This interstitial novella in the RALI series does a lot of character work, particularly for Xlack, and presumably sets up the character for the next full book in the series (not yet published at time of writing). The character interactions are fun, with plenty of banter, but time is also given to the more serious internal struggles Xlack, the viewpoint character for the entirety of the novella, is dealing with.
This is a fun and fairly quick read, but it does rely heavily on knowledge of the characters and events of the first book, Renegade. I would strongly recommend checking out that book first, if this novella interests you.
This series is heavy on world-building and is very intricate and detailed on that front. It can be a lot to take in, but it shouldn't be overwhelming for experienced sci-fi or fantasy readers, and that's who will love it best. I highly recommend this to readers who love a fully-fleshed-out, deep world to get lost in! The novella also includes backmatter describing aspects of the world, which is useful both for those who need clarification and those who like to dive into the extra world building.
I received a digital ARC of this book.
