The Queen of Bones Kindle Edition
Two years after the advent of the deadly solar storms known as sunthrobs, civilization is in a shambles. Most animal species are extinct. The few people who survived have formed roving bands of sun-scorched degenerates who scour the land for scarce
provisions. The periodic sunthrobs continue to take their deadly toll. Survival is a day to day struggle.
Sara Hill and two other teenagers are driven from their fallout shelter home. They head west, hoping to find asylum in a rumored Seattle colony that is
striving to re-establish civilization. If caught by the
marauding bands, they will be robbed, the two girls raped, and all of them most likely killed. Sara brings her discovery of how to survive the sunthrobs with her. But will she herself survive the horrors of the road? Does the fabled Seattle colony even exist? Either way, there is no turning back.
“One of the most unique post-apocalyptic books I’ve ever read. From beginning to end, I was completely hooked!” – Veronica Smith, Author of Chalk Outline.
“I love Sara! The tension is wound so tight. Great story!” – Edward Kenyon, Author

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2018I admit that I had reservations when I began reading this story. It falls within one of horror’s sub-genres that, in my opinion, has been “done to death.” To grab and hold my attention, the story would have to offer me something new and unusual.
And Author Gregg Zimmerman delivered all that and much more. Filled with a cast of characters with more depth than some real people I’ve known, this story quickly grabbed my interest, and I simply could not put it down. The plot is supremely simple—survival at all costs in a hostile world devastated by a freak natural event that is still occurring at regular intervals. The pacing is perfect, the narrative never lags and is always engrossing. I found myself drawn inexorably to the incredible Sara, a blue-eyed and blonde young woman with a debilitating handicap. On the surface she seems destined to fall victim to either the calamity that has destroyed the world as she knew it or murdered by those wretched souls who have survived by only their most feral of instincts. Yet the sassy and beautiful Sara is no ordinary young woman; she has a unique ability, one that makes her perhaps the most valuable person left to humanity. The story takes her on a long and treacherous road as she searches for other survivors she has heard about, who might welcome her among their numbers, and with whom she might share her amazing gift.
A brilliantly conceived story and a satisfying read to the final page. 5-stars and highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2016actually this is a 4.5 star review but alas cant do half stars .
What do you do when you are among the last living people on the planet . You survive any way you can. Meet Sara Hill living in the wasteland called earth . After a solar storm basically wipes every human being off the face of the earth. Sara and her two friends start out to find the colony in Seattle if the colony even exists . The thing that is saving them is Sara's rheumatoid arthritis and there breathing poles . Sara has lost so much and is trying to get everything back that she once had . Along the way she meets enemies and enemies that turn out to be her friends and greatest allies. Will she survive the sun throbs and the people, to help all of man kind
This is such a different twist on the end of the world and the apocalypse. And actually kind of creepy in a way also because you actually hear of solar flares and that in the news . So when you are reading along you start to think that wow maybe it could really happen. Or maybe its just me and my paranoid mind. The author writes of a vast wasteland that is scorched and dead , nothing can survive the extreme heat and staying alive is a daily struggle,
The main character in the book Sara is one strong seventeen year old girl. Who sometime you just want to slap because of the way she acts , until you remember she is only seventeen and that's how seventeen year olds act . There are moments that you feel sorry for her and what she has to go through because of her arthritis . It just makes things so much worse for her . She is a survivor and you see her grow up along her journeys . She takes a lot of crap but also dishes it out too . She is willing to do anything to stay alive even using her sexuality to help her survive. She is the type of character that one moment you want to hug her and the next you want to slap her . Which is the type of character I kind of like . The cast of characters that she meets along the way are very diverse . From the degenerates to the men from the seattle colony. The all teach Sara a way to survive and she teaches them a thing or two also.
I truly enjoyed this book , the author took us on a fast paced roller coaster ride full of twists and turns. This take on the apocalypse is new and exciting to me . Its honestly nature made and actually has a way of happening . There aren't any zombies running around there is a bigger danger then zombies in the book . It is man and what he will do to survive anything.
