Two women bound by a deadly affliction.
Oxford, Present Day. Researcher Anna Butler is hopelessly in love with history professor Jeremy Trelawny. Forced to endure him dating other women without sparing her a second glance, Anna suffers in silence. However, while examining some 18th-century books for Jeremy's smallpox research, Anna finds a memoir with unexpected parallels to her situation.
Essex, 1766. Mercy Graham is hired as a maid to unconventional rector Sebastian Fannon. But when his handsome, arrogant friend Jasper Donne comes to stay, Mercy falls hard. A lowly pox-scarred maid isn't on Jasper's wishlist for a wife, yet she unwittingly discovers a secret that connects them on a deeper level.
As Mercy’s story with the roguish Jasper unfolds, Anna attempts to deal with her own love life. But is fake dating a friend's cousin the best solution?

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2025This book definitely pulls you in with both stories.
You feel for both main ladies.
The end wasn't quite what I expected, but definitely in good unexpected ways . There was happy endings for both , suffice it to say.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2024I teetered over what star rating to give this because the writing was very good, but the subject matter was distressing. Not just the stuff about Smallpox, but the relationship stuff too. (There was one situation in particular that was both disgusting and humorous at the same time.) I will admit that I was frustrated with both Mercy and Anna. They weren't my favorite people...but then again, they were both young characters, so their behavior is realistic. But I was screaming at my ereader, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" more than once. Both timelines have happy endings, and there are laughs sprinkled throughout.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2024Pox was a quick read. I enjoyed it but was hoping for more. I found the main character, Anna, a bit childish and immature but also funny and I was interested in seeing what was going to happen with her. I liked Mercy's story much better and loved the way it ended. If you like light romance with quirky characters and a bit of history, give Pox a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024I love the way the author intertwined the two stories that you followed through the book. I love being entertained and learning at the same time. The authors ability to dictate in a way that allowed for vivid imagery was impeccable. I would love to see another book that pucks up where this one left off or written in a similar style.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024This is the first book I've read from Angela Pearse and I enjoyed it. Anna is a present day researcher at Oxford who finds a book written by Mercy in the 18th century. Chapters alternate between Anna's and Mercy's story and are written in first person. I liked almost all the characters and the plot moves along. I'll definitely be checking out other books by this author.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2024I enjoyed this novel so much! I loved the way Ms. Pearse inter wove the stories of Anna and Mercy. She connected them across three centuries through the smallpox epidemic and relationship woes. Also, the art therapy scene was hilarious! This was my first novel by this author, but not my last! Highly recommended!!

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting dual-timeline story about love vs obsession
I enjoyed Angela Pearse's dual timeline story about Mercy and Anna, two women separated by centuries, but joined by their terrible taste in men. We first meet Anna, who is a research assistant to Jeremy. As someone whose last boyfriend betrayed her with her own twin sister, Anna is afraid of love, so she chooses a man who she subconsciously thinks is so far out of her league that it will never happen. But then when it DOES happen, she realises beauty is only skin deep.
Similarly, Mercy is a housemaid who has survived the dreaded pox. It's affected her own appearance so badly that she starts to value looks above all other attributes and therefore falls for a gorgeous, but personality-stunted man named Jasper. She learns the same lesson as Anna.
In both cases, I think the women mistake love for obsession, but they both eventually look beyond that. I also have to point out that Anna has a very interesting first date that made me yell, 'He did what?!' and made me wonder about sterilisation practices when it comes to sex toys.
Pick up POX if you're looking for a fun, quick read with a historical flavour.

4.0 out of 5 stars A combination of contemporary and historical
This is a refreshing break from blissful historical romances as it deals with a lot more of what we would understand to be realistic. It is a tale of empowerment and is a complete happy ever after story, or maybe I should say tales.I
Enjoyable read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Contagious dual timeline romance
I was absorbed in this story over the time I read - often keeping me up late at night! The writing pulled me in and before long I was deep into both storylines (Anna in present day Oxford and Mercy in 1700s Essex). I'd coincidentally just been on holiday to a little hamlet near Chelmsford, Essex and visited Oxford, so this was especially delightful. There's no need for the reader to know much about the setting or the pox because the immersive writing from the author will take you right there. A book with the pox at its heart sounds sad and there is a great deal of unrequited love that binds both women, but there are chuckles galore as well. POX by Angela Pearse does an almost impossible task - merges both romcom and historical fiction and makes reading it a delight. What a perfectly formed book! Can't wait to read more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some history with a great story line
Loved this book. The way it was written kept you intrigued and I didn’t want to out it down. Felt the characters development and loved the ending. Trying more of Ms Pearse authored books now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A light frothy novel covering different time limes.
An enjoyable novel to read on a break from what ever you may be doing, but be aware you’ll keep turning the pages late into the night and work will be forgotten. Showing love stories over the ages parallel each other and how we feel can mirror the past in surprising ways
