Design Your Own Website With WordPress 2023: The ultimate, step-by-step, beginner's guide to a full-featured WordPress website for small business, coaches, authors & bloggers Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 46 ratings

Design Your Website With WordPress 2023 is a hands-on guide to teach you skills that will not only build, but also design, a modern full-featured website for you.

This is not a textbook written by a tech geek but a guide-book written by an experienced copywriter-cum-designer with decades of experience in brand communication.

I will not only introduce you to WordPress, the popular web-building software but also to an amazing web design tool called Elementor.

This step-by-step guide is supplemented by 27 SilentMoves videos on my site to show you all the clicks and moves. Fast paced. No fluff. Easy to learn.

Who is this book for?

It is aimed at any small business or freelancer.

If you are any of the following, this book will help you design a fully functional website from scratch:

  • Consultant
  • Yoga trainer
  • Executive Coach
  • Life coach
  • Holistic medicine practitioner
  • Therapist
  • Blogger, writer or author
  • Landscaping service
  • Plumbing service
  • Dentist
  • Financial Advisor
  • Any professional who offers an online service through time slots
  • A small business owner
  • A designer or copywriter who wants to learn WordPress

What should you already know?

No prior technical knowledge is needed. There are lots of moving parts to building a site, though each one is easy in itself. Take it in tiny bits and it will all fall into place. WordPress was created for non-coders. It’s drag-and-drop all the way! And Elementor was created for non-designers. So, don’t worry if you are not a web designer. You will need a desktop or laptop, though. PC or Mac is fine. You can’t learn this stuff on a phone.

Among the things you will master from the book

  • Buy domain name and hosting for your business
  • Install WordPress at your host
  • Learn about Elementor plugin (free version) and its design capability
  • Design the About page using text and images
  • Find royalty-free images to freely use on your website
  • How to align text, choose fonts and colors
  • Numerous screenshots to guide you
  • Access to 27 SilentMoves videos on my site to show you the exact mouse clicks without distracting audio
  • Design site-wide header and footer (including logo placement)
  • How to create and stylize buttons
  • Dummy content to download and use
  • Create testimonial sections
  • Make columns for content side by side
  • Insert background and foreground images (and the difference between them)
  • Display a functional contact form for visitors to get in touch with you
  • Create a rich Home page with various sections linking to inside pages
  • Create a blog (optional) and format blog posts
  • Add both ‘Follow’ and ‘Share’ social media links
  • How to insert videos in your site to make a point
  • How to optimize images for use on the web (Hint: Hi-res images have to be compressed)
  • Enable appointments on your site and connect with an external appointments app
  • Install plugins for site safety, site speed and site backups
  • How to test your finished website for speed so it loads fast
  • And much more!

Narayan Kumar is a senior communications professional with three decades of advertising experience. He is a copywriter and designer who kept pace with the digital medium. As a director of his agency, he is well versed in web design basics and build technologies including Ruby on Rails. But his favorite weapon of choice is WordPress for all the freedom it gives him in design and flexibility. It also allows his clients and their teams to easily visit the admin section and make editorial changes at will without any coding knowledge.

Narayan currently heads his WordPress consulting venture, Blue Mountain Code. Along with his wife, he consults, builds, writes, and designs anything and everything that has to do with WordPress. He has written 'Design Your Own Website With WordPress (2023)' to help solopreneurs and freelancers, authors and bloggers, copywriters and designers learn the fundamentals of building a full-featured web site using WordPress and the theming tool Elementor.

This is his maiden book and plans to follow it up with more advanced books in the near future on how to effectively use WordPress to build websites for oneself or others.

Looks can be deceiving. This small book of 116 pages turned out to have so much information in it that almost every page I've marked up with red ink for something I want to come back to. And I create my own index to find topics later, and that index, as I have finally finished the book today, that index is 3 pages of small type. Well worth the money.

The author is very easy to understand but I grew very tired of using a 4.0 magnifying lens to see the limited black and white illustrations which were in light print.

Equilavent to attending a one to one tutorial with a superb tutor. First Class knowledge.

This book enabled me to easily understand and use WordPress. Special emphasis throughout the book on using the Elementor Page Builder plug-in which is explained clearly and without jargon.
Highly recommend this book to people with little to no experience in using WordPress. Clever use of videos demonstrate without voice how to progress through the steps in the book. In most cases I viewed the videos before attempting to go through the different areas of instruction in the book.

A MUST if you want to master the essentials of creating a website without having to go through every menu in WordPress. The author seamlessly guides you from one topic to the next ensuring you know what is important to the task at hand.
    Looking forward to volume two.

The book uses Elementor (more on that in a moment) to build the essentials of a website -- text, images, menus, social media links, blog posts, etc.. Another book I tried was more about setting up WordPress -- this book got me through the basics to perhaps a low intermediate level. What I particularly appreciated was the videos he has, which shows the "clicks" step-by-step. If you can't find say "the blue button halfway up in the column on the right" -- you can simply go to the movie and watch him do the steps.

Elementor is a plugin and this book is based on using it. It's free, and is an incredibly popular and common plugin, and after doing the book, I tried using WordPress without it -- it's far easier to use Elementor. But I think it's worth knowing this. (The other book I read used Gutenberg -- plugins are prevalent, and Elementor gets far better reviews).

I needed to create a website for my tutoring business and this book was a godsend. Went right through the process and I now have a lovely website to work with… thank you! All for a price of a cup of coffee. Can’t recommend this book enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a 'doing' book, not a 'reading' book alone
Reviewed in India on January 19, 2023
One of the first things that strikes you about Narayan's book is the easy, conversational tone. He writes about things that techies would assume people know, which is far from the case. He gets down to explaining things like buying a domain - and I know this from experience. People don't know the difference between buying a domain, a hosting package and why they need to have complete control over their website.
It may seem tiresome, but these are the building blocks of a business. He clearly tells you why you need to build your own site, rather than rely on packages like Wix and Squarespace.
If you buy the Kindle edition, you get access to a set of 'silent videos' They clarify what he explains in extensive detail in the book. So, you can try things out, knowing fully well the cause and effect of your actions.
This is not a book you read and put back on the shelf. Keep it open as you do everything from buying the domain to setting up the hosting service to getting into the 'dashboard' and understanding each of the functions.
I wondered at first why he suggested building a mock site with the content he has already provided. That helps to understand what goes where. And once you know what should be typed in where, you can begin experimenting with the possibilities.
There will be terms you don't understand right away but persist. Like an infant's gibberish leads to coherent speech, you will find that a whole website comes into being - and you've done it.
Set aside about an hour every day. As you begin to get the gist and things make sense, you will move faster and spend more time.
Until Ikea made the do it yourself chairs and tables, people didn't think they could. But once they did, the furniture acquired a whole new meaning.
Immerse yourself in the book - buy both, the online and the hard copy. This is book written by someone who has dived deep into it, Narayan isn't a techie instructing you. He's a friend asking you to take the plunge. And if you do go wrong occasionally, he's sitting behind you with an understanding smile and encouraging you to stick with it.
Because the rewards are truly worth it.

Initially useful but it's out of date and there are easier courses. And more up to date versions of wordpress without having to download extra software like Elementor. I recommend udemy.
