Grounds for Impropriety (Hawthorne Hall Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 209 ratings

How could a lady - so enamored by the elegance of the Elizabethan era - be falling for the poster boy of irritating irreverence and impropriety?

Avi Hawthorne is living proof that beauty and kindness don’t always equate to brimming confidence. With a traumatic past that has stolen her voice, smile, and adventurous spirit, Avi’s hindered present does not bode well for a bright and happy future. The only silver lining in her lackluster existence is her failing bookstore. There, through a seemingly infinite number of pages, Avi makes her daily escape to different worlds and times –far better suited for her timid, old soul than the ones she was born into. But all that is about to change…

With the help of her siblings and grandmother's will, Avi begins the adventure of a lifetime, bringing her favorite novels to life by purchasing Hawthorne Hall – a 17th century English estate – and turning it into an all-immersive, Regency-themed retreat for the quirkiest lineup of paying customers. It’s just too bad the most annoyingly handsome guest seems determined to sabotage the experience, make a mockery of everything she enjoys...and audaciously conquer her guarded heart.

Grounds for Impropriety is an opposites-attract, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, slow-burn, closed-door, contemporary, regency, seemingly difficult-to-label, romantic comedy.

This book contains zero swear words, light Christian aspects, and memories of traumatic events.

Fun escape for avid readers

Fun escape for avid readers
When I told my husband the premise of Grounds for Impropriety, he said, “Sounds familiar.” Avi is ME- the introverted escape reader who would use her surprise inheritance to buy a castle in England to start an immersive historical b&b. Except unlike me, Avi actually did it! This story takes you on her adventure from living in a place of fear to making bold steps toward achieving her dreams- and maybe an unexpected hunk steals her heart along the way. The romance is very sweet, the personality-filled characters jump off the page, and the dreamy Hawthorne Hall is a character all on its own!

I love that you really don't know who the MMC is going to be right away! I thought it would bug me not knowing. But I loved wondering if it was going to be the Hollywood Actor, the quirky Millionaire, the broody Scottish guy, or the outgoing Relator.

I loved that all the characters from the main ones to the side ones have their own personalities! But two of my favorites outside the FMC and MMC are best guy friends who banter like Shawn and Gus from Pysch. They had me laughing all the time with their antics.

I love that the FMC is unknowingly on the autism spectrum. Who truly is okay spending her life hiding in her bookstore. But then her grandmother passes away and gives her a way to go on an adventure by leaving her some things in the will.

I love that the FMC has an amazingly supportive family who all have experienced trauma but have bonded through it. Parker Roberts gave Avi an amazing brother who is her advocate and would do anything for her. He's a man who I wished my own brother would have become.

Parker Roberts just weaves the perfect slow burn romance full of light hearted banter, deep heartfelt moments and of course the perfect sweet kisses!

The author, Parker Roberts, wrote this book for his wife. It’s filled with her favorite tropes. How sweet is that?

And that’s what drew me to this book the most, so I decided to pick it up. And I’m glad that I did, because I enjoyed it and think that Parker is a good writer.

There were a few things that kept me from truly loving this, however. The setup for the romance isn’t one of my favorites as one of the characters ends a 2+ year relationship and then immediately starts something with a new person. That is never my favorite beginning to read or watch. I also wasn’t really sure why the main character, Avi, liked Dane either. There wasn’t much of a buildup.

The other main drawback was the use of a Scottish brogue in writing. All dialogue from two Scottish characters was written with the accent and this slowed me down. A few lines here or there, reference to the accent, and it would have worked better for me. It was done really well, it just isn’t my favorite way to read.

I did like getting so many perspectives and seeing a bigger picture in some of the scenes as we switched between different characters.

I don’t know if he plans to release more books, but I think that the author shows promise and I would definitely pick up another book by him.

The fact that Parker Roberts wrote this for and because of his sweet wife is pretty UNconventionally romantic, it goes above and beyond!
There are a few things I enjoyed about this book. I liked that even though the jealousy of the women was hilariously dramatized, it didn’t make either woman into a terrible person.
At first it seemed like Dane made a split second decision to break up with his long time girlfriend to pursue a rich lady, but the more the book progressed it seemed like he had been processing his feelings about it for a long time and finally made the decision. Anyone going through that can relate to this aspect of the story, so it made his feelings for Avi so soon after the breakup seem more plausible.
Loved all of the cultural references and all of Avis quirks! She sounds a lot like younger me.
For a minute I thought this book was going to turn into a murder mystery which also would have been fun! I liked the way it played out in the end.

I loved the author's turn of phrase! The alliteration, the unique use of words, and many other components. I loved the multiple POV. You get to read some of the story through the minor character's perspective.

This was a fun read with a likeable cast of characters, and a good balance of humor and heart. Avi needs to come out of her shell and experience life, take chances, and embrace the real world outside of books. What better way to do than than spend her inheritance on a mansion in England and create a Victorian era-inspired resort for people to come pretend to be something they're not! This concept was fun, and I love how Roberts created unique and animated characters to populate Avi's house and allow her to see herself through their eyes. The romance starts rough, but what can you expect from such a meeting? And then it takes off, giving you a wonderful sense of the misunderstood Mr. McKinnon. I'd recommend this book to adults who enjoy romcoms, Victorian era manners and a humorous look at why then isn't really better than now.

I loved this book! Roberts had me captivated from the first line to the last. It was beautifully written, with multiple POVs. Don't let that put you off; they were easy to keep track of and didn't detract from the story, as can often happen.

Avi, the FMC, reminded me of a shy bookworm, but she was so much more. With a supportive cast of family members and an unexpected blessing, she comes out of her shell. Needing to guess the MMC was a fun twist, too. The slow burn and the eventual sweet kisses were the best. And, I laughed out loud so many times, especially at the antics of the two guy best friends.

Knowing that Roberts wrote this book for his wife makes it all that much more special. I'm so glad I have my paperback so I can read it again and again.

Highly recommended! I can't wait for the next one. There will be another, right, Mr. Roberts??

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant debut!

First of all, I love how Parker wrote this book for his wife Rachel (@closeddoorromance) encompassing her favourite romance elements, I mean major husband points! And what a brilliant debut!

Parker definitely has skills in the writing department, I love his style. This is a really fun story, a slow-burn closed door romance, with the added regency glamour. Avi is such a loveable character, I love her! I was rooting for her so much and loved the family element of this book.

If you love enemies to lovers, forced proximity, opposites attract and a bit of regency thrown in, you will love this!
