Fate Points: A unique LITRPG : Book 1: Fields of Wasps Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 501 ratings

The fate of humanity did not rest on Tom, but it sure felt like it. Then again, despite their numbers all the chosen felt the same way.

The trial, the tutorial, or whatever you wanted to name it, was over. After forty long solitary years spent mastering the system, Tom, with his abilities reset was going to have to do it all again to save humanity.

The cost of failure would have an unimaginable impact on his friends and family. His sacrifices had propelled him into the top million, giving him the opportunity to make a difference. And he had a risky plan to do so.

Against their will, humanity had been chosen, and all Tom could do was to work with the system.

Universe spanning gods ran a regular competition on a world called Existentia where they pitted seven species from different universes all of whom have dominated their home planet against each other.

But a straight-out fight would be too simple. Existentia is a living, breathing, impossibly large, magical world with existing empires, secrets, dungeons and trials. The seven races in the current iteration of the competition have their own unique advantages to exploit, but first they have to survive long enough to show their worth.

Fate points is a third person single POV litrpg with a unique system and mechanics and strong, complicated side-characters.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Allan first fell in love with both computer games and writing when he was on a scholarship completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics. After graduating and getting a job writing was put to the side while that pesky thing called life got in the way.

A career in banking delivering complicated quantitative banking applications resulted. Very stereotypical;

Boring job as a banker - tick,

Suburban home - tick

Three kids - tick

Two dogs - tick

You get the point.

A little thing called a global pandemic then came along and gave Allan a chance to return to his dream of becoming a writer. Having recently read a variety of LITRPG books it was a genre that Allan was excited to explore in order to create a world that readers could immerse themselves into. With the familiarity of the gaming world gained from playing WOW, Skyrim, Fallout amongst others there is simple joy in creating an imaginative magic filled world that is at everyone’s fingertips. In his writing Allan aims to capture the feeling that he loves of being able to put yourself into a gaming world, develop your character and exploit the rules to the fullest.

Definitely one of the better entries in the litrpg genre. Loving the group dynamics and the mystery. Well written. Good balance of progression dynamics, character development, and plot movement.

I've been a LITRPG reader since the genre started. I read about 300-400 books a year. It is HARD to find a series that feels truly fresh. I want it all. I want world building, character development, a fresh take on skills and system dynamics, high stakes, and fighting that is fun without becoming tedious. I want a Main Character (MC) who I can relate to, who makes hard choices, faces real consequences, and who changes as the books unfold. I want morally gray choices, mature decision making, and imperfect options for the MC. I want the series to vary between fun action, introspective moments, world building, human drama, and strategy. Oh, and I want some unpredictable events and motivations. If you want all these things too, I have good news. This series gives us all of that and more.

In my opinion, this is the single most under-rated series in the genre.

The overview on Amazon and Royal Road does not adequately express how different this series is. This is NOT a standard retrogression series. Here is what I told my friends about these books (very minor spoilers that will NOT affect enjoyment):

The seven gods of Existentia are about to launch their next Competition, a decades-long game for power and prestige. Each god has chosen proxy champions from a species in the multiverse. The champions of each species will earn points by the ways they influence the world of Existentia, including by helping or killing each other. Deus has chosen humanity, a choice mocked by other gods. Humans are objectively weak, slow, and nearly totally unskilled for facing a world of magic and monsters. Humans seem destined to lose, and lose badly. And if the champions of humanity do poorly, then humans as a whole will perish.

But Deus is a strategist. She thinks humanity has what it takes to earn her victory.

Tom is one of Deus’ selected champions. Tom became one of the million champions of humanity based on one simple criteria – like every human on Earth, he was tested to see how long he could survive a trial death world, against progressively harder monsters and situations, completely on his own. Tom lasted for 40 years.

In a moment, Tom will exit stasis and join one of many small groups of humans. The Competition will begin. Tom won't know anyone in his group. His body will be that of a normal 20-year-old. He will take with him only the knowledge he learned in his trial, and a tiny set of advantage he bought using accomplishments in the trial. He will have no weapon, no magic, and no idea of his environment.

