About the author

Simon Michael Prior experiences constant adventures, hazards and exciting situations as a marine rescue skipper and a commander of rescue operations.
Although Simon is absolutely nothing like Murph, Redcliff Marine Rescue’s burly, grumpy coxswain, many of the scenes in his stories are inspired by events he encounters during his duties.
Simon has also lived on two boats and sunk one of them; sold houses, street signs, Indian food and paper bags for a living; visited almost fifty countries and lived in three; qualified as a scuba diving instructor; nearly killed himself learning to wakeboard and built his own house without the benefit of an instruction manual.
He now lives in it by the sea with his wife and twin daughters, where he spends his time regurgitating his experiences on paper before he has so many more that he forgets them.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024With a heavy heart, Kateryna left her family behind in Ukraine as she fled to find a new life. Then Kateryna met Shiraz, a newcomer who made friends as she passionately pursued her dream of becoming a rescuer. This story will tug at your heartstrings when Shiraz learns a body has been found. The compassionate woman becomes deeply entangled in the search for the culprit, and her thrilling escapades will keep you captivated, eagerly reading late into the night, unable to put down this enthralling tale. I’m excited to discover the twists and turns that await in future books of the Shiraz Jones Marine Rescue Mysteries.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2024A sweet cozy mystery. I enjoyed this maritime-focused mystery with no graphic violence. One of the secondary protagonists reminded me of a comic sea captain and I was relieved the author explained this detail as I initially found it jarring. This was the second of the series I’ve read and I will continue following the story. As a note, each book can be read as a standalone, but reading in order provides a clearer background to the main character’s story.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2024I've been meaning to get into Cozy Mystery for some time after not getting much further past Agatha Christie! This is a great intro to the genre, and I found the marine premise intriguing.
It was fun shadowing the hero as she came down to earth rolling her sleeves up after her previous life. It looks like this series will keep rolling in! Get on board!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2025I was drawn to this book because of the emphasis on marine rescue, which sounded fascinating and something not covered in the myriad of careers covered by cozy mysteries. On that front, this did not disappoint! I learned so much about the various ins-and-outs of how rescue works and it was presented in a fun way, not a bunch of dry facts. The mystery was interesting as well, though I found that it was a little slow for me, and I didn’t really warm to any of the characters. The socialite aspect wasn’t really fleshed out in this one but I hope we will learn more about it in subsequent stories. I will continue with the series and hope that they grow on me.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2024Simon is a great memoirist and now shows us he's got skills in the murder mystery fiction genre, as well!
Ex-arm candy and society-page gal, Shiraz, moves to a small cove where she befriends the locals and begins living her life in a more genuine way training to be a marine rescue volunteer. A chance encounter and sudden death begin this tale of mystery with twists and turns. It's a fun beach read or quick read on those cold winter nights. It's the first in a series where we can follow likeable, quirky characters, Shiraz, her friend Emily, and Oscar the ex-detective encounter odd circumstances and unravel mysteries.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025This was a really fun story Shiraz is going to start training as a volunteer for the Marine rescue. She meets the local cafe owner also a new recruit when a local girl comes in crying. Shiraz tries to help her and the girl ends up murdered. I enjoyed this book and I recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2025wow, not the type book I normally read but this one I couldn’t put down until I finished it. I will have to read more in this serious, I have a new favorite author and a new type of book to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024Having finished all this author's travel memoirs, I was delighted to find he has moved on to cozy mysteries. And to show his cleverness, each title is a rhyming one. Shiraz, the hero of the series, leaves her glamorous but empty life to move to a seaside village and train as a marine rescuer. She quickly learns that it's not all about rescuing poor swimmers or broken-down boats. Her initiation to the village involves making new friends, then trying to solve the murder of one of them. After a whirlwind of leads and suspects, she proves to be a good detective, as well as competent mariner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
I really liked this. Good detail-but not too much. More 'normal'/down-to-earth-not like the glamorous, expensive lifestyle in the prequel. And that's why Shiraz ended up wanting to make a change.
It was intriguing, easy to read, and a very pleasant read. I had fun collecting the clues as I read, and had no idea who could have been responsible.
I read mostly non-fiction; memoirs. If I do read e.g. a crime fiction novel, I like it to be believable. I got these books knowing how much I'd enjoyed Simon Michael Prior's travel memoirs, but I didn't get stuck into them straightaway. I kept wondering if I would enjoy them as much. By the time I got around to starting the prequel, he'd already written 5 in the series! So then, it felt like a lot to catch up on. Anyway, I really do like them! Enjoyable, entertaining, and, as I learned from interviews the author had done, he is himself a volunteer marine rescue worker-so he's writing what he knows, and, instead of having this as a memoir, he's weaving it into a cozy mystery series. Adding extra interest to the main character. Ingenious.
Looking forward to reading more in the series.
