    Book Review: Sacred Silenсes

    Some pure and gentle love has been presented to us in a masterpiece book ‘Sacred Silences’ written by Dr. Nina Apra. I am sure that most readers would agree with me if I say that the story includes love parts, although being more a war-centered novel. Dr. Nina’s hero, a Ukrainian named Ivanov, becomes a soldier and loses everything, for he cannot even remember the events that happened to him, whereas there is Iva, a loving nurse from Luban, Russia. Seeking refuge in the most oppressive of places - a war-torn country’s hospital - their relationship develops in the most extraordinary, yet immensely excessive, circumstances as they love each other despite the shared pain of war more and more.

    The author makes a very useful impression on the readers not only building the loving relation in the story but also trying to fight against loss as much as possible. Dr. Apra, using beautiful images - poetry, music, and even the absence of voices, tries to understand what unites people and what exceeds any wars or borders. The story feels enriched with the incorporation of the use of conventional folk songs and with the style in which the story has been written which is melodic and poetic.

    All these connected journeys depict love, suffering, and unsurmountable convolutions that characterize wars and peace. Love becomes a comfort as well as the cause of pain. The search of Ivanov’s world and self, grappling with his memories of Iva and his past, reveals both the grace of the human spirit and its fragility. It is a pity that the emotions which the author describes are not suffering emotions, but quite the reverse, and readers are left with disappointment.

    Attention to the sacred spaces filled with creativity emphasises, as the title suggests, “Sacred Silences”, is a fascinating enquiry into love in
