Without an academic endorsement to make him valuable to the high fey, Saffron will be sent back through the veil to the human world. The place he was traded from as a changeling-baby, and a place he is terrified of. And while getting an endorsement shouldn't be impossible, it's hindered by the fact his literacy is self-taught, using books stolen off of Morrígan Academy's campus of high fey students.

When mistaken identity leads to Saffron learning the true name of brooding, self-centered, high fey Prince Cylvan, what begins as a risk of losing his life (or his tongue) becomes an opportunity to earn the future he wants. In exchange for an endorsement, he and Cylvan form a geis where Saffron agrees to find a spell to strip power from Cylvan's true name. While Prince Cylvan doesn't know Saffron can barely read, Saffron is determined to meet his end of the deal in order to remain in Alfidel—or, maybe, just to remain by Cylvan's side, as affections grow stronger every night they spend alone in the library together.

But as other human servants soon fall victim to a beast known only as “the wolf”, Saffron realizes he has embroiled himself in a manipulative reach for power like he never anticipated—and even Prince Cylvan cannot be trusted. Between the wolf, uncovering forbidden magic, and his growing feelings for the prince, Saffron will have to decide which is most important to him—his endorsement, the lives of his friends, or the prince’s life and wellbeing.

Amusing Relationship Dynamic
This book was honestly not what I expected. It is definitely slow burn but in a good way! There relationship dynamic is definitely the prize here and what I enjoyed most. Also love there banter. Make sure to read Trigger Warnings for the book! If you are ok with the ones listed then I would totally give it a go!

This book was amazing! I loved it, I loved the characters, I loved the story, I loved the world building, I loved the plot, and I loved everything about this book. This book is a high fantasy, romance type novel about a fairy Prince and a human who end up in a deal together about trying to find a way to remove the power behind the Prince's true name. This novel had drama and suspense and foreshadowing and really good character building. This book talked about certain dark tropes, and it discussed Royal politics, which I wasn't expecting. I can't really explain how much I love this book and how excited I am for the next installment in the series. This book was really good
It is definitely a 5 star read for me and it's probably one of the best queer books that I have read in a long time. Normally when I read queer books they're usually written by cis female authors who just don't understand the complexities of queer relationships or of being queer in general. However, this book was written by a queer author who understands queer relationships and queer experiences, and understands the in's and out's of everything. I can't really say much more it's just a really good book. I really really can't wait for the next book to come out! I'm super excited for it! I can't wait for more. I really want more to the series. I feel like the length of this book was the perfect length for it to really set up the world, set up the plot, and set everything up with the romance and the story perfectly. It got me set up and ready for the next book, and I can't wait to see where the story goes. I can't wait to see the development of these characters and their relationship and I really really hope it doesn't end in a tragedy. I don't want these 2 characters to be sad. I want them to be happy. I want them to end up together and in a happy relationship. My favorite character deserves the whole world and right now he is not being treated as he should. I'm very sad about it and I need to know what's going to happen to Cylvan. I just need to know whats going to happen to him because when we first saw him in the book he was super confident and happy and curious and like yeah he was a brat but like he was a fun brat. But, by the end of the book we start to see how his relationship with his fiancé starts to weigh on him, and we start to see the cracks in their relationship and how toxic and abusive it is. We start to see the effects on Cylvan's super confident and sometimes even arrogant character, and we see by the end of the book him completely broken down. I hope we get to see him heal throughout the rest of the story. All in all, this book is a 5 star read for me. I highly recommend it, and I will definitely be following this series for more~

Also the content warning at the beginning of the book was a very nice touch and I really think more books should start implementing that~

I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. I clearly enjoyed it, often finding myself reading it for hours at a time, continuously returning to it to read more. Yet ... I don't know how much I really cared about what was going on in the book itself.

I loved the developing relationship between Saffron and Cylvan and I feel like that relationship was really the star of the story. Honestly, the characters themselves were really the star. I know there was a plot of some sort, but I feel like it was the characters who pushed it forward. I do wish we got more development and screen time from characters other than Cylvan and Saffron, but this is only the first book in a series and I feel it was focused on laying the groundwork of the main relationship and the world.

As for the worldbuilding ... it's pretty basic for a dark faerie tale. There are Fae, there are humans, the Fae are cruel to the humans because why not, it's about what I expected. I am definitely interested in the different types of magic, and I look forward to reading the future books and seeing how it's fleshed out. I appreciated the queernorm world as well. A pet peeve of mine will always be when people write fantasy worlds and still stick to the gender binary and heteronormative society, it just doesn't make any sense.

The book ended with a bit of a cliffhanger, not enough of one that I'm itching to pick up book two and continue the story, but enough of one that the thought is certainly lingering. I feel this is a promising series, that there's a lot of room for the author to explore the world and characters, and I will definitely be checking out the future books.

I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this and.. my friends.. you are not ready.

