Pod To Pluto - The Last Day: The novel of the hit Cornucopia Radio sitcom Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

It’s Jemima’s last day at the UK Space Agency.

One more mind-numbing, automated day fixing smutalites and then she’ll be at her leaving party making a funny yet poignant speech. People will cry and tell her they’ll miss her. She’ll be showered with gifts before jumping in the car with boyfriend Graham to start a new life in Devon. It’s going to be glorious.

Unfortunately for Pod, her on-board computer, a new life for Jemima may mean his untimely death. That would be disastrous. He has a different plan; one that’s going to take them on a five-year round trip to Pluto to switch off a light.

The moon gangsters, failed marriages and monstrous trail of destruction they’ll cause along the way are just occupational hazards really.

Pod To Pluto - The Last Day is the novelisation of Cornucopia Radio’s hit sitcom by series writer Peter Richard Adams.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone who loves dry, British humour!

Pod to Pluto - The Last Day promised more of the podcast and it delivered! Like any good podcast novelization, it does not simply retell the story of the show, but also fills in a ton of gaps and expends its world. If you're not convinced whether this book is for you, listen to the first few episodes of the podcast and you'll get your answer. It isn't hard to find, Google is your friend.

There are two things I'd like to note though:

    1) The book doesn't actually retell the entire story of the podcast and thus the end feels lacking. The author might be planning to write a sequel, but in the meantime, you'll have to listen to the podcast to get any real closure. Start at episode fifteen.

    2) I read the paperback version and it was set in a sans serif font like Arial and not a serif font like Times New Roman. I was personally able to adjust, but I know others cannot. I have contacted the author and have confirmed that this is due to inexperience, this being his first self-published book. He has told me that he will consider switching to a serif font for a second edition if or when that happens. If reading 300+ page novel set in a sans serif font is unacceptable for you, you'll probably want to avoid the print version until this is fixed.

5.0 out of 5 stars British Sci-Fi comedy at its finest

Based on the first season of the excellent podcast, Pod To Pluto’s novel contains all the wonderful jokes from the show and also uses the format to expand and explore some of the side plots and secondary characters. While nominally this is an engrossing yarn about a reluctant space traveller saddled with a journey she didn’t want to take, Peter Richard Adams uses that frame work to explore the absurdities of day to day life from office bureaucracy, politics, psychiatry and even an extremely fun, final chapter on Christmas. Following the likes of Hitchhikers Guide and Red Dwarf in the fine tradition of British comedy sci-fi. Well worth a read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollicking read!

Apparently I'm now the sort of person who uses the word 'rollicking', that's the power of this book.

Somewhere in the space between Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy lies Pod to Pluto, a very British sci-fi comedy.

Many genres and films are lampooned here alongside the British attitude to life and bureaucracy (outwardly disparaging, inwardly loving) and the notion of who your friends maybe really are, or have to be when you've nothing else.

Red dwarf meets Austin powers. Loved it.
