Off the Hook: A Small Town Single Dad Romance (Never Harbor Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 3,535 ratings

I need a nanny, but I may need her more.

I know about my reputation as Never Harbor’s secluded single dad. But I have everything I need: my imaginative son, my dog, and our remodeled cottage by the sea.

That is, until my nanny quits.

My brother’s ex-fiancee, Wendy Darling, is an elementary school teacher with a free summer. The last thing I need is to get tangled in his mess, but my family thinks she’s a perfect fit for the job. Turns out, she fits in better than I could have imagined.

Wendy is nothing like I expected. She’s kind and adventurous, with a beautiful laugh that washes my worst nightmares away. She pushes past my silence and sees more of my true self than anyone has in years. And my six-year-old son is falling for her just as quickly.

Being with Wendy can never happen. Not when my younger brother is her ex-fiance. Not when she’s so close to our family. Not when our small coastal town gossips the way that it does.

But after so long in the dark, Wendy makes me feel something. Falling for her feels a lot like flying instead.

I know happy endings only belong in fairy tales, but I’m close to stealing one for myself.

OFF THE HOOK is a grumpy-sunshine, single dad romance with lots of slow burn spice! This is book one in Never Harbor, a series of interconnected stand-alone contemporary romances set in a coastal small town.

TROPES:

  • Grumpy + sunshine
  • Single dad + nanny
  • Ex-fiance’s older brother
  • Forced proximity
  • Coastal small town
  • Slow burn, open door romance

Never Harbor is my new home and Jasper my new love!

Never Harbor is my new home and Jasper my new love!
“I’m starting to believe Jasper saves his smiles for when they’ll be the most effective at melting my heart.” Oh my heart! This was such a wonderful read! Julie’s books just keep getting better and better! I have honestly loved everything by her and every single time I fall harder and harder for the characters and settings she has created. When Julie announced she would be writing a Peter Pan inspired series I was instantly sold. Peter Pan is one of my favorite Disney movies. I remember wanting to have Pixie dust and fly when I was a child. Now all I want is to settle myself in this cozy and homey town of Never Harbor that Julie has written and hang out with the crazy and oh so loving family that are the Davies. I loved all the Peter Pan parallels and references. Off the Hook follows adorable, sweet, and sunshiny Wendy Darling and serious, grumpy, but with a heart of gold Jasper Davies as they fall in love. The kicker? Jasper is Peter’s older brother, and Peter is Wendy’s ex-fiancé. Oh the angst, the pining, the sense of betrayal for wanting what’s “forbidden”. Wendy and Jasper were pure perfection. The way their relationship slowly grows was sweet torture. I love a good slow-burn. Off the Hook is also full of some excellent side characters. The Davies siblings have such a great relationship, they care and look out for each other so much and I truly enjoyed reading their crazy interactions. And Sam! Sam, Jasper’s adorable, fun-loving son - such a sweet cinnamon roll. Julie also gifted us with a reference to her Honeywood Park series which was fun to catch. If you haven’t read her Honeywood Park series I highly recommend it! I could honestly continue to gush over this book for forever, it was definitely the perfect way to start this new series and I am looking forward to the next installment. “I can feel myself already at the edge of a cliff, at the precipice of my cracked soul. Because, against my better judgment, I know what I want. I want her.” If you’re looking for a sweet, funny, and sometimes spicy Peter Pan inspired loves story, than I highly recommend Off the Hook. I promise you’ll fall in love with Never Harbor and ALL the Davies. *A huge thanks to Julie Olivia and Good Girls PR for the eARC. All thoughts are my own.*

💗Something I Loved: I was actually surprised with how much I loved the Peter Pan vibes. I truly thought I was going to have a harder time with the fairytale aspect but it was very well done without being overly cheesy and there was so much more depth to the story than I anticipated. It was in no way a direct retelling of the fairytale but I loved all the nods to Peter Pan, from the hook tattoo to Wendy’s storytelling to the thimble and Sam’s little red beanie. It was so sweet and whimsical and overall worked for me much more than I expected… I was definitely in the exact mood for this kind of book.
🫤Something I Would Have Changed: Y’all already know I hate the nickname “baby” so I guess that? But honestly it bothered me less in this book than most and was actually *at times* sort of endearing. Oh, I also must point out the numerous mentions of Jasper smelling like fish bait. Wendy was certainly into it and while I’m not yucking her yum, I did gag a little every time it was mentioned because it’s one of my least favorite smells. 🤣 #toeachtheirown
🥰Favorite Moment: I couldn’t possibly choose. Jasper and Wendy’s sailing date… when sweet six year old Sam comforts Jasper after a nightmare… any of the heartwarming moments between Jasper, Wendy, and Sam… the reconciliation… “three months later”… Whether they made me smile, laugh, or cry big fat tears, there were innumerable moments that touched me.
🌶️Spiciest Scene: Hmm probably when they are camping in chapter 33, “Yes, Captain.” Honestly though, there were a good number of spicy scenes and it was definitely steamier than I expected from a fairytale retelling so thank you Julie!
📚Standalone vs. Series: The 1st in @julieoliviaauthor’s #NeverHarbor series. Each book in the series focuses on one of the Davies siblings, with book 2, #OutWiththeTide, featuring one of Jasper’s younger brothers, Cassidy (out now), and book 3, #OnMidnightShores, following their younger sister, Bonnie (out April 17, 2025).
📖Would I Recommend: Absolutely. This book surprised me if I’m being honest. I didn’t expect to hate it or anything like that, but I also didn’t expect to be so into it, so moved by it. As a romance, it still followed the typical structure, but there was also just something MORE about it… from the found family aspect to the portrayal of grief, it was impeccably done and perfectly balanced with every lighthearted moment in between. It was so much more than I expected and I’m glad that the 2025 Reading Challenge I’m participating in forced me to finally take this one off my TBR. I didn’t know I needed a Hook and Wendy inspired romance in my life, but I guess I really did.

