Red Christmas: Disturbing yuletide tales for grown-ups (Red Wombats) Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

"Yes, I call myself Father Christmas. If you want to call me Santa Claus, go ahead. Pere Noel, fine. Dun Che Lao Ren, I really won’t mind. Although, if you insist on Ded Moroz I might put you on my Awkward Sod List. Or the Russian one, depending on where you are.
"I have lots of lists. There are the ones that everyone knows, of course: the Naughty List and the Nice List. Then there’s a Grumpy List, a Wide-eyed Believers List, and even, if you can believe it, a Horny For Santa List."

A collection of off-kilter short stories with a Christmas theme from award-winning storyteller Michael Wombat.

A Yorkshireman living in the rural green hills of Lancashire, Michael Wombat is a man of huge beard. He has a penchant for good single-malts, inept football teams, big daft dogs and the diary of Mr. Samuel Pepys. Abducted by pirates at the age of twelve he quickly rose to captain the feared privateer ‘The Mrs. Nesbitt’ and terrorised the Skull Coast throughout his early twenties. Narrowly escaping the Revenue men by dressing as a burlesque dancer, he went on to work successively and successfully as a burlesque dancer, a forester, a busker, and a magic carpet salesman. The fact that he was once one of that forgotten company, the bus conductors, will immediately tell you that he is as old as the hills in which he lives. Nowadays he spends his time writing, telling tall tales in his bio, and pretending to take good photographs. You can have a good laugh at his blog or his photographs, but most of all please go and mock him mercilessly on Twitter or Facebook. Michael Wombat has published over one book. Other authors are available.

“Michael Wombat brought us to near tears by his short stories. He is a natural story teller.” – Diana Jackson, author of The Riduna Series.

I wasn't really sure what I was getting into when I decided to read this collection of short stories but I figured what the heck! Luckily for me, and for you should you choose to take a very short amount of time out of your day to read them, these short stories are brilliant!

The author has a terrific writing style and each story is completely unique. It's always fun to read short stories that aren't like any other, stick with you when you are done, and are so well written you are extremely sad when they are over. Christmas is the theme of these but I wouldn't recommend reading them to children! As an adult though, you'll love them!

Anyone who has a short amount of time and loves absolutely incredible stories, you want to make sure you read these! I highly recommend this collection.

I quite like the style and imagination behind this. We will all likely read a few Christmas books or stories as it is the season for all that. But I don't know that you would find many such as these. I have to stop and wonder which was my favourite. at first I thought it was the war time Christmas story as the element of tragedy was captured nicely in such a short space.
Then I stopped thinking about that one and thought of the ranting Santa Clause in the final story. the writer had me laughing at that one. but mostly I love the alternate ideas of Christmas in his warped mind, and warped it so clearly is.
Finally I settled on it, my favourite; Red Christmas. why? I wont go into too much detail as I don't want to ruin it for the next reader, but suffice to say that's just messed up!

What a find! Four very different views on Christmas in easy to read, well written stories. True to say I shall view Father Christmas differently from now on! Loved them all. Now, let's see what other gems this author has written ......

Short stories that variously made me cringe, chuckle, and get goosebumps! Well worth downloading so you've got something on your Kindle to fill a few moments. The variety of short stories is a testament to Wombat's creative genius.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great 10 minute read - with a healthy dollop of darkness

    Actually 4.5/5

These short stories are very short - I think I read all 4 within about 10 minutes so this is just something to be aware of if you're looking for something more substantial, but I downloaded for 99p and was perfectly happy. These four stories were the perfect bedtime read for me, all Christmas stories but not your usual happy fare. Michael Wombat has produced something a bit dark, but still great fun, for Christmas. My favourite was the titular story but all four were satisfying brief looks at Christmas.

A great antidote to the usual saccharine Christmas stories.

Very short stories, which was fine. First story about WWI trench was a good start, the rest weren't nice at all. Deleted straight after. Disappointed.
