Purchase options and add-ons
They said the meek would inherit the Earth.
As far as Jarek can tell, though, they must've been speaking Dutch or something, because those "meek" aliens sure did make a bloody mess of things. Even so, Jarek wasn't about to make a fuss over the raknoth apocalypse. Not until those red-eyed bastards stole his exosuit.
You don't steal a man's exosuit...
But when Jarek's quest for vengeance runs him straight up against an alien stronghold, and a blonde arcanist who throws around grown men like telekinetic frisbees, he soon learns there's far worse than missing exosuits to worry about. And if he and his fiery new friend don't put a stop to it, they may just be looking at Apocalypse Number Two...
Don your power armor, grab your copy, and join Jarek and Rachel for a rip-roaring sci-fi thrill-ride today!
Warning: This book contains big hearts, BIGGER swords, and a whole metric crap-ton of high-octane badassery. Also, swears. And snark. LOTS of snark. Read at your own risk.

About the author

Luke is a storyteller whose dreams include learning the ways of the Force, becoming a sentient robot, and maybe even one day growing up. And lots of zombies. Don't ask.
(Also, the "growing up" bit was a lie.)
After studying engineering science at Penn State and neuroengineering at Drexel, Luke finally decided to throw in the towel on building a working Iron Man suit and opted instead to simply make things up and write them down. Boy, is he having more fun now.
When he's not holed up in his cave trying to string words together, he can often be found powerlifting, video-gaming, reading, and/or drinking the darkest, most roasty beers he can get his mitts on. Sometimes all at once.
But you know what? Enough about Luke. He's really not that interesting. Still, if you'd like to say hi to him for whatever reason, he'd probably be glad to hear from you. Swing by lukermitchell.com to say hi and pick up some free books!
Just watch out for the Force-wielding robot zombies...

- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2017This book went by really quickly for me, in a very good way. I found it hard to put down and looked forward to getting back to it when I did have to stop.
It's an action packed romp featuring a charming rogue in a high-tech suit of armor and his AI side kick (a la Iron Man and Jarvis) as a reluctant hero with a strong female magic wielder as a love interest.
I thought to change pace by starting a much more famous novel (the inspiration for a highly successful franchise), but found myself switching back to the next book in this series, Hell to Pay, instead.
Gladly, it seems like there is much more to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024The aliens call themselves Rath but they are just old fashioned vampires. They came and destroyed our civilization and fed off our survivor’s.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 20173.5 stars. Red Gambit is the first book, other than the prequel, in The Harvesters series. Overall it is a futuristic type thriller. You can read it as a standalone but it does have a cliffhanger ending for the next book. There is violence.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. This is a futuristic thriller that has a very different take on vampires. As usual, everything is not as it seems. It helps to understand the storyline if you have read the prequel Soldier of Charity, but you can figure it out if you haven't I look forward to reading the next book Hell to Pay.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2017It's Iron Man meets Falling Skies -- sort of.
Red Gambit starts off a bit slow in that the character of Jared is just irreverent enough to seem snarky at first; it is not a good sign when I am shaking my head at one of the "hero's" antics. But then he sort of grew on me. Mr. Mitchell creates an interesting world populated by people who, after I got past some of their antics, are real enough to also hold my interest.
I received Red Gambit as a Kindle Book of the Month, and liked it enough that I not only signed up for Mr. Mitchell's mailing list (which nets you a free prequel), but also bought book #2.
I look forward to the next book in this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017Started a bit slow, but it really hooked me a couple of chapters in. I’ve already finished the 2nd book and the third is coming out soon. I cant wait. Luke's writing is smooth, exciting, and easy to follow. Lots of dry humor abounds in this story. The interaction between the male and female leads is classic! Pick up the series, you will enjoy it tremendously.
Update: I have finished the series (4 books) and it is outstanding. Luke's writing has gotten better with each book. His writing is clean, easy to follow and generates amazing mental images. His AI is my favorite character and I can "Hear" Jarvis's voice in my head when Al talks. Pretty good stuff for a new writer. Come jump on the Luke bandwagon. I think he will become one of the top SyFi authors. Start with Soldier of Charity - a prequel which is only 99 cents on Amazon. Low risk, high reward.
Update 2: Luke has started a new series (The Enochian War series) which is a prequel to the Harvester series. One book is published and the next is out Sep 18. The books (I got a sneak peak early) are just as good as the original series with a couple of the Enochian characters you learn about in the next Harvester books .
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2017There are origin stories where the main character discovers their strength/powers slowly through the first act, and the reader gets to see the growth of a character with each page (movie examples would include: Iron Man, Spider-Man, etc). Then there are those where the protagonist starts strong, is depowered for an extended time, and the reader is left waiting for hundreds of pages to see him/her as advertised (e.g., Thor, basically every superhero sequel).
Red Gambit falls in the latter category. However, Luke Mitchell does a good job of making the intervening space entertaining, particularly the banter between Jarek (the protagonist) and, well, basically everyone else. The setting is a blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and I would describe the style as action and dialogue oriented, with a small twinge of mystery. Though nothing particularly heavy in any of those regards - this is far from "epic" fantasy, nor does it require a flowchart to memorize 500 characters. Just a solid, fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2017I bought this on a whim. Saw a Sci fi that mentioned magic and I have always liked the cross over of the genres. Far too many authors can't find the proper balance. Glad to say Mr. Mitchell did a great job. I loved the book. I came to really like Rachel the arcanist. She seems to be an isolationist, looking to avoid problems, but is super loyal to her brother. And Jarek is the lovable jackass, but who also happens to be a badass. Read the book, read Cursed Blood, the prequel (which was as good or better) and about to read Soldier of Charity, which is also a prequel but in a later time period. I recommend the book, and especially Cursed Blood. Great job.

