The House on Hanging Hill Lane: Darkness Creeps Closer (The Hanging Hill Lane trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 509 ratings

Outside, a string of killings heads straight for her door. Inside, something worse is already watching.

Daphne Locke, alone, is back in her old childhood house as a sequence of brutal killings moves closer. Powerless policemen break down and cry, broken by the most horrific crimes they have ever seen.

Murders are not the only darkness on the street. Creepy neighbours watch and jerk and twitch. Pushy missionaries prophesy and stalk. Daphne wonders if she’s going mad, or if there truly is something real and insidious at play.

Perhaps the fresh grief of her mother’s death is testing her sanity. Perhaps her childhood night terrors were real. Perhaps rumours were true all along: Hanging Hill Lane is not normal. And now someone - or
something - is knocking at her door

Mysterious deaths, weird neighbors and the single girl, alone at number Two…

Mysterious deaths, weird neighbors and the single girl, alone at number Two…
In a small quaint town in the British countryside, Daphne has returned to her childhood home after the untimely death of her mother. Broken by her loss, she is left to return as was her mother’s most frequent request if something was to happen to her. Being fresh into adulthood, she is not wholly aware of what to do or how to feel. After her first night back, a family is murdered at the head of the lane - and the police cannot locate the killer. The people and occurrences in the neighborhood seem to take a sudden and frightening turn shortly after that. The police are acting weird, too. When Daphne starts to sense she truly isn’t alone, she begins to question herself and most of all, her sanity. Is this a case of mass hysteria, or is something more serious and sinister at play? I really enjoyed this debut by Baker! I am a hardcore w****e for anything that has even the slightest hint of the supernatural. There was a very direct message in the character development that I also see as very important: To not go through life being invisible. You make your life what it is. This was a very interesting take and was perfect in the novella formatting (<250 pages) The format enabled the story to take off, fly and land in a seamless fashion and didn't need any embellishments. My final thought: When do we get a sequel?! “There’s no greatest hits show at the end, just a clear picture of how one’s entire life really is.”

A teenager moves into her old childhood home on Hanging Hill Lane. Her neighbors act strangely, appearing and disappearing in a blind k of an eye staring at her, staring at number 2 of Hanging Hill. Then the brutal murders start baffling law enforcement and causing terror in the small neighborhood.

This book definitely has a creepy factor and keeps you guessing to the very end. The characters don't seem to react and respond very realistically, but even so, their frenzied actions aids in building tension and raising the hairs on the back of your neck. I wasn't as fully invested in the characters as I would have liked, but it didn't make me enjoy the story any less. The writing style is very unique, artistic even, painting a picture in the reader's head in a very different way. I definitely Italy recommend it and look forward to reading forthcoming books from Philip Baker.

A story of demons, murder, and witchcraft, House on Hanging Hill Lane follows our MC, Daphne, as she returns home from college following the unexpected death of her mother. Murders all along her quiet street begin almost immediately upon her return, and the neighborhood is at a terrified standstill. Only Daphnes secret past coupled with long standing family friends has a chance against this new evil.
Not a bad story, but a bit rushed for me, especially at the end. Three stars.

This is apparently Baker’s first book, but the writing and narrative style is definitely not the work of an amateur. Baker builds a scene and introduces us to the characters of his world in a short but effective way breathing life into the story and ratcheting up the tension with every page. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and was impressed with his style and sense of pace and the poetry of his language. The tale is creepy, violent and keeps you guessing all the way to its exciting conclusion. Well done Mr Baker and I look forward to your next terrifying tale!

From start to finish, this book was just odd. It felt all over the place and the ending was rushed. I’m going to give another book by this author a go because maybe it was just this one that I didn’t like.

This novella had potential in the beginning but fell fast. The ending felt rushed and became cheesy to me. Not at all what I expected the “creature” to be and not at all what I expected from the ending. The story lost all creepiness it had going for me. Now with me saying all of that, this was not an awful story. I feel like it needed a little more developing, even for a novella. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 star read for me.

What a wonderful debut novella! I very much wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into! I’m a fan of psychological thrillers and scary books, but the supernatural in this one took my emotions to a new level. I even had to set it down at night in order to sleep! The storyline and character development are superb and I look forward to the author writing more about this main character! There are definitely more adventures in store for her!

Loved it. It had my attention the whole time, finished it with no hesitation and it was probably not the best idea to read in the middle of the night but so worth it. Hopefully the story continues and gives us more depth with the characters that we have met until now. I'm really curious about how everything came to be.

I love the illustrations and the little illustrations on the chapter pages are really nice. I love something like that in a book. I love the cover too, very creepy. Just like how I felt when I was reading it late at night when my son was fast asleep 🫣.

The story itself is really good I was drawn to it quite quickly.

It is so so so so sooooo good! A family at number 10 Hanging Hill Lane is murdererd, then the family at number 8, then the family at number 6.

But what happens next is something completely different. Supernatural, superstition and quick witchy wit will help you survive.

My god I loved this book!

I love, love, LOVE IT!! I had gotten this on kindle but I need a copy for my bookshelf too.😍❤️

You would never think this is a first ever book, extremely well written story that builds in intensity and keeps the hair on your arms raised the whole way through.

The next book that Phil writes, I will get without even looking at the synopsis. Love it 😍