A bit slow at times but a good read. Sorry about a guys go secluded him self and his adopted son from everyone including his family until he needs a nanny for the summer. Enter Wendy and her stories and making him see himself for who he truly is. But it can't be a story without some dynamic , enter her ex who is his brother.

Eh... I'm in the minority here, but I thought it was pretty boring and there was no chemistry. We all love a broody guy but Jasper was just kind of mean and Wendy would fall over when he was just "nice" to her. They really didn't even seem like they liked each other. This was my first Julie Olivia book and likely my last.

This was such a SWOONY little treat! After loving Olivia's previous series, I was excited to dive into the start of something brand new. It's clear that the series is going to have some stellar small town/found family vibes, paired with a variety of off-limits relationships - starting with this first one. Falling for your brother's ex-fiancée is never a great idea, but it was easy to see all of the ways this couple was perfect for each other. The sunshine heroine brought out a lighter side of the grumpy, grieving hero, and everything between them felt so natural. I loved that their romance was a quieter one, and that they were truly getting to know each other for the first time. Though their history is a messy one, I really appreciated how it was handled. It was obvious that Wendy's ex simply wasn't the right fit, and there were no feelings between these two until the dynamic changed. I got wrapped up in the story with no trouble at all, and then I devoured it quickly. I loved it!

The story is loosely based on Peter Pan, but I found it distracting to look for all of the connections, so it was easier to enjoy it for exactly what it was. Essentially, the story follows Wendy, a sweet teacher from a small town whose ex-fiancé's family took her in as one of their own. Though Wendy and Peter ended their engagement a few years ago (he was always looking for the next adventure), the two have remained friendly. So when Peter's broody older brother, Jasper, is looking for a nanny for the summer, the family suggests Wendy fill the role. Wendy doesn't know a whole lot about Jasper - he's not an easy guy to get to know - but she's aware that he's trying to do his best as the guardian of a little boy, and he's clearly overwhelmed. As the two spend time together, it's obvious that they have a connection. Neither wants to cross lines that will tear their family apart, but staying away is easier said than done.

Some readers are wholeheartedly against brother swap romances, and I get that - but they can be pretty great sometimes, lol. In this case, Peter still had a lot of growing up to do, and I loved that Wendy knew she needed someone who would make her a priority. Jasper was up to that task right away, getting to know Wendy on a deeper level and understanding what was important to her. I loved the way she seamlessly fit into his little family unit, and the love between them progressed in the most effortless way. I've said before that forbidden relationships are often the strongest ones because they need to be worth the struggle, and that's definitely the case here as well - I never questioned that Jasper and Wendy were a perfect fit. It's a slowish burn with some moments of serious spice, and I adored how strong the emotional connection was. Jasper became a guardian when his best friends passed away, so he's doing the best for his new son but is still grappling with his own grief. There are some adorable family moments that upped the swoon-factor, as well as so many sexy ones and that underlying level of angst. It's a nuanced love story that has me very excited for more from the series, and it was definitely an enjoyable read.

This was such a cute read, I loved every minute. Peter Pan is one of my favorite childhood stories, so I’m a glutton for any version of a retelling and I can’t wait to see where this series goes.

Loved this one! The premise was so neat—inspired by Peter Pan—which meant the names of characters and places were a lot of fun. I enjoyed how familiar it felt and yet it was a completely new thing all on its own. Jasper had such a tender soul and it made me feel so good when he let Wendy in. I thought their chemistry was great, and all the quiet, sweet moments between them were so freaking swoony. And I also adored sweet little Sam. What an absolutely delightful book.

I never read Peter Pan, but of course I‘m familiar with the tale. Inspiring Toby Darling from The Inheritance (my favorite theatre character ever!!!), I was quite curious to see / read another story inspired by Peter Pan. I was not disappointed!
I read the book in two days and couldn’t lay it down. Prepare for the most heartfelt and loving story. Wendy is right, life always moves on and sometimes a little bird just needs to fly.
Thank you Julie Olivia for enriching my shelf with another great story. I tried being kind to my heart while reading, but your story shot an arrow right in the middle of it that I can’t seem to shake off in the most wonderful way!!

This has been on my TBR forever and I'm so glad I've finally read it!

I read Out With The Tide last year and it was so lovely! This one is just as sweet and beautiful, with a bonus of forbidden love and single dad + nanny!

I love Jasper! A grump who worries about doing the right thing by everyone: his adopted son, his family, and eventually, Wendy. The romance was top-tier and I was definitely rooting for Jasper and Wendy to get their happy ending!

This is the first of a series of interconnected stand-alones, with the 3rd book releasing in April 2025.

This series has such flawless vibes. It's a loose Peter Pan retelling, set in a small, coastal town with a great cast of secondary characters. The Found Family trope is great and I can't wait for each sibling's book!

    I definitely recommend!
