Reboot: A Cosmic Horror Kindle Edition
The sage advice IT Departments have been giving businesses since the dawn of the new technology.
Yet, it does work! If you follow this advice you may find you have something that can be used in a whole new way.
Carl Riggs is a typical IT engineer. Everything about his job annoys him, especially Gerard Medley, the CEO.
Medley is a VIP, a Very Insistent Pervert, and it’s Carl’s job to fix what he breaks. When Carl finds a strange icon hiding within the usual filth on the CEO’s laptop, against his better judgement, he clicks on it. Instantly, he is drawn down a rabbit hole, one of hideous horrors, strange perversions, and bizarre promises.
Something is coming, and Carl, aided by the unlikely ally of Gerard Medley, has been chosen to usher in the new regime.
His one job now is to turn them off and then turn them on again.
It’s what he’s best at.
REBOOT: A COSMIC HORROR is a disturbing tale of IT departments around the world. A dark and humorous horror from DE McCLUSKEY, author of The Twelve, Zola, CRACK and The Boyfriend.

About the author

D E McCluskey was born in 1973, in Liverpool, England. He is the author of novels, graphic novels and comics. He lives with his daughter (an author in her own right (at the age of 8) with her children's adventure The Hangry Hamster), his partner, her daughter, and a sausage dog called Ted.
He began writing in 2011, creating his first comic publication entitled Interesting Tymes, an anthology of short horror stories written in rhyme for children and adults. This was quickly followed by the second in the series, along with a spin off. Dave then moved on to more adult related fiction, releasing a number of one-shot comics, followed by his first, full length book, the graphic novel, Doppelgänger.
More graphic novels and comics ensued, including a collaboration with artist Joe Matthews to produce a retelling of the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, only this time rewritten completely in rhyme.
Dave then turned his sights onto writing novels. His debut novel The Twelve was released in 2017 to great reviews. This was followed by a collaboration with a local, Liverpool music historian, to produce a historical thriller called In The Mood… For Murder, based in Liverpool in 1946.
Dave likes to work mostly in dark, or mainstream horror, although he has cross genres into extreme horror, comedy, thrillers, romantic drama, and children's books.
He is also working with a number of other authors/comic creators, in collaborations in their works.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe end of a world occurring in an IT Department is hilarious to me. There were so many times while reading this that I thought to myself “What am I even reading and how am I actually enjoying it” but in the best way possible. The characters were funny and despicable, the horror was grotesque and explicit. HP and The Master was a great Easter egg and I actually did like reading it.

Disturbing, creepy, disgusting, and horrific -these are a few of my favorite things, and when you toss in some humorous one liners, you have me hooked.
I loved this, take the classic IT cure-all and turn it into a cosmic horror story. That’s right, turn it off, then turn it back on again but with a whole new meaning.
I think we all know how mundane office life can be, and Carl is living this hel! everyday. Maybe mundane isn’t so bad compared to what he finds on his bosses computer.
I’m not going to say any more than that except that the ending was perfect. I was freaking cheering
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2025Format: KindleReboot combines cosmic horror with tech horror, which made for a unique spin on the cosmic genre. This was bloody and I wasn’t always sure where it was going, which was a good thing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe plot drew me in right away. A cosmic horror novel in a contemporary UK office setting was definitely unique enough to catch my interest. I loved the witty banter and IT humor. The characters were engaging and I found myself rooting for them all, even the terrible ones.
The story was excellent and I think could've stood on its own somewhat with less bodily fluids and less shock value type grossness. All the yuck substances seemed a little over-the-top for me and didn't all seem necessary for what was otherwise an excellent story. I found myself skipping over some of those descriptions to get back to the events of the story and reconnect with its characters.
Still worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025Format: KindleWell it's done and I'm not sure what it was but I know it was something. So I'm not sure how to review something that was completely different than anything I have ever read. Was this book disturbing? Yes. Was it crazy? Yes. Was it disgusting? Yes in the best of ways. Was it forbidden? Yes. Was it fun? Yes.
However at first I thought that it was going to be a bore. But and I say this with force. When it picked up it really picked up and it never let up. Not even the ending let up. For the sake of weirdness read this book and remember to "turn them off and turn them on again."
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReboot: A cosmic horror. By DE McCluskey. I loved this book. Not a dull moment at all. Carl works in the IT department and is stuck in a rut with his life. He is tired if the annoying calls to fix others computers, turn it off and turn it on again. He is asked to fix Gerard’s (CEO) laptop. Gerard asks for him because he knows Carl will keep his mouth shut about the sick and dark files on it. What Carl finds is worse than he could ever imagine. In the book the band Genesis is mentioned. I sang the same part each time I read that snippet 🤣. Sick and disgusting all the way through. FANTASTIC

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCosmic horror meets Tech. Carl (a likeable IT) guy, has to cover for his lecherous boss and his filthy downloads again. But, this time it is different, this time it may bring about the end of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great cosmic horror book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have a love hate relationship with lovecraft but if more were written like this I would enjoy the genre more.
I really enjoyed the depth of characters given but also those that didn't have a lot of depth were instantly recognisable from life.
I enjoyed reading about the character of Carl and I know that feeling all too well of hating your job and all the annoyances that other people give you.
Reading Tasha's downward spiral into madness and all her anxieties was unfortunately quite hard hitting. The way that the guys in her office don't see her as a woman because she's not that kind of woman and hire Jodi who is useless at her job but is just a bit of eye candy also hit hard. The kind of workplace where it doesn't matter how qualified or how hard you work, If you don't look pretty then you don't get the better jobs. I'm glad this sort of injustice was included in this book because it bought a lot of reality of the workplace into the novel. I didn't expect a cosmic horror to show a lot of injustice of an unfair workplace from the way people treat others because they didn't get an email or the internet speed not being fast enough but for some reason that is reason enough to shout and be angry at the the only person who can help you.
Gerald was so entitled and I'm glad he got the end he deserved. I definitely worked with someone like Gerald in the past. A justified and immensely satisfying ending

5.0 out of 5 stars A Charnel House of Depravity
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCarl hates his job as an engineer in the IT department, his colleagues annoy him, the staff are constantly moaning and his boss, Gerard is a grade A pervert. When Gerard asks him to sort out his laptop he clicks on something that plunges him into the dark web where he is recruited to usher in a new age. All he has to do is turn them off and turn them on again.
A cosmic horror that leads you kicking and screaming through a charnel house of depravity. We’ve all worked in offices with people like this where you nod and agree when you really want to hug them round the neck with a rope! This takes that scenario to a whole other dimension!
It explores grotesque perversion, the sickening acts committed in the darkest recesses of the internet and the depths to which humans can plummet in pursuit of gratification or through psychological torture. It is also a hell of a cosmic horror, soaked in the bile of Lovecraft and vomited up from the depths of the darkest hell, absolutely fabulous!
