Frenemy: Don't turn your back for one second (The Dark Hearts Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,198 ratings

I stand at the front door and meticulously check my reflection in the glass. I must look perfect to meet Lou’s new boyfriend. I haven’t been invited but best friends don't require invitations, right?

Scott's arrival coincides with Donna's, leaving me with no choice but to welcome her in, though I've made it clear she's an unnecessary addition to today's gathering. This meal is about introducing Scott to my mother and daughter – a fact Donna conveniently ignores.

As the introductions unfold, it's evident that Donna has taken a liking to Scott. Mum's quizzical expression in the kitchen speaks volumes –

Why is Donna here?

Her presence has always been a constant, demanding focus in my life. Now, however, it's evolving into something deeper, with unsettling imitations and intrusive encroachments into every aspect of my world. The struggle to create distance only seems to intensify Donna's attachment,

pulling her dangerously closer.

And by the time I realise I’ve risked everything, it’s probably too late to stop her.

Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.

Her novels are mostly set in Otley in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.

This was a great read. The ending had a twist to it, that I didn’t see coming. I felt bad for Lou, who should have severed her friendship with Donna. Donna was NOT, the model of a best friend.

PLOT: Lou and Donna had been best friends for many years. During Lou’s school years, Donna was there for Lou, during a critical time (when some girls were, beating Lou up) and Donna intervened. At that moment a friendship was forged.

Donna always wanted what Lou had and thought that, she was entitled to it…Including the men that she was involved with. After getting drunk, the real Donna comes out and it is then that, Lou realizes that their friendship has to end.

But, as always Donna has to get herself in another compromising situation and expect Lou to come to her rescue. Lou, feeling indebted to her, does it for what she believes to be the last time. Bad mistake on Lou’s behalf.

Donna is always hungry for attention and always attracts the wrong guys. She’s always going after other women men and doesn’t see anything wrong with it. She feels that…She deserves attention from these men. What will she think of what she deserves, when…Karma comes around???

Tbh this book was just odd. I give it a 3.5 stars. I kept hanging on thinking something remarkable was going to occur but (Spoiler) the main character was killed off about halfway through. Which I hated. Then you’re left with other characters telling the story. None of which was great or noteworthy. To top it off, I’ve read a lot of British author’s book but this one had such a thick accent and used only what I can assume was British slang so I was stuck trying to look words up - if it didn’t make sense in the context - to try and understand what I was reading. I’m sure I will NOT be reading another of this authors books. Otherwise the story line was readable. That’s the best I can say. I feel like a 3.5 is very generous.

I was hooked from the start..I could not put this book down. So many plot twists and turns! From the very beginning, you both love AND hate the characters. But in the end, you're onside with them all.....almost all! This is my first read with this author, I look forward to many more!

Frenemy has a disturbing plot of best friends to the end. After a murder happens, it appears everyone could be guilty but not who you think.

This book was a quick read I really read in almost one night, I only had 3 chapters left to finish today. This was a great book if you look books that relate to girls claiming to be your friend but actually are extremely jealous of you and purposely put you in situations/sabotage you. I'm looking forward to checking out another book from this author. Lots of twists just wish some things were more drawn out

I thought about giving this book four stars - or 4-1/2 if it were possible - because I didn’t like any of the characters in this story except the daughter, but she really didn’t have much of a part in this story. The main character was unbelievably naive and gullible when it came to her so-called best friend. However, the plot had quite a few twists and turns which is why I kept reading. I have to say I didn’t see the end coming. I would read another by this author in hopes that I find one character I can like.

She is not a friend!!! Donna really encroached way too much on Lou's life. I yelled at her more times than I'd like to admit.

Lou did not deserve what happened to her and I really didn't like that Maria went there. Yes this was a very toxic relationship and should never have gone on for as long as it did, but Lou I think felt obligated to Donna. I don't want to give away any spoilers here but, she should be called a user instead of a friend. Lou really did tolerate too much drama and even abuse from that girl.

But this story goes so much further than just about a toxic relationship. It's so hard to leave a review without giving anything away, but there's a lot of interaction between characters and you'll be left wondering if justice really was served in the end.