Tom is banking everything on a plan he developed over 40 years. Each day, competitors were granted a single “yes/no” answer from the system. Tom’ used thousands of days of questions to learn about himself and the Competition. He is gambling his life on using his points to buy a "fate" skill. He is betting that Fate is not just “luck,” but is actually something a person can direct. If he is right, “luck” really can be the outcome of preparation and hard work. If he is wrong, he will likely die.

Tom has other worries. A solo tutorial based on long-term solo survival tests more than just stamina and skills. Tom barely held onto his sanity. Will the other top survivors share his vision of how to help humanity succeed? Is Tom's idea that luck/fate is something you can actually direct going to be a winning plan? And what will happen when his plans collides with Existentia, competitions races, and other humans.

I just love this series. One of the best Royal Road to Amazon transitions. I had to wait a LONG time for this series to come-out in book format, and I am glad it did.

Fate Points has a cover that depicts a spear-wielding guy in leather facing off against some chimeric characters, in an arena. This will immediately give you a skewed impression of the book. Yes, there's a brief arena sequence. No, it's not really a focus of the book.

This book is an isekai of the "chosen ones must pave the way for the general Earth population" persuasion. You'll find that it has all the right ingredients: characters, system, combat, dungeons, gods, etc. But what sets it apart is the thought put into it.

The setting is unique. I mean, yes, it's a game-like magical world. In that sense, it's not unique. But the cast spends the first book working their way free from a massive plain swarming with wasps, which I've never seen before. It's a pressure cooker and we see that play out amongst the "tribe".

The system is unique. Sure, it's a LitRPG thing with magic and levels. But it is structured in an unusual way, has features I've seen only in this story, and has such well-considered nuance that I find myself interested. I've read a pile of LitRPG and, outside of this book, I'm at the point of "blah blah, levels. blah, blah skills. Get back to the story!"

The characters are not unique, as such. But they are distinctive in motivation and approach, with a side of entertaining banter and topped with unanswered questions! And that's before we consider the various Gods and their "game".

The combat is solid. Further along in the story (RR reader, here!), more interesting tactics and combat philosophies come into play. In book one, you get just a taste ...and it's good.

If you read LitRPG for alien/fantasy civilization, you'll be disappointed. Everyone else, get in here with me!

Fate Points is a great story, one of my favorites on Royal Road, with intricate plotting, great characterization and a fascinating setting with gods, all playing a game with and for the survival of their chosen species. The races that place high in the game get to move on to a planet that will let them thrive. The losing races get sent to much worse planets; which is practically a death sentence.

One of the game-playing gods, DEUS, has picked the race of physically weak and magically quirky humans as her champions. The other gods don't think much of her choice, but DEUS is clever. She has a plan.

Fate Points has as its main character the human Tom, who very wisely used his time and the available resources in the tutorial before Existentia to scheme a way for humans to win the game. He is putting his efforts and most of his resources into min-maxing the human racial talent for conscious fate manipulation. He plans for humanity to luck its way to victory.

He's going to have a hard time doing that, though, because it turns out one of his biggest challenges in Existentia aren't the other competitor species, nor the native monsters, but his fellow humans. Tom looks weak and he's bad at socializing, which means he must suffer plentiful bullying and extra pain before his carefully researched strategy begins to show its worth, not so much to himself as to the other humans, who as it turns out all have their own strategy for humanity to win.

One of the things I like most about Tom's journey is his way of making the most out of scant available resources. He picked a weaker than usual starting point in order to maximize his gains later. It appeals to me as a player of games.

There's a grab bag of good ideas lifted from all the recent subgenres, smashed together into a whole story that somehow turns it into a surprisingly cohesive story with a likable, if naive, protagonist. The explorations of min maxing in a litrpg universe are really the best part, and hopefully the sequel will continue that.

It was a fun and interesting first book in a series.
I enjoyed it and will definitely pick up the next one.
The system ist engaging and the characters are more complex and interesting than in a lot of other litrpgs where oftentimes the world building is the only thing that keeps me interested.

    I can comfortably recommend this.

Solid book, checks a lot of the boxes for me.
Decent story, but the flashbacks are a bit annoying. I think I would have preferred to read the entire flashback.
The epilogue is... not my favorite. I would have personally skipped that entire portion.
I am however, eager to see what book 2 brings.
