Particular Intentions Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 821 ratings

Who is this Mr. Darcy and what are his intentions? Like much of Meryton, the Bennets of Longbourn anticipate the arrival of Mr. Bingley and his friends to Netherfield, yet an unexpected visitor is not a part of Mr. Bingley’s or Mr. Darcy’s plans. While the two gentlemen attempt to control their uninvited guest, Elizabeth Bennet arrives to tend to her ill sister. An overheard conversation, the intriguing behaviour of Mr. Darcy, and Miss Bingley’s cloying manner all fascinate her, but manage to throw her emotions into turmoil as well. As Elizabeth becomes better acquainted with Mr. Darcy, his world unfolds and, if possible, it is more complicated than the man himself! Mysterious strangers and seducers lurk in the shadows—enough to threaten anyone’s equanimity. Elizabeth’s courage will be tested as she not only struggles to discover her own heart, but also why danger seems to surround Mr. Darcy.

Review

Mrs. Diamond's story also navigates that tender balance between writing a JAFF story filled with romance and one filled with angst. She skillfully includes some lovely moments of romantic tension where Darcy and Elizabeth reveal themselves and share themselves with one another, both emotionally and physically. - Just Jane 1813
I love the plausible premises Ms. Diamond dreams up, how she isn'tafraid to make some creative alterations with Jane Austen's characters, and her wonderfully romantic portrayals of Mr. Darcy!! I cannot wait tosee what she writes next! - Austenesque Reviews
I had to know what happened next! From the exquisite cover to the final "Welcome to Pemberley, my love," it is a most enjoyable read. - Every Savage Can Dance

L. L. Diamond is more commonly known as Leslie to her friends, and Mom to her three kids. A native of Louisiana, she has followed her Air Force husband to duty stations including: Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, England, Missouri, and Maryland.

Aside from mother and writer, Leslie considers herself a perpetual student. She has degrees in biology and studio art but will devour any subject of interest simply for the knowledge. As an artist, her concentration is in graphic design, but watercolor is her medium of choice with one of her watercolors featured on the cover of her second book, A Matter of Chance. She has multiple certifications in fitness and coaching swimming. When she’s not writing, she is Head Age Group coach of her swim team. She also plays flute and piano, but much like Elizabeth Bennet, she is always in need of practice!

Ms. Diamond never disappoints and this book is no exception. I love the twists and turns that are nicely woven into her stories of the beloved characters of Austen's P&P. This is not a recounting of the original, but indeed an original in itself. Elizabeth and Darcy do have their serious misunderstandings and tempers do flare. But eventually the calm comes and with it reason and forgiveness. Adventure and intrigue are peppered through the book as the main characters work to discover their enemies. (I don't like spoilers...so that is all I shall say). The book is very well written, the characters are lively and loving. The Bennet family is pretty much as canon presents them and the Fitzwilliam/Darcy families take them like they do Lady Catherine...with a nod and a shrug of the shoulder. What can you do. There are surprises in several places that will really please most readers that are looking for a bit of a different story than the original P&P. I highly recommend the book to all readers. Ms. Diamond has done her job well. Enjoy

I rather enjoyed this, though I will agree with some other reviewers that it felt almost like two different books. In the first part we are in Meryton where we have the assembly and Darcy's "tolerable" line, the week at Netherfield, and the Netherfield ball. However, it was done in a way which I did not feel I was reading every other JAFF I've ever read. I thought the twist with Caroline was creative and liked Darcy standing up to her vitriol. However, their falling in love seemed a little rushed when we just get a brief (paraprasing) "they walked together every morning."

At the NF ball, E overhears D telling Bingley he can't pursue Jane and must return to London. This twist was so creative and refreshing. I was kind of stupefied when I thought back over it and realized that there had been no mention of B paying any overt attention to Jane. I thought this was excellent writing. Anyway, E refuses to allow D to explain what she overheard. This part kind of bugged me cuz D could easily have just blurted out, in very few words, why he spoke as he did and avoided the argument. Of course, this might have made for a rather dull tale. But it still bugged me.

This is where the book seemed to split into a second book. E goes to London where she is reconciled w D and they become engaged. D is being followed and seeks to learn who is threatening harm to him and those he loves. We get a lot of D&E together time which was great, except they become as two wildly hormonal teenagers who can't keep their hands off one another. It was, at first, romantic and sweet but soon grew kind of boring reading about their constant make out sessions followed by a scolding from their elder relations.

I think my only real complaint about this book was Georgiana. Her experience w Wickham was far more dramatic than in canon, and G is left a broken shell terrified of stepping foot out of doors. I did not get the point of escalating that point of the story. However, I have not read the sequel, so perhaps it will make more sense then. Oh! And I was most displeased when E SWOONED on the street in London! Elizabeth Bennet does not swoon! That irked me greatly.

Overall, a good book that I would very much recommend. I have read some of LL Diamonds other works and this is probably my favorite.

I really enjoyed this story. I like variations where they fall in love early in the story, and then face various problems and obstacles together.

I deducted half a star because it was insupportable for Elizabeth to refuse to allow Darcy to explain why he told Bingley to leave Jane. Elizabeth behaved stupidly, and Darcy was too forgiving. He had a very good reason to say what he did to Bingley, and it had nothing to do with Jane or Elizabeth or any of the Bennets. I can’t say more without revealing a plot twist.

Another weakness was an over-reliance on characters learning things through extensive eavesdropping. It was overdone.

Despite these small flaws, the love story was very nice, and Elizabeth recognizes her mistakes and worked to improve her temper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow plot — the author’s other books are much better
Reviewed in Canada on June 10, 2023
I really like many of the author’s books, but this is the worst. When I got to 60%, I was already done and skipped a lot of the rest.

There wasn’t a climax in this book. There were 3 points of interest, but all were quite simple and didn’t have enough reasoning.

Elizabeth was so insecure throughout the whole book, even when they were arriving in Pemberley at the very end. Her grudge when the first misunderstanding happened was also way too forced.

Darcy’s reluctance to take action against Wickham even after the despicable thing he did to Georgiana was confusing. Besides, W’s end was quite pathetic.

The shooting scene had no point. It just created gossip. There was no reason for it, and no point afterwards.

Also, how was Darcy able to pick Elizabeth up after the shooting when that same morning, his shoulder was still hurting him so?

I understand that this is a very old story, and I appreciate that the author has written more and better stories. Her other books’ plots are much more interesting and complex.

I already read this story in a fanfiction website, but I bought it to show my support to the author. I really like stories by L.L. Diamond, being in the very good plot, the suspens created or the beautiful conversations and explorations of the characters.
    Thank you !

Another great book from Leslie. Elizabeth starts to like Darcy while overhearing a conversation at Netherfield during her stay there. Charles is a lot more assertive in this book and deals with Caroline as she deserves. Although she does attempt to cause trouble as usual. Unfortunately Elizabeth overheads another conversation which gives her a false impression of Darcy and it takes them a while to sort it out. Without giving too much of the storyline away some people do try to come between them but they face problems together. Altogether a lovely book which I couldn't put down.

I'm not particulary happy about this story. Darcy is fine but Elisabeth is too anxious and too much influenced by her mother's opinions. It is a real variation from the original Austen's Pride and Predjudice, with a bad Wickham, a new danger lurking around, new matches for Bingley and Jane but I'm not satisfied. I've enjoyed more "An unwavaring trust", another story of the same author.
