The Riviera Mystery: A 1920s murder mystery Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 375 ratings

Who can you trust in a "sunny place for shady people"? A trip to the French Riviera sounds like just the ticket for Marjorie and Mrs Jameson. But from the moment they step aboard the famous Blue Train to the Mediterranean coast, it becomes clear that this won't be an ordinary vacation.
They've been invited to stay at the palatial Villa Beau Rivage for a month in the sun, after a dismal summer in London. Surrounded by diamond merchants, film stars, artists and art dealers, Marjorie is swept off her feet by her first experience of the beauty and colour of the Côte d'Azur – and by one artist in particular. However, romance goes on hold when she’s caught up in the aftermath of a death at a glamorous party.
Soon she’s asking herself exactly who she can trust, as her investigations lead her down a twisting road of money, passion, art and murder.

The Riviera Mystery can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fourth in the 1920s Murder Mystery series.

Anna Sayburn Lane is the author of page-turning murder mysteries set in jazz age London, and of award-winning short stories and contemporary thrillers. Her debut novel, Unlawful Things, was shortlisted for the Virago New Crime Writing award, and her first historical mystery, Blackmail In Bloomsbury, has been described as ‘like slipping on a pair of elegant evening gloves and slipping back to the golden age of detective fiction’.

Before turning to fiction, Anna worked as a journalist for local newspapers and medical journals – useful for thinking up novel ways of bumping off fictional characters. She lives in the UK, sharing her time between London and a small seaside town.

Loved the creation of a whole world to dive into. Great detail of life and cars. Too easy to figure out the mystery though, and there was an error in the French that stopped me for a while. Loved all the artists that were woven into the story.

As always, Marjorie, Mrs. Jameson. and Frankie are zestfully good characters. There's no high drama, just common sense and keen wits (with a little ju jitsu for gravy).

This book is no exception. Set in the coast of France, the death of a character is surrounded by a cast of people who, looking suspicious or innocent, are all in the frame for possibly being in on the murder. This is a delightful story if you want a jaunty good read.

A wonderful blend of interesting characters and clever plot twists and turns makes this latest in the Marjorie Swallows series a reading pleasure. The heady atmosphere of the Riviera art scene adds its own dash of mystique to the story.

The beauty of the Riviera comes out in this book, but what's even better is the further development of the characters we know now know and love!

Love, crime, suspense, and it was hard to guess who had done it! Plus the novel was set on the Riviera in the 1920s. Who could ask for more?

I've come across a lot of 1920s murder mystery series since joining Kindle Unlimited, and have given up on most of them after (sometimes during) the first book. The Marjorie Swallow series is a shining exception - the books are meticulously researched and beautifully written, the characters are engaging, and the plots are complex and a lot of fun. This book, the fourth in the series, sees Marjorie and Mrs Jameson visiting the south of France, a nice change from the London setting of most of the series. As an added bonus, Pablo Picasso himself makes a cameo appearance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series

I received an advance copy of this book, I have been a fan of this series from book one, and this one does not disappoint. I really enjoy the development of the characters, and in each book we find out more of Mrs. Jameson's past, each books gives us a hint, and this book reveals even more. Marjorie character becomes more confident, and she and Mrs. Jameson become closer and work well as a team. If you are looking for a light mystery book set in the 1920's you can't go wrong with this series. I appreciate the fact that Anna Sayburn Lane uses British spelling and grammar.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!

This took me back to my first visit to the Riviera area, so that was a pleasure in itself! Characters (whom we’ve met in earlier books - but that doesn’t matter if you’ve not read these) are well developed and believable, as is the plot.
We really feel for, and empathise with, our main protagonist going to that strange place Abroad as the story starts, and how she copes with Abroad as time goes on.
    A great read!
