Edge of the Rift: The Search for Jewel Island (The Rift Walker Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
If Esta wants to find her father, she may have to save reality first.
A book of multi-dimensions, demonic forces and a whole new way of thinking about... everything.
1984: Richard Brown went missing just days after becoming obsessed with Gatley House: a derelict building at the edge of town with a grisly past.
Two years later, his troubled daughter, Esta Brown, finally summons the courage to follow her father after spending almost every day staring at the old place, wondering what he'd discovered.
But as the truth about Gatley House slowly emerges, it reveals secrets and sinister dark forces that will make her question everything she thinks she knows about her father, her own identity, and even the very nature of reality itself.
As the Rift opens, Esta stands at the edge of another dimension. Will she reunite with her father, or is she about to unleash ancient forces she can't hope to control?
If you love reality-bending tales like the show 'Stranger Things' or 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman, then you'll love this mind-blowing novel!
A "Brilliantly imaginative" fantasy adventure series inspired by eastern mythology.
Dive into Edge of the Rift and join Esta on a breath-taking adventure that challenges beliefs, ignites the imagination, and opens the door to a world beyond our own.

“Not since what happened to Charlie.” This is the chilling first reference to Charlie Bullock in Chapter 2 (titled “The Murder House”). It takes nearly half the book to find out what did happen to her, and this tactic absolutely works. R. N. Jackson reels readers in with a rapid-fire sequence of events like the click of dominoes falling in a line.
Esta Brown is a troubled teen with a terrible temper, which is unsurprising given that two years ago her father disappeared without a trace, shattering her world. Hers is a small one, so it’s also unremarkable that everyone seems to have something to say about Esta or her dad, and it’s frequently derogatory.
Stories have sprung up around the abandoned Gatley House, but what draws Esta is the knowledge that it somehow interested her dad. When she plucks up the courage to sneak in, it’s about as hair-raising an experience as fear and darkness could conjure, but she’s not the only one unable to chalk it all up to adrenaline—and things get weirder from there. Though the book starts with a ghost story vibe, it quickly morphs into a fantasy adventure involving Tibetan-inspired temples, complete with robed monks and screaming demons. Here Esta finds mysteries tied inexplicably to those that already trouble her.
This wild adventure keeps readers turning pages to find answers. Within the story, Esta is doing the same, because at the core of everything is her determination to reunite with the father who failed her—who left her feeling like she failed him. Jackson may have been through an impressive array of his own adventures, but he also has a good grasp on people. His teen characters struggle appropriately with identity, each in their own way; and the adults, seen mostly through Esta’s eyes, make up a varied, nuanced sketch.
The story winds around a bit, giving misfit Esta time to chew on her pain—and to discover unlikely aid from a small scattering of people willing to seriously consider the idea that she is not, in fact, insane. Ultimately, it’s as much about Esta finding herself as it is about finding a way to save the world. So much of the story, like life, is about choices: what we do with them, and who that makes us.
In the end, Esta finds peace… And the reader finds the promise of more adventure to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing - an unusual fantasy
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat writing. Different from the usual fantasy novel.
This is a great page turner. The first chapter grabbed me from the start. It’s a tense, twisty-turny fantasy adventure with lots of cliffhangers and unusual surprises. The main characters are really interesting. Esta, whose story it is, is an unruly, chaotic girl whose dry sense of humour helps her cope with her anger with the world. She’s a reluctant ‘risk taker’ in an 80s world - no mobiles, no social media - who skids into a completely alien world full of ancient monks and supernatural beings. What happens in one world is reflected in the other. If one is threatened so is the other. Esta was destined to be the bridge between them and she‘s appalled when she discovers how crucial she is to both.
What I wasn’t expecting was the ancient philosophy that she’s exposed to as she meets her challenges. I found the old monk - who sees who she really is - fascinating. He tries to get her to understand that there are more ways of seeing ‘reality’ than she thinks. Her growing understanding is crucial to the story and provides some laugh out loud moments as she grapples with new ideas. It’s thought provoking and made me want to find out more about eastern thinking.
The ending (which I won’t give away) is as good as the beginning. I ‘m really glad that this is the first book of three and I’m now impatient for book number two!
It’s so visual and vivid, I’d love to see it made into a film.

5.0 out of 5 stars an original take on the fantasy adventure genre
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRivetting read, tackling ideas about identity, searching for "truth" & what lies behind the surfaces of life, all in a fantasy adventure format - quite an achievement. Aimed at younger readers but it works on many levels so can appeal to a wide audience.
