4.7 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

The Banished have made their move... Now Haltveldt answers back.

Reeling from the events at Solitude, Calene Alpenwood embarks on a journey to find meaning in all she's seen, and to discover the answers she so desperately seeks. Finding herself more alone than ever, Calene is trapped between doing what's right, and doing what needs to be done.

Meanwhile, Kade Besem continues to search for his son, Arlo, and the strange warrior-monk, Tilo. His hunt takes him deep into Banished territory and into the jaws of danger.

Not content with driving the elves from the face of the continent, Master Of War Nexes Almor sets his vicious sights on the Banished threat... But the Emperor's new weapon, the Shadow Sparkers, pushes the limits of the fragile control of his sanity as he seeks to write his name across the history books.

Revelations are uncovered, ancient secrets are revealed and those who stand in the Empire's way can't hope to win when Haltveldt walks the Path of War.

The Empire Of Ruin saga continues in this British Fantasy Award-nominated novel perfect for fans of '
The Wheel Of Time', 'The Witcher', and 'Lord Of The Rings'.

David Green is a neurodivergent, internationally best-selling writer of the epic and the urban, the fantastical and the mysterious.

With his character-driven dark fantasy series Empire Of Ruin, or urban fantasy noir Hell In Haven starring Haven's only supernatural PI Nick Holleran, David takes readers on emotional, character-driven, action-packed thrill rides that leaves a reader needing their next fix.

Hailing from the north-west of England, David now lives in County Galway on the west coast of Ireland with his wife and train-obsessed son.

When not writing, David can be found wondering why he chooses to live in, and write about, places where it constantly rains.

Into the depths of Haltveldt we stride, into a darkness unrivaled.
Into a realm where hope alights through haunted manses and caverns imperiled.
Love which shines its myriad forms, through the eyes of a parent, a partner, a friend.
    A world of injustice…
    …a war without end.

~A Path of War inspired review poem.

The heart, action, and depth that began in Solitude’s Shadow, gains in strength and momentum within Path of War. Answers are given and more questions posed in the most satisfying of ways. And as dark as dealing with war and Shadow Sparkers can get, there are many moments of well-timed levity throughout. Green strikes a perfect balance in this regard.

The prose, pacing, character development, and world-building are all excellent and served to draw me further into this complex, living, breathing Empire. Everyone gets even more layers added to their development and it all weaves together with seamless care and emotion.

The ending brings twist after twist, each well-earned and setting up the sequel while ensuring PoW is a whole and complete tale unto itself.

    A powerhouse sequel.

Green continues to do this series justice and you are safe within his words.

Mr. Green’s writing is quite supreme. Such texture and complexity. This new installment builds our beloved (and hated) characters so nicely and the world and magic system is palpable. EXQUISITE.

A fantastic second instalment in the series. Tensions rise as the characters are forced to face the fact their world is changing and not for the better. Fast paced despite it’s length, Path of War leaves you desperate for more

Path of War by David Green is a worthy sequel to In Solitude's Shadow!

A lot bigger than the first book, this book delivered on what I was hoping for - more depth all around. More detailed world building, more character growth, more scheming, more action, more fights and more mysteries to be resolved.

In really enjoyed how the darker bits of the book were handled. Traumatic experiences actually have repercussions, and loss isn't just forgotten two seconds later. It's a dark story that isn't for the faint of heart, and especially one POV is far beyond redemption at this part, so be warned.

I loved the strong bonds, be it friendship, love, family or the need to help even strangers. There's a lot binding people together, which definitely was a major strength of the book! I always enjoy it when there's a lot of different layers instead of just one central relationship, and Path of War has many.

Definitely a very strong series by now, and I'm already looking forward to the third book!

The scope widens. More characters, more drama. A brilliant sequel.