Okay, let's start this off with: I'm not a huge fan of school settings. I don't like boarding/magic schools. It's just not my thing.

    I. Freaking. Loved. This. Book.

Yes, it's a school. Yes, it has all those things I usually can't stand and I ATE IT UP LIKE THE MOST DELECTABLE DESSERT. Saffron is the sweetest, most earnest, best person on the planet and I would protect him with my life. Cylvan is.. such a jerk and has a chip on his shoulder the size of a planet and I LOVE HIM AND WOULD PROTECT HIM WITH MY LIFE. Their dynamic is so skewed and unfair and complicated and messy and watching it evolve was delicious torture. The community surrounding Saffron is complex and I adore it. They're close-knit because of their ties in being human but also, gosh, humans kind of suck and people do strange things when they're scared. It was so real and intense and.. listen. Baba is amazing and deserves a freaking medal for all she does.

I laughed. I got teary eyed. I gasped. I don't know how to survive until book two comes out. This story was so good. I was never bored and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. The ending has destroyed me and all I can say is: Thank you, Kellen, please take both my soul and my money.

I adored every letter, word, sentence, and paragraph of this book. The world around the main characters is just so captivating and beautiful, as is Saffron and his high fey prince. The main characters are shaped and molded with amazing intricate detail, as are the characters around them, that they all just come to life with every page turn. The author handles the love, the tragedies, the imperfections, the betrayals, the friendships, and the misfortunes of Saffron, Cylvan, and all those around them in a magnificent way. I had an unforgettable experience with the world and characters of this book, and will forever be hooked to any and all the volumes to come in the future.

I couldn't imagine that with a cover so stunning, the story behind the two characters could be even more captivating. It's got all of my favourite flavours: dark academia, incredible fantasy world building, slow burn romance full of angst and bitter sweet moments, and surreal writing style which makes this book a true gem.

3.0 out of 5 stars A promising but flawed first book.
Reviewed in Italy on November 20, 2024
The book didn't capture me at first, the setting was very interesting, dark and well thought out (finally a proper use of fae lore) but at the same time I didn't vibe with the characters that much, they felt flat (we need more Letty and Nimue though, love them). Then, at around 40% something clicked and I breezed through the book, by the end I enjoyed the story enough to wanting to keep reading the next instalments of the series.
So: weak start, good payoff. In fact, I initially found the beginning premise, the whole geis thing for example, to be kinda dumb, a weak reasoning by both parties, but this logical flaw made more sense later after certain proper reveals. Saffron is just kinda slow sometimes, let's be honest. Or even a bit too trusting.
I really liked the implications of Saffron obsession with the library, how knowledge can be controlled by the strong to keep the oppressed at bay. Especially considering here the humans are basically slaves to the Fey overlords. It was brutal.
I would also argue that some story beats felt like they were skipped over, not properly developed compared to others. One good example is the relationship progression between our protagonists: suddenly they actually liked and tolerated each other, after a very antagonistic start, just like that they were suddenly overly in love with each other, the attraction was there already though. It felt forced more than natural, even after chapter 21, like, they didn't even pass that much time together to get genuinely close; or even how, at around 40%, Cylvan felt completely like a different character, the cruel prince from the first chapters was gone, and now he is both very nice and understanding? Not like the others? For a few chapters I thought there was a twin he swapped with, or that he genuinely was playing Saffron (spoiler: at that point, not really anymore, but you know, easy excuse for angst when one person doesn't comes clean early on) like he obviously was doing until that point. And sure, clearly a facade to appear strong, but come on, by the end he felt more passive than even Saffron, your typical victimised naive human protagonist but male! Also, a Cylvan POV would have helped greatly.
That said, Prince of the Sorrows was an intriguing but not amazing first book. Am I gonna start reading the sequel? Yeah, sure I will, the series has clear potential, the foundations are there, and it's also indie so I'm more forgiving (especially in regards of readability, I had to go over a few sentences again a few too many times), and the hook is interesting enough and I do own the rest anyway on kindle!

I’m so soooooo happy I pushed through this book… and the fact that at the beginning I was struggling with it ,wasn’t the book fault but my own!

This was so beautiful, incredible read and exactly what I needed. It’s so visual and it call to all senses to read this. I felt, smelled, tasted, saw and heard this book!

The story is so rich as wild fruits,Saffron and Cylvan are adorable and omg I just can’t even process anything right now. It’s intriguing, anguishing, so mysterious and thrilling, complex and romantic…

I totally recommend this book to anyone who adores Fae, who loves their deceit as well as their beauty!

the Night .. what a chapter. And it prove to me that you don’t need total smut to make it sexy and exciting… their connection was everything we need. Ok, there’s some sexy moans envolved and some oil, but damn 🔥🔥🔥🔥

And off course our sassy púca! Anything for him, so selfless and caring that the fact that it ended as it did does things To my poor heart 💜
