Poisoned Leaves: A Green Witch Mystery Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 725 ratings

Find the killer. Stay under the radar. All in time for tea.

Rhianne Alkenn is thrust into the heart of a murder investigation as a consultant. But when her gargoyle employee becomes the prime suspect, the investigation becomes personal.

She’s not very good with relationships or accepting help but a growing set of quirky friends won’t take no for an answer: her cheeky incubus best friend, her wise familiar Toto, a sassy half-gargoyle lawyer and a pathologist who can tell you what she is but would then have to kill you.

As the layers of the investigation unfold, Rhianne must navigate the relationships with her ambitious witch mother, elusive elf father, and a blossoming connection with tech mage Kai.

Oh, and did she mention that her powers are not supposed to exist? Her task: solve the case, keep her powers hidden, and then return to being a regular halfling. Piece of cake, right?

In Sydney's urban jungle, this wife, mum, and hopeless romantic once herded corporate cats as a project director— a job that sharpened her skills in intrigue and (non-lethal) murder. Now she’s busy plotting the demise of fictional characters in her enchanting urban fantasies and murder mysteries. When not infusing her stories with humour, light and a touch of romance, you’ll find her attempting to ride waves and embracing the art of the wipeout, jamming tunes with her husband, or valiantly trying to restore order to the delightful chaos that is family life.

Mystery, Friendship, and Magic
This story follows Rhianne, a green witch and owner of a flower shop. Oh, and did I mention there's also a murder investigation, some hidden magic, and a budding romance? What I found most enjoyable were Rhianne's eclectic group of friends and the array of places the story led us to explore. One scene in chapter two particularly stood out to me: when Rhianne went out for tea. The author's depiction of the assorted teas, the cozy yet natural ambiance, and the elegant craftsmanship of the tea pots transported me right into the scene. It left me wanting a real-life visit to that charming tea spot.

Rhianne’s life is pretty great, she has a the very best friend a girl can have, he loves buying her clothes—I mean come on. Loyal employees and a little gig on the side that lets her play Sherlock Holmes every now and then. She’s relatable, too, has family problems and not as confident as some of us pretend to be.

It was nice to read an urban fantasy without all the violence, because there doesn’t need to be blood and sex to make it a good UF. And this proved it. If you want a Sherlock Holmes kind of feel, with some sweet romance and super supportive friends this book is perfect. She’s smart , fun and can beat her bestie on the mat at the gym. I’m about to read the second one tonight. Yay!

Rhianne Alkenn is a witch/fae halfling who runs her own lawncare business and tries to stay off of her parents' radar. She has two great gargoyle employees to help her in her business, but also occasionally consults for the police as well. Her knowledge of plants, how they help and how they can harm, makes her extremely knowledgeable. This is how she finds herself part of a murder investigation. Unfortunately, it's not the only reason she finds herself needing to know answers.

The book follows her on her murder mystery, with unexpected twists and turns, as she tries to figure out what trouble in her life is related to that, and what is instead related to those in her life. Her mother is a witch council member, her father is an elusive elf, her best friend/brother figure is a sexy incubus who runs his own club and works in secrets, her gargoyle employees have their own family troubles, her new lawyer friend is a confident and take charge gargoyle halfling, the forensics specialist is a paranormal mystery addicted to sweets, and a fellow consultant is a handsome, nerdy and talented tech mage. She certainly has her hands full!

I love all of her relationships in this. The politician mom dodging is fitting. The funny and intriguing new friends bring a wider look at the world while having fantastic banter. Her guardian/pet Toto is more than meets the eye. Nel the sexy incubus is the usual attention-grabbing character, and while I love him and want more of his story, it's really refreshing that there is ZERO chemistry between him and Rhianne. Kia on the other hand is perfect for her, though I think there will be more revealed about him at some point.

The paranormal being just another part of the world coexisting with humans is interesting, while the fae world is still separate and mostly unknown for now.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to find out more as this series progresses! At times the conversations didn't flow as steadily for me, but this is a great start to the series.
Just as an added note, this story takes place in Sydney, so there is some phrasing and spelling that is different from American English, but it didn't detract from the story for me at all.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next one. I enjoyed this blending of the supernatural with regular normal humans. I also enjoyed a heroin that wasn’t incredibly damaged at the beginning of the book. I hate that trope. I got a little bored with the banter between, at least two of the characters . There was definitely the feeling that we were setting up everybody’s rules as they move forward working together it absolutely felt like the first in the series and I can’t wait for the next one. Good job.

4.0 out of 5 stars engaging, romps along with no dull moments

I enjoyed this - our heroine has some good friends behind her, this world has supernaturals and humans sharing openly, she enjoys her food, so don’t read this if you’re planning on not eating much!
There’s a murder, a mystery, and some sleuthing, and some maybe connected, maybe not other incidents that are mostly resolved at the end. A chance encounter leads to a nicely developed romance that doesn’t take over the story, and there are no explicit moments. Heroine an interesting supernatural hybrid who clearly has more skills and abilities to come, her supporting act include an incubus, a Tech Mage, some gargoyles and the “dog”, who’s very much not a dog!
Rattles along, no heavy swearing I can recall, no sex, a bit of violence but nothing gratuitous - worth the read.
