4.4 out of 5 stars 182 ratings

Tess hasn’t experienced many kindnesses in her eighteen years. So, when her boyfriend abandons her at a small-town gas station with nothing but the clothes on her back, she’s furious, but not overly surprised.

Since calling her parents isn’t an option, she finds herself at the mercy of strangers. But even the worst situations can have a silver lining. For Tess, it’s a town called Jasper Creek, a diner everyone calls Earl’s, and a young mechanic named Colten Reed.

If you’re looking for the perfect feel-good summer romance, Rayna York's captivating standalone novel gives readers the small-town romance they crave with enough feels to make the heart sing.

Charming and beautifully written, The Right Kind of Unexpected is a gentle, heart-warming tale of redemption, hope, discovering who you are meant to be and finding the one place in the world you can call home. This is a story that echoes back to the old-fashioned notion of working for what you want, having the patience to wait for something and being prepared to take a chance on love.”—Julia Blake, author

A feel good book that makes me smile
The Right Kind of Unexpected follows a girl named Tess who even though she has her parent’s wealth is missing something from her life. Her emotionally abusive mother gives her plenty of reasons to act out, that’s why she’s out with a bad boy named Dax who happens to leave her stranded in a small town with nothing because he took her car and everything in it on their way to Florida from New York where Tess is from. She gets stranded in the most quaint town imaginable with a cast of characters who I loved instantly the moment I met them.  Colton is Tess’s love interest, a sweet southern gentleman who opens doors for her and treats her right. Twyla is Colton’s hard working no nonsense mom, she runs the diner with minimal help (not that Josie isn’t the biggest help ever) until Tess comes along. Earl is the best cook ever and Colton’s dad, Twyla’s husband. He’s a sweet man who welcomes Tess into their family because her own family is really distant emotionally. Josie is Colton’s extremely smart younger sister, she has a passion for reading and she helps her family run the business.  Naomi is Colton’s very protective friend, they have known each other since they were toddlers so they’re like brother and sister. As Tess gets to know her better, she quickly becomes Tess’s fiercely protective friend. Naomi really would do anything for her friends and she feels like it’s her duty to always have her friend’s backs no matter what. Sri is also a friend, she’s more sweet and shy. She’s smart and in love with a boy named Dawson, Dawson is one of Colton’s friends. Jeb is the old man that frequently comes into the diner. He’s pretty rude with everyone until Tess puts a stop to it, he’s actually just a sweet old man who has experienced a lot of pain in his life and Tess is glad to be there for him. This cast of characters really make the story fantastic. I smiled so many times while reading this book and I sincerely hope that there are still people in the world like Colton and his family. It really was a beautiful book, I really enjoyed reading it.

This story pulled me in immediately. The book begins with a bang as Tess is abandoned by her "boyfriend" at a gas station/diner many states away from her home in New York. He has also taken her car and belongings. What will she do? Tess is from New York and has all the things that money can buy. What she doesn't have is a happy family. It is the beginning of summer, and she dreads calling her parents and asking for help. Fortuitously, the owners of the gas station and the diner allow her to stay in the apartment over the diner in exchange for her help running it. Twyla (the mother) even finds clothes for her to wear. Tess cannot believe how kind this family is to her as she is a complete stranger in a bad situation. Tess continues to be mystified by the family's lifestyle, friends, customers, and especially their oldest son, Colten. Tess hasn't ever been a part of a close community, and she falls in love not only with Colten, but with the small town of Jasper Creek. You see the family, community, people, and the scenery through Tess's eyes. You feel as if you are also meeting everyone and seeing the beautiful town yourself. Food is a huge part of this story as the family owns a diner and the father, Earl is an excellent chef. The description of many of the dishes and food at several of the gatherings adds a lovely culinary element to the story. While the reader is enjoying the author's charming descriptions, they are also drawn to the main story that centers around Colten and Tess. The do fall in love, but they are both young and there are many issues and complications to work through for both of them. The reader is rooting for Tess and Colten, but the question of whether they can ever make things work hangs over the story and creates tension as well as suspense. Some surprising events and changes occur, and you find yourself wondering how the story will end for these two young and very much in love characters. This book is an excellent YA novel, but adults will enjoy it as well. It keeps you reading and wondering what will happen next in the town of Jasper Creek. You won't want to put it down until you know the ending.

The Right Kind of Unexpected is a beautiful story about a young woman who finds herself—and love—when and where she least expects it. This story is about a young woman who is coming into herself as she navigates through life and relationships, fighting for her heart’s desires.

