4.4 out of 5 stars 134 ratings

The Famine Cycle comes to its startling conclusion in Book 3, REQUIEM OF SILENCE.

Every world has its end. With Famine returned and freed of his restraints, Airene must find a way to stop the daemon god from devouring the world — no matter the cost...

The armies of the Avvad, the most powerful empire in the world, have arrived at the walls of Oedija. Despot Jaxas has rallied the city's meager defenses, but with the Manifest and Underguild still lashing in their death throes, the realm is barely holding strong.

Even facing the destruction of her home, Airene keeps watch for a different threat. Famine, the God of Hunger, has finally broken free of his cage and feasts upon the world. Unfettered, he will consume all life on its surface.

When an unexpected ally appears, Airene and her companions embark on a quest to find a way to stop the daemon god. Racing against time, seeking to stay ahead of both Avvad and Famine, they seek allies and weapons receded into myth.

But no war is won without great sacrifice — and if she is to succeed, Airene must sacrifice all she is...

J.D.L. Rosell was swept away on a journey when he stepped foot outside his door and into The Hobbit. He hasn't stopped wandering since.

In his writing, he tries to recapture the wonder, adventure, and poignancy that captivated him as a child. His explorations have taken him to worlds set in over a dozen novels and five series, which include Ranger of the Titan Wilds, Legend of Tal, The Runewar Saga, and The Famine Cycle.

When he's not off on a quest, Rosell enjoys his newfound hobby of archery and older pastimes of hiking and landscape photography. But every hobbit returns home, and if you step softly and mind the potatoes, you may glimpse him curled up with his wife and two cats, Zelda and Abenthy, reading a good book or replaying his favorite video games.

Requiem of Silence: An Epic Fantasy Saga (The Famine Cycle #3), my thirteenth read from author J.D.L. Rosell. Well written & enjoyable epic. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. Comparable to Andy Peloquin's Queen of Thieves series, If you like Andy Peloquin you'll probably like J.D.L. Rosell. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Again I was kept up at night reading when I should be sleeping.

First thing I want to say is I love the play on words in the three titles of this series. From whispers, to echoes, to silence... a bit ominous in many ways! The story is well-told, of Airene and her 'team' as they make ever-changing plans to battle an ancient enemy. There are places in the book that are very depressing, but hope is never totally lost. A fitting ending to an epic tale.

I received an ARC; this is my honest review.

The action-filled conclusion of The Famine Cycle was everything I hoped it would be, and some things I had not even considered.
One war is over before it starts, another seems hopeless beyond reconning and the main characters embark on a quest with little chance of success or survival. If that wasn’t enough, a ravenous god is still bent on destroying the world and no one believes he can be stopped.
So, yeah, a lot of plot action to be had.

As with the first two books, the storytelling and world building are top notch. So too is the editing, which we rarely notice unless it isn’t. The book is a real page turner, so much that I had to struggle to put it down when the real world required my attention.

At times the main character Airene was difficult for me to empathize with, as she often acted without thinking - always leading to bad a result. We all do things that we regret later, but she continued to make this mistake even after it lead to the loss of life.

No matter my personal feelings about the main character, it is still a story well told with a very satisfying conclusion - and I am glad I had the opportunity to take the journey to the Four Realms.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre finale
Reviewed in Australia on April 24, 2022
I was very bored by this finale and it felt like there was just busywork leafing up to the inevitable and obvious ending to the story. I was saddened by the lack of oomph in the crescendo and upset that Josiah wrapped things up the way he did. I will not give up on him as he showed great promise at times I this trilogy. Hopefully some of his other series click with me more