5.0 out of 5 stars "He finally paid the Pryce for it."
Rachel Cross is looking for her brother Michael, and, rumours are, he's being held prisoner by the Red King, the raknoth who has overseen the world since the Catastrophe fifteen years before. Jarek wants his suit back, an exosuit he shares with Al, 'home' as well as giving him enhanced powers. Seems the only person who might know where it is just happens to be this very same Michael. His explosive first contact with Rachel occurs In the prisons of the Red King's castle...
Great story, vividly written with superb characterisations and very fast paced, imaginative battle scenes.. Rachel is arcanist able to channel powers: she's a tough, if frightened, lady looking out for her "boy scout" revolutionary brother, whilst Jarek is a sardonic, egotistical joker, a "let's see what happens kind of guy", and a pretty hot fighter even without his suit. And that Red King is a really nasty piece of work. There are other great personalities, too, such as Pryce ("Albert Einstein's evil twin gone mad scientist and starting to bald") and the past hero of the Resistance, missing now for five years, Alaric. So many comedic one liners in a rattling good adventure story.
I loved this book and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone looking for an addictive reading, nicely structured, fast fun book with a hint of superheroes. Completely stand alone, it does end with a super big cliffhanger and I, for one, am really looking forward to book two. Oh, and don't forget to read the author's end notes, including the dedication: they are almost as entertaining as the story itself.

A captivating tale of resistance against the bad aliens who are trying to take over the world. It starts slow but builds interest as it goes

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique book that made for an interesting reading session.
I picked up this book right after finishing the Soldier of Charity due to the title of the prequel intrigues me to read and find out more about this story. Luke is a talented writer who needs more people to recognize and appreciate his work. Red Gambit really stands out among the read-and-forget crop of SF/F books on the market right now. The story feature a main character whose sense of humor does not seem to ever fade no matter how dire the situation is. This is one of the few books whose author choose to stick with the main story line and tries to deliver it to the reader as fast as possible. Others normally choose to drag out for at least a chapter trying to explain how a character got a scar (really?). In Red Gambit, if you blink, good luck, see ya, we have already move on to a different part of the story. The result? A medium density book that is packed with actions, humor, stand out characters as well as a captivating story. Can't wait to get my hands on the second books of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Apocalyptic, Sci-Fi with Magic
This story is set in an apocalyptic world, where the Raknoth have reined destruction down wiping out much of humanity and leaving the rest limping along trying to survive. Refreshingly there were no zombies.
The Story is about Rachel an arcanist that manipulates energy hunting for her missing brother and Jarek, a not so heartless mercenary looking for his iron man suit and willing to do just about anything to get it back again.
Off the bat – This was such a great read and a real page turner. It is full of action, fun and has everything from shotguns to high tech weapons and a wizard’s staff which adds a touch of fantasy but kind of fits. I mean the bad guys are alien lizard vampires that can morph into human form so why not a touch of magic.
Jaric is a wise-cracking, kickass mercenary that cares about people more than he wants to admit (all though he does kill a lot of them) and Rachel is a gifted arcanist that is more than a match for Jaric and indeed pretty much everyone. The dialogue flows whip quick and smart and had me grinning like an idiot half the time.
I’ve read many books with these types of protagonists in. Confident, clever, cocky and with an answer for every occasion. Sometimes it can get tiresome. Not here…not for me. The story was well woven, the scenes choreographed with characters that fit so neatly together it was a pleasure to read. The fight scenes were really well executed. The world building was simple but well-crafted. The bad guys were…well bad but also dangerous, cunning and ruthless. Everything you want to see in a villain(s).
This was an easy read. It was no brain teaser to be sure but that’s not to say it wasn’t clever and it was certainly Fun with a capital F. Sometimes the best thing you can say about a book is that the end came too soon. It did.
If you like Apocalyptic action books I highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and want more. Jarek is a Han Solo’s Han Solo. It was fun and entertaining with lots of action.
