Rivals and Roses (The Vaughns Book 1) Kindle Edition
What is Dr. Arthur Vaughn to do? When he moved to the country, he hadn’t anticipated meeting an intriguing and intelligent lady who shares his love of medicine. Or losing his heart to her the very first day.
But how does one court a lady when one’s tongue ties itself into knots whenever she is near?
What is Violet Templeton to do? Her family’s finances are holding on by a thread, and when a rival doctor settles in the village, stealing away their patients, Violet knows she has to get rid of him. One way or another, she must protect her family.
But how does one destroy a sweet man, who treats her like an equal and not a domineering bluestocking?
Can two lonely hearts survive the war to come? Or will they both end as casualties?

About the author
Born and raised in Anchorage, M.A. Nichols is a lifelong Alaskan, though she briefly ventured south to get a fancy bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from Utah State University—neither of which had anything to do with why she became an author, but they kept her alive while launching her publishing career.
As a child she despised reading, but thanks to her mother’s love and persistence, she saw the error of her ways and developed a deep and abiding obsession with books. Currently, she writes sweet historical romance and fantasy, but as a lover of many genres, she plans to explore more in the future.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I really, really enjoy Ms Nichol’s books. The care she takes in characterization and the focus on the heart and soul of the characters. Two awesome characters that hurt so much that it was almost painful…no it was literally painful. At one point I thought, if their broken hearts misunderstand one another one more time, I am throwing this book across the room. But I didn’t and I was rewarded!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2025I love MA Nichols characters who are not petite, blue-eyed blonds. It is so refreshing to have a leading lady and leading man who are not societies darlings, perfection in every way. She is masterful at weaving in the real human struggles that are more common than not and bringing out the joy of focusing more on substance rather than appearance.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025I found it a bit drawn out but I did enjoy it despite the edits. The characters are pleasant and their struggle to find their way in life is believable (just a bit slow). I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2024As I started reading this novel. I thought that the hero and heroine were not exciting or interesting. I was so wrong. Violet turned out to be a beautiful and tender heroine. I do not mean physically beautiful- her thoughts and feelings were amazing to read. Just loved this story. Read it in one day.. Could not put it down. Thank heavens I am retired. Not all heroes and heroines are stunningly gorgeous people. Sometimes they are real life people and that is what makes this a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024I really enjoy M.A. Nichols as an author. Many of her stories present a heroine who is a little bit older and overlooked. Violet takes care of everyone, but no one takes care of her. Experience has taught her not to interpret friendly interactions as romantic interest.
I found the characters well-written, and the plot was realistic.
Clean, historical romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024Violet brings out the best in Arthur. The problem is that Arthur brings out the best AND the worst in Violet. They connect immediately, but his coming threatens her family's livelihood and hijinks ensue. I loved it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nobody is perfect - and that makes for a better story
And that is the charm of this story. Neither the hero nor the heroine feels good looking or loveable so they do not recognise when love comes their way. And despite their flaws, they reach the happy place they longed for. A very real kind of happy ever after with plenty of misunderstandings along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story!
Beautifully and honestly crafted story that is a cut well above the usual in this genre by the merit of believable - and wonderfully flawed - characters. Brava to Nichols for her insightful tale, and for keeping the bar high. Highly recommended.