The reader is instantly drawn into the story, from the first chapter, caught up in the unfavorable hand that Tess has been dealt—abandoned in a small town. The struggles that she faces and the choices she has to make kept me rooting for her throughout the story.

I really liked the theme of perseverance woven throughout the story. Even though Tess grew up in a family that wasn’t good at nurturing her or meeting her emotional needs, she didn’t let those experiences define her. She was willing to break free of the people and chains from her past. Additionally, I loved the idea that when we think life has dealt us an unfair hand—in just ONE day, everything can turn around for the good.

The author does a brilliant job developing the main characters. She gives the reader a plethora of information/background that allows them to have a comprehensive understanding of the characters’ motivations and what ultimately made them into the people they are. I feel this was masterfully done by the author because it allowed me to empathize with them and see the world through their lenses.

Overall, this book is a prefect summer read.

This is such a wonderful story and comical with how it begins. Tess is not at all what is expected from an art loving, rich, NY city girl unexpectedly spending her summer in a small town in the middle of nowhere in the south. I love watching her gain her confidence, friendships and so much more. The relationships in this story say so much.

Colten, the small town boy seems to be everything anyone could want, but he holds back for his own reasons and a family we all fall in love with. The author did such a great job portraying these two characters, Tess’s growth, their growing attraction, the relationships Tess develops and her struggles. I highly recommend this read for anyone who loves new adult fiction and romance. This book seems to have it all!

Thank you to NetGalley provided by Toad Tree Press for this eArc! You will find my unbiased review below.

A rich girl from Manhattan, NY- Tess has just graduated high school and decides to take a trip with her boyfriend to Florida. What she didn’t expect was being stranded in a small town without her car, phone, or wallet. A family that owns a diner and garage/gas station takes her in and gives her a job and place to stay.

While Tess is in the small town of Jasper Creek she never expected to meet a people who would become family and friends or even fall in love. But once the summer end does she leave to start University with her family that doesn’t feel like family or stay for a guy she just met a few weeks ago?

I feel as if I was expecting more from this. Whenever it’s something where you fall in love over the summer I want a love that I could feel the bond so deeply I feel the same emotions. But the romance wasn’t anything truly special. If you’re looking for an easy, quick read this one can definitely meet those expectations. I did like the characters and it did have some cute moments. I did like that the characters actually talked about things that had big impacts about their lives. There were times I thought no one would actually do what the main character did. I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone but anyone that likes a summer romance with some drama then definitely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a rollercoaster
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2024
So, don't give up in the first 10 pages when its all a little unbelievable- like, who just randomly stays with people they've only just met on the side of the road? And what family gives an 18 year old they've just met an apartment? How are the parents genuinely not looking for her, or is she fine about losing the car?
Suspend disbelief and just roll with it.
    Quite a sweet story,
Rather random ending that felt a little like it was a project that was started, left on a shelf for a while and then kind of 'oops, need to tidy this away' - which was actually a shame as the rest of the book was a sweet journey. The ending worked, could have been stronger to honour the rest of the book, but it worked.
This was a pleasant way to pass some time.

I was completely immersed in the sweet love story between Tess and Corten and her love story with the characters of this charming town called Jasper Creek. Feeling Tess on every level, I was 18 again, waiting to be kissed—when you least expect it, good things can happen! The writing is excellent and engaging, and the author does a great job of taking control of your curiosity. Midway through, I couldn't flip the pages fast enough to find out what happened! This book is not only for YA—all readers can relate and will be left satisfied and smiling. The Right Kind of Unexpected was just what I needed. A gem of a story and a must-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern-day fairy tale of unlikely love
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 20, 2022
A modern-day fairy tale of love growing in the most unlikely places and enduring through the harshest of trials. When Tess is dumped by her fair-weather boyfriend in the backend of nowhere, she is left in somewhat of a predicament. With no money, belongings, phone, or ID, and with no one to call upon for help, Tess has little choice but to accept the charity of strangers.

Yet sometimes life can give us exactly what we need, precisely when we need it. Strangers may be the friends and found family we never realised we wanted and when real life finally catches us with Tess, it is a bigger wrench to leave than she ever imagined it would be.

Charming and beautifully written, “The Right Kind of Unexpected” is a gentle, heart-warming tale of redemption, hope, discovering who you are meant to be and finding the one place in the world you can call home. This is a story that echoes back to the old-fashioned notion of working for what you want, having the patience to wait for something and being prepared to take a chance on love.

An easy read, I devoured this book in two days and was left wanting more. With relatable characters and a relaxed pace that is comforting to fall into, what more can I say, other than I loved this book and am awarding it an easy five stars.
