Power Play: An Age-Gap, Brother's Best Friend Hockey Romance (The Calway Family Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Lo
He’s my brother’s best friend. He was my first real crush. He’s the NHL MVP and local sweetheart.
And he’s back in town.
I won’t lie and say that I’m not happy to see Levi Buck back around Crooked Creek. Despite the frenzy that follows him around town, it’s good to see his face. The gentle, painfully sexy man I once knew.
I was just a teen when he left, and he took a part of me—and my biggest secret—with him.
But now he’s back, and so is the reminder of the night that changed everything.
I lied to him once, and when he realizes that what he saw was real, he’ll stop at nothing to bring me justice.
But justice comes at a price.
A price I’m not willing to pay.
Levi
I replay that night in my head over and over again. Not even playing in the NHL could erase the guilt I felt. I couldn’t stay in town and relive it. So when I got drafted to play across the country, I ran as fast as I could.
But I left Lo behind.
When I took off, she was still a teenager. But now, with my professional career coming to an end, I’m back in town. And Lo is all grown up. From the looks of her life, she grew up faster than she should have had to.
And I’m the only one who knows why.
When I realize what I always suspected to be true all those years before, I lose my mind. I see red. I’m willing to risk it all. I’m ready to kill for it.
But revenge might cost her everything.
And it might cost me the one thing I suddenly can’t live without: her.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023This book has some very sensitive issues in it that could have potentially been so traumatic. T D Colbert dealt with them with grace without taking away from the gravity of the situation. For that she has earned my respect!! This is a beautiful childhood crush, brother’s best friend, finally gonna happen romance. Love the portrayal of family this book exhibits!! All around 5 star feel good read!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2023Lo has had a massive crush on her much old brother’s best friend since she was young. But since she was 18 she’s been keeping a massive secret from him- she has a daughter. She’s also been keeping a secret from everyone she knows of who the father is, and how it happened.
After a brutal concussion, Levi decides to head home to do his rehab and physical therapy. He knows he’s retiring from the NHL but needs to figure out what comes next. He realizes very quickly the secret that was kept from him. And guilt takes over, because he was there the night it happened.
I loved the way that Levi accepted and loved both Lo and Harper whole heartedly and without question. They were his girls. He would do whatever it takes to protect them.
I will say, the “daddy” talk in bed felt a little random and didn’t really fit with the character. Yeah, Levi was 11 years older and he said that he really liked the age gap they had, but the times he said it just felt weird. (And I’m a HUGE “daddy” fan, it just has to be done right.)
Since Lo’s siblings were so much older than her, they had a very different relationship. But I loved the family banter. The first pizza night after they all found out about Lo and Levi was just great to read. They razzed Levi, obviously, but none of the siblings were TOO overprotective and they all knew Lo and Levi were a perfect fit. And the siblings also took on that protection role for Lo and Harper! The two of them truly had a village surrounding them.
Can’t wait for the rest of the sibling’s books!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2023Power Play by T.D. Colbert is an age gap, single mom, best friends sister sports romance between Lo (FMC) and Levi (MMC). This also has a secret pregnancy and there are heavy themes of SA and emotional trauma throughout this book so know that going in. I love a traumance so this was all good for me.
As a character, Lo is very strong, hard-working, independent and a great mom to her daughter, Harper. I loved her relationship with her family, especially big brother Tyson. Levi seems like the stuff boyfriend dreams are made of. He is smitten with Lo, 10 years his junior, and feels very protective of her. Levi is on the brink of retirement from the NHL and also Tyson's best friend.
Together, Lo & Levi are a good couple. Their connection is clear from the start. I love that Levi can be an emotional support to Lo. She is able to be honest with him and lets him take care of her. It is interesting to note that although Lo and Levi have known each other for years, it feels like instalove to the reader. The book starts and they are instantly together. I wish we were treated to some of their past; maybe a prologue with Lo pining for Levi. It would have been nice to see them in a fun scene together in that capacity. Their union felt a little anticlimactic since it happens so early in the story.
This story is very fast-paced, but because of that some parts felt a little rushed. For example, I would have liked to see more relationship building between Levi & Harper.
I'm glad that Levi and Lo disclosed their relationship to the family rather quickly and that was not a source of over-the-top drama in the book. Tyson and their dad reacted perfectly to finding out that Lo & Levi were together and were happy for them.
I do have issue with the secret pregnancy trope, but this is a *me* thing. It's always hard for me to believe, no matter how much I try to stretch my imagination, that a group of people as close as Tyson & Levi claim to be, can really withhold such a big secret from each other. The author did a good job of explaining why Tyson kept the pregnancy from Levi which I appreciate, but it still just feels very inauthentic; however, understanding the motivation behind the secret made the secret pregnancy a little more palatable.
The spice between Lo & Levi was just okay. During their sex scenes, Levi often referred to himself as Daddy which I felt did not match his character or the vibe of their relationship at all. I understand that he is 10 years older than Lo, but there was no exploration into why the daddy kink was there so it just felt very out of place in this book
If you like emotional stories, insta love fast paced stories, I think you will like this. Power Play is categorized as a hockey romance, but honestly the hockey takes a backseat to other tropes in the book. If you removed the hockey aspect, the story still stands just fine.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2023This is the first in a new series, and this is Lola and Levi’s journey. Lola is a courageous, loving, and caring single mom to her 4-year-old little girl Harper, and Levi is her older brothers’ best friend, her first crush, and he is an NHL hockey player, who has returned home to recuperate from an injury. This is a well written action packed, emotional roller coaster, with a tad angst, secrets, family, friendships, heartbreak, undeniable chemistry, guilt, regrets, justice, trauma, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, tragic, and steamy addictive small town romance page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
