- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2025Kitty, Jimmy, and their mother are hosting Indian dignitaries which doesn't go smoothly. While hosting their guests; there is a theft and a murder, both of which need to be solved. There are lots of twists and turns. Two of the characters turn out to be nicer than they were projected to be. It is a very fun read. This is the second book in a series. I missed the first one, but I wasn't lost. I received an advance reader copy and I am leaving a review voluntarily.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025Cheeky I believe is a great way to describe this story. A mystery at an English manor house, impoverished nobles hosting foreign royals at the behest of the government, theft, murder and an intrepid young lady with a knack for finding truth and trouble. What more could you want? Add in a dry sense of humor and that 1920’s sense of irreverence and you’ve got a great book in your hands!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2025After solving a mystery of a missing necklace and the death of her friend, Kitty Goring is ready to relax and party at the expense of the British Government. The Gorings have been asked to host Prince Vikram and Princess Noor of India.
Unfortunately, there's another necklace and another murder. While the bare bones of the mystery are the same, the story is delightfully different. Kitty wants nothing to do with this mystery, and DI Burton is happy to hear that until the princess demands that Kitty be involved because she doesn't trust the police.
Sapphires and Secrets is a great read. The mystery is entertaining. The cast of characters is fun. I love the family dynamic with Kitty, her brother and her eternally stressed out mother. Ms. Strike nails the 1920s vibe perfectly. It's just such a fun read! I can't recommend this book enough.
I received a free copy of this book and and happily giving this 5-star review.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2025Kitty Goring is fresh off her last investigation and looking forward to a state visit from Prince Vikram and Princess Noor of India. It should be a relaxing time with plenty of fun events including a fancy dinner. But when Princess Noor’s expensive heirloom sapphire necklace is stolen and a man is killed, Kitty is back on the case. Working with Detective Inspector Henry Burton, Kitty must determine who from her trusted circle of family and friends had access to the jewelry and motive for the murder.
Ella Strike is back with book two in the Kitting Goring Investigates series with Sapphires and Secrets. Set in 1920s England, this novel gives the cozy mystery feelings of an Agatha Christie work with a plot that will keep you guessing like Ocean’s 11. With a solid reminder not to judge on first impressions, this is a perfect match of historical fiction and mystery to keep readers entertained.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I give Sapphires and Secrets 4 out of 5 stars. This novel sports a shorter length, with short chapters and easy-to-read vocabulary and structure. I did struggle to connect with the characters for the first few chapters – this may be because I did not read the first book in the series though and may have missed valuable backstory for Kitty and her family. I really appreciated the historical fiction aspect on this book and the cultural aspect as well. I can’t wait to read more of Kitty’s adventures!
If you love Agatha Christie novels, you’re going to love this series! I would also recommend this book for readers who have enjoyed works by Rhys Bowen and Colette Clark. If you’re looking for a quick weekend read or fun cozy mystery, pick this up!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2025A cozy historical mystery with great characters, a dog and lots of twist and turns. I enjoyed every minute. Will definitely be looking forward to more by this author.
I received a copy and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2025This is a fun cosy mystery by a new-to-me author. I like Strike’s cheeky protagonist, Kitty, and her sidekick, Scottie (I grew up with a succession of Scottish terriers and can vouch for their intelligence and tenacity- two important traits for solving mysteries!). This story has plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader wondering. And the chemistry between Kitty and Detective Inspector Burton has just enough fireworks to make things fun. The pacing is a bit uneven in spots or I would’ve considered five stars. And I love an ending that’s not an ending… read this 1920’s tale to see what I mean! I received a complimentary advance copy of this book via Book Sirens and was not required to post a review.