Over all I really enjoyed the book but I did find the first part to be a bit boring but once you get past the first 4 chapters the book really picks up and takes you on a fast paced ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat . You will be cheering for Sara and also wanting to strangle her at the same time . You will love some characters and wish for death to others . This story will take you to edge of your seat and bring you back from the edge time after time . This is the book you want to read if you want to read about the end of the earth and the apocalypse that doesn't have zombies or was started by and out break . This is the book for you and I so can't wait to see what happens to Sara and the gang in book 2. So if you want a great book check it out QUEEN OF BONES by Greg Zimmermann
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2016I feel like I read two different books here. When I first started The Queen of Bones I immediately fell in love with Sara and was drawn into the story, unable to put it down. My first thought was “wow this is great”. I particularly loved the fact that Sara has a disability that hinders her survival, but is simultaneously the key to her survival, as well as the survival of those she meets. This is a really unique twist offered by the writer and I was eager to follow Sara’s story.
That said, about halfway through the book things change. First of all it seems as though Sara’s story is dropped. Initially she has a very clear goal. She has to get to Seattle in order to survive. She plans to share her ability and knowledge to save herself as well as the colonists there. This is her key to being accepted into the colony as well as her contribution to the world. So initially this is what it feels the story is about. Sara’s journey to Seattle and ultimately helping others survive. But all that happens about midway through the story. Then it’s like Sara has nothing to do except watch fashion shows that her boyfriend sets up for her (which seem very odd and out of place, not to mention somewhat degrading to the women serving as models), and whine about how a mystery woman is taking credit for her ideas. All through the book it’s mentioned that Sara is so intelligent, yet she’s not smart enough to put together the facts and realize that the “queen of bones” everyone talks about is her. I also don’t understand why it was necessary to keep it a secret from her in the first place.
I love Sara in the beginning. She is smart and a true survivor. She is stronger than she knows. But later on I can’t stand her. She becomes obsessed with sex (with several scenes thrown in that contribute nothing to the story or character development) and delights in her ability to manipulate men. She is also extremely superficial at times. I realize she is a teenager, but she is in her late teens and has had a huge reality check in the past couple of years since the first solar storm. It just seems unrealistic to me and makes me truly dislike her.
Once Sara meets the Mariners, her entire character changes. She goes from a character you want to follow to one who let’s herself be carried on the current of other people’s goals. She has achieved her goal to get into the Seattle colony and has given them her life-saving idea. From then it seems that the others’ goals of uniting the colonies then take over the story. She isn’t even really involved in that and it doesn’t seem to concern her much, up until her “coronation”. It was this scene in particular that completely took me out of the story. I just don’t believe that just because some girl had a good idea and a useful talent, they would just suddenly crown her their queen, with no thought to a democratic election, or even discussing it with HER. The coronation comes off as overdramatic and unbelievable.
Sara also behaves more like a spoiled little girl than a survivor or a queen. She gives the Tunnellers the snorkels without so much as speaking with anyone about it, and they just let her do it. This was one of the only advantages they had over the Tunnellers and it’s ok that she just hands it over?!
The character of Xavier is particularly inconsistent. He is at first described with words like “dictator” and “psychopath” and it’s clear he intensely hates Sara and has no respect for her. Then after a few uneventful chats between them, he does a complete turnaround and is bowing before her and proclaiming her as “supreme leader”, and proposing a fair and just government. I’m sorry but I just didn’t believe it. Again it took me right out of the story.
And finally, in the second half of the book, there is just way too much gushing over how wonderful Sara is. Every man wants to have her and every woman wants to be her. They even alter their calendar in her honor! She also seems to be the only one with any degree of intelligence as she needs to point out obvious things like the fact that metal will overheat during the sunthrobs and is the only person who seems to have ever heard of the lake effect.
I will add that the writer clearly has some talent, despite all these criticisms. His descriptions are excellent and the world he has created is interesting and fresh, and that’s something I enjoyed throughout. I am right with Sara all the way through until she meets the woman and two sons near the middle of the book. That’s when Sara began to change for me, and not for the better. I kept hoping for her to grow and change in a more positive way as the story progressed, but this, in my opinion, did not happen.
