I originally started watching the anime and started reading the LN after finishing the first season. Something I always liked about this series was the information you could glean from it. It was present in the anime and even more so in the LN. It brings up strategy and terminology and tactics that are applied in real life and addresses them in simpler manner. It educates while being an entertaining book and addressing moral quandaries.

Phenomenal book and I'm excited to read the rest of the series.

I'm always apprehensive going into a new series, and the beginning of this one had me groaning. It was slow to pick up and bit boring, but after I got through the prologue and the first few pages of the chapter 1, I had a change of heart. This series does take a classic isekai stance of being summoned to another world during a demon invasion, but the hero was not summoned to fight. He was summoned to make change, and while he does have a bit of magic, he mostly uses it for increased bureaucracy throughput. I like the politics and economic discussions as well as that the main character truly is a realist and not an idealist.

This series does not have a main character summoned with overpowered abilities to fight in the new world. So if you are looking for action, keep looking. What he does have is tons of smarts. He had knowledge of his world (and lots of it), and he has a fine tuned knowledge of social economics which was basically his major back on Earth. Again, I'm surprised I got so into it, but just seeing a series go so into political socioeconomic depth got me intrigued. On a side note, I think the main character (acting King Souma) could stand to be a little more formal at times (authority and respect tend to go hand in hand and are not mutually exclusive from kindness and generosity), but oh well.

Great series. Plan to continue reading.

Before being magically summoned to another world, Souma Kazuya was a college student. Now, however, Souma is king of one of the smaller nations of this other world and plans to use his knowledge of economics to strengthen his kingdom. But not everyone agrees with Souma's policies.

I quite liked Realist Hero. It's a different type of isekai. Instead of the protagonist being some super awesome person with an overpower ability that he gained upon entering the other world, Souma's expertise lies with his knowledge and his magical ability works best in administration than battle.

I also love the relationship between Souma and Liscia, the daughter of the former king and Souma's betrothed. She's not stupid. She may not understand Souma's policies at first but once he starts to explain them she is quick to see what he is doing. She's also not the standard princess. Unlike other princesses who sit around looking pretty, Liscia is introduced as an officer of her country's military. It's a nice change of pace.

I also love the bonus side story at the end of the volume. It follows one of Souma's magic-imbued dolls as it takes up a quest with some adventurers. It's cute and a nice change of pace to the main story.

However, I do have several problems with the story. The first is how quick Souma acclimates to the situation and learning to use his magical ability. It is glossed over and summarized instead of being shown.

My second problem is the pacing. The novel doesn't feel like one story but a collection of vignettes. As noted above, this works to the detriment of other parts of the story.

My third problem is the exposition. It can get over done in places, even retelling the same info shortly after giving it. In other places it doesn't give exposition on things that really should had been introduced earlier. For example, the dukes and not following Souma with the potential of civil war happening. When they were first brought up I felt like I skipped some pages. It was very jarring. There is also times where Souma will make a policy and we immediately get exposition about its future and how great it was, completely ruining any tension or potential plot points for further volumes. Remember: show, don't tell.

My final problem is the fledgling harem. I quite like the relationship between Souma and Liscia. I found it to be developing at a nice pace and doesn't feel forced. I can't say the same about the others. It really comes off as just there to fill a list than being a natural development of the story.

Overall, a nice change of pace from regular isekai stories that reads fast, but suffers from pacing and storytelling issues. It just barely edged across the line between three and four stars for me. Hopefully the Dukedom Civil War will give the series the focus that it needs, as promised by the ending of this volume. The series has potential, the author just needs to use it to its fullest.

This mc seems very believable. Some authors try to make the mc good at all things, but this mc is mostly good at history, agriculture, and some science. I actually like the fact that the mc is not skilled in fighting or all that fit nor has an unbeatable skill. Anyway the story centers around a mc summoned from another world to save a struggling kingdom full of corrupt nobles, powerful dukes, enemies on all sides, famines, and beautiful women striving for his heart. The one thing that might annoy some readers of the book are the references to brilliant tacticians, but I believe this a great addition. Every time I see the art of war or the prince, I am reminded of the strategists of centuries past. This book has monsters, demons, wars, magic and a cast of well thought out characters that leave fans wanting more.

This was a fun read. Unlike most other world series this one is lighter on the action but it has lots of fun governing and country planning. The main characters are likeable and reasonable, and I loved how the princess acted. This series is more like the anime Gate, it shows how modern thinking and knowledge applied in a fantasy world can really make a difference. Agriculture, democracy, architecture, horticulture, and so much more is used to help the people of this fantasy world, and I loved seeing how something as simple to us as cutting down on cash crops saved thousands of lives. Give this one a try, its super cheap on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent twist on the Isekai genre
Reviewed in Canada on July 13, 2020
I really like the Isekai genre overall, but it tends to get cliche. What I really like about this series is how it breaks the mold. The main character is not some overpowered superman that blows everyone away with his power. Instead, he blows everyone away with his ideas, clever thinking, and hard work. Also, as you read through the series you find that a lot of planning went into the plot. In the first book I thought the previous king was just a simpleton, but by the fourth book you learn the truth, and it is really well planned out and emotional. I started this series and got completely caught up to volume 11 in just under two weeks. I couldn't stop reading it. Now I'm just dissapointed that I have to wait months in between issues for something I'll read in a day or two lol.
