physical attraction was fast, it soon became evident that behaviour, intellect, and plenty of other factors were impacting their attraction, and I appreciated the time they took to get to know one another. (Honestly, it felt longer than a couple of weeks.)
I loved how Max integrated with the town (and helped Targan integrate better), how he engaged so positively with the kids (and helped Targan do so too), and how good a friend he is. It was great to meet other townsfolk and learn more about the town. I liked that we get some resolution at the end of this book (and that Max is fierce!), but we also have some great hints about what’s to come for Ryder in the next book. (All that UST, lol.) Can’t wait for it!
(As an aside, I won’t penalise the book for this, but it really annoys me that we decided we had to come up with a word like “manny”—or man-bun or man-purse—to modify an existing word that we apparently felt the need to make more gendered. Sigh.)
I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meet cute
Targan is a retired professor writing his next history book and requires someone to take care of the twins he’s adopted when his friend was murdered by her ex.
Enter Max a sweet cinnamon roll of a manny to get everything back into control.
This book is so sweet and also hot and spicy

4.0 out of 5 stars Kids, magic and love
Chloe Archer’s Orcs are not how they are typically portrayed. She has fun playing with the stereotypes and it sounds like her Monster Hollow series will have more of that in each of the volumes. It’s very sweet and funny except for one bit near the end and I enjoyed reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 🥰
This is a wonderful story! My first time reading this author and I love the world building and the wide variety of Otherkind in the book. Max is just instantly loveable with his flamboyant style and delightful personality, Targan is a Orc in need of a sprinkling of help and Max brings sunshine and joy to his home. The children are funny and I adored the dogs. A great read and I’m looking forward to more stories in this world.
